iOS 27

iOS 27 builds on the redesign and artificial intelligence features introduced in previous releases, bringing deeper integration of Apple Intelligence across the iPhone experience while refining the Liquid Glass interface that debuted a year earlier.

The software introduces faster on-device AI processing, smarter Siri interactions and expanded contextual features that can work across apps, messages and system services.

Apple also continues to emphasize privacy and security, with more AI tasks handled directly on supported devices rather than in the cloud, while the update delivers performance enhancements and new capabilities aimed at extending the usefulness of the company’s latest iPhone lineup.

The iOS 27 public beta is coming soon — if Apple’s previous release pattern holds up, it could hit your iPhone any day now. Developers have been having all the fun since early June, playing around with Siri AI and the new Liquid Glass slider while the rest of us waited. Now, that wait is almost over.

Once the public beta drops, which should be more stable than the initial developer betas, anyone can install iOS 27 for free. But your iPhone does need some prep first, and there are a few reasons you should think twice before hitting the Install button.

Regret installing iOS 27 beta? Here’s how to get back to iOS 26.

Beta remorse is real. Maybe an app won’t open, maybe things just feel off, or maybe you just want to go back to a stable daily driver while Apple sorts all the issues. Whatever the reason, you can downgrade from iOS 27 beta to iOS 26, and it’s not even that hard.

Here’s what to do.

The iPhone is about to get a lot more fluent. iOS 27 will bring support for nine new languages and accents to Apple Translate, pushing the app’s total support from 21 up to 30 — the biggest single expansion update Translate has ever received.

Soon, you’ll be ready for, “Dette er den største enkeltstående udvidelsesopdatering, som Apple Translate nogensinde har modtaget.”

Siri AI can now talk to your iPhone apps — starting with your car

In the latest iOS 27 developer beta, Siri AI can pull live information from third-party apps on your iPhone. It’s the kind of feature Siri should’ve had years ago — and now, it’s finally here.

Right now, it only appears to work with a couple of electric vehicle apps, letting you ask Siri things like your car’s battery level. But it’s a signal of where Siri AI is headed — an assistant that finally acts as a bridge across your entire phone, not just Apple’s walled garden.

Apple just added a Google Cloud warning for your iPhone’s AI features

Your iPhone is about to get a lot more transparent about where your data goes. Apple is rolling out a Google Cloud pop-up warning that protects your privacy by letting you know before certain Apple Intelligence features send your prompts off-device, and it’s already live for some users right now.

The heads-up appears when you use certain image- and shape-generation tools. It won’t block you from using these features, though. It simply makes sure you know your data is leaving Apple’s own servers before you hit send.

This Apple Intelligence feature won’t work unless you pay for 2TB iCloud+

Apple Intelligence-powered features in Apple’s Home app will require a 2TB iCloud+ plan, according to a footnote in macOS 27 developer beta 3. As part of the upgrade, the Home app uses AI to generate summaries of motion alerts from compatible HomeKit Secure Video cameras.

In the United States, the required 2TB iCloud+ plan costs $10 per month. Alternatively, it is a part of the Apple One Premier bundle, which costs $37.95 per month.

iOS 27 beta 3: All the new features and changes

Sticking to its two-week beta release schedule, Apple is rolling out iOS 27 beta 3 to developers. The new build contains relatively minor changes compared to the second beta.

Below are all the changes we have spotted in iOS 27 beta 3 so far.

Your iPhone will soon call your scammer’s bluff — here’s how

By

Scammers are tricky, but your iPhone will soon get a lot less gullible, thanks to a new iOS 27 feature called Trust Insights. It watches for the tell-tale signs you’re being coached through a scam — and steps in before you actually lose money.

The system runs quietly in the background regardless of what you are doing on your iPhone. If it thinks your behavior looks suspicious, your iPhone will flag it, slow you down, or make you verify twice before you go through with it.

While Trust Insights didn’t get a flashy keynote moment during WWDC26 in June, it will be one of the most useful things Apple ships this fall.

5 ways the Camera in iOS 27 is more refined than ever

The Camera app in iOS 27 is chock-full of small but meaningful improvements. The UI was given a major simplification last year; this year, that design is iterated and refined upon to make it the best yet.

This is one of the changes I’ve really grown to appreciate since installing the developer betas. Check it out below.

iOS 27 just broke your oldest iPhone habit

By

Apple just rewired a gesture you’ve used every day since 2011, and you probably won’t notice it until it’s too late. iOS 27 hands to the new Siri AI the exact swipe you’ve used to check notifications, and it doesn’t even ask nicely first.

Turn on Siri AI in the latest iOS 27 beta, and swiping down from the top center of your screen will no longer open the Notification Center but wake up Siri instead. Your alerts aren’t going anywhere, but you’ll need to relearn where to find them.

4 features that supercharge Notes in iOS 27 and macOS Golden Gate

iOS 27 and macOS Golden Gate add a handful of Notes features that will supercharge your note-taking. There are new options for formatting, working with Markdown and even drawing on a Mac for the first time.

It’s not a big year for the popular note-taking app, but the changes Apple added will please plenty of power users. Here’s what’s new.

Tons of new features in Photos help sort your massive library in iOS 27

The new Photos app in iOS 27 clearly did not get the memo that this was a small year of bug fixes and performance improvements. While it is faster and more stable, there are tons of excellent new features top to bottom. Sorting through the largest photo libraries will be easier than ever in iOS 27.

Here are all the new features you can look forward to — or, if you’re daring, try out now.

How you might be able to skip the waitlist and get the new Siri AI early

By

Get The New Siri AI
It’s about damn time.
Image: Apple/D. Griffin Jones/Cult of Mac

You can get the new Siri AI right now on your iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Vision Pro. All you have to do is update to the iOS 27 developer beta release.

You’ll get access to the smarter, conversational and agentic Siri. It really does seem to be everything Apple promised.

You’ll also get the other Apple Intelligence features: generating Shortcuts and Safari extensions, extensive photo editing tools, realistic generation in Image Playground, systemwide proofreading and much more.

Be warned — to get the hottest feature, Siri AI, there’s another waitlist. You should hop on as early as you can. You might even be able to skip the long wait time — there’s an unconfirmed method people are trying out. Here’s how.

How to file Apple bug reports (and why you should do it ASAP)

By

Apple Bug Report graphic
There are unspoken rules and tricks to getting your bug reports fixed.
Image: D. Griffin Jones/Cult of Mac

June is the best time of year to give feedback to Apple on betas for iPhone, Mac, iPad and Apple Watch. Just after the company releases the initial betas of its upcoming software updates, this is when Apple engineers have the most time to address bugs and make changes. And that makes this the optimal time to file an Apple bug report.

It won’t be long before Apple engineers’ task lists fill up through the fall, when the new software will be released. After that, teams are rearranged to make the sprint toward the next year’s updates. So if you have any input, you’d best make yourself heard now.

How do you file a bug report or send in feedback to Apple? Apple made a tool called Feedback Assistant that will guide you through the process. It’s available if you’re running a developer or a public beta of iOS, macOS, iPadOS and visionOS. Here’s how.

iOS 27 adds two painfully missing features to RCS messaging

Your iPhone just stopped being the awkward one in the group chat. Buried deep inside iOS 27 beta 2 are two small RCS fixes that solve some of the biggest quirks that made “green-bubble” chats between iPhone and Android users feel half-baked for years.

If you have ever tapped a heart on a photo your Android friend sent, your iPhone has likely announced to the entire thread that you “loved an image” instead of simply showing a heart. But with iOS 27 beta 2, your reactions show up as they should.

Hack to skip the Siri AI waitlist no longer works — but there may be another way

By

The hack that some Mac users were using to try out the new Siri AI, skipping the waitlist, no longer works.

Apple released the second developer beta of all its OS 27 updates yesterday. In macOS 27 developer beta 2, the hidden Terminal command no longer enables Siri AI. After you update, you’ll find yourself back on Apple’s waitlist. If you previously enabled it on your Mac, your access will be revoked.

But no worries — some users on Reddit may have found a way to get yourself accepted fast.

8 new features in Safari in iOS 27 that make browsing better

There are eight great new Safari features in iOS 27. The update fixes a lot of irritating design problems that have bothered me for years.

Plus, if your phone supports Apple Intelligence, you’ll enjoy some smart new features that make your browsing easier — I’ve already created a couple custom extensions. And everyone will appreciate the speed and performance gains when they update.

Check out what you can expect from Safari this fall when Apple releases iOS 27.

10 days in iOS 27 beta heaven/hell [Cult of Mac podcast No. 25]

By

So far, Siri AI seems like a winner.
Image: Cult of Mac

This week on the Cult of Mac podcast: After more than a week spent hands-on with the first iOS 27 developer beta, Griffin and Leander give us a status update on what works and what really, really doesn’t.

The good news is, Siri AI seems legitimately useful. The bad news is that the betas are a little rough around the edges. (After all, betas gonna beta.) Still, there’s plenty to talk about as we go over the best new features.

Also on the Cult of Mac podcast:

  • Some leaked iOS 27 features that never happened might still be on the way. It’s all part of Apple’s secret plan to sell us new hardware this fall.
  • Speaking of new hardware, it sounds like 2027 is going to be an absolute doozy for Apple.
  • And finally, the inside story of the latest Cult of Mac hack.

Resizable iPhone apps show what the folding iPhone will be like [Gallery]

iPhone Mirroring in macOS Golden Gate gives us a clue about what the first folding iPhone will be like. For the first time, you can resize the window to any arbitrary size. That means you can stretch the screen to the rumored dimensions of Apple’s upcoming foldable and see how your favorite apps will look and work.

After all, it’s going to be an unusual iPhone. The unfolded inner screen will be roughly iPad mini-size, with an outer screen that’s much shorter and wider than any iPhone made in the last 15 years.

I took some screenshots of various Apple apps to demonstrate what the folding iPhone’s user interface will look like.

Apple will fix CarPlay’s most annoying shortcomings in iOS 27

With iOS 27, Apple is giving CarPlay one of the biggest quality-of-life upgrades in years. The showcase feature is the ability to browse and watch videos, right on your car’s display, without touching your iPhone. But that’s just the start.

I tested the new Siri AI against Apple’s claims. Here’s how it went.

These are the kinds of things you’ll be able to ask the new, smarter Siri.
Image: Apple

Did Apple finally get it right — is the new Siri AI useful? In my early Siri AI testing, I think the answer to that question is a resounding “yes.” I took the three biggest demos from Apple’s keynote and replicated them with my own questions based on my own personal context. In nearly all the tests, it performed just as well as Apple’s examples.

I’ve been throwing Siri AI, now available in the first developer beta of iOS 27, all kinds of other questions, too. Foolishly, I put the beta on my main iPhone, so I’ve been using it as my one and only voice assistant for a week now.

While its smarts aren’t going to shock you if you’ve used a chatbot before, its private, secure access to your entire digital life is something nothing else can offer. (And, some would say, an anticompetitive advantage.)

Siri AI is the real deal.

iOS 27 isn’t done yet: Additional features might arrive in September

Three rumored features that Apple didn’t mention at WWDC26 last week — a customizable Camera app, Siri support for third-party AI chatbots, and a Modular watch face that works on regular Apple Watches — might arrive this fall.

These features all bubbled up in the rumor mill before Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference, but it looks like we won’t see them until September.

Shocker! Image Playground in iOS 27 is actually useful.

Forget what you know about Apple’s Image Playground — the app is no longer terrible. There’s a new version on the way, and it finally fulfills the promise Apple made two years ago.

Later this year, your iPhone is getting an AI tool that’s truly capable of generating images based on your descriptions. And the software can avoid many of the usual problems that cause some people to reject artificial intelligence tools.

Apple WWDC26: Apple Mail’s search has been broken for years, and everyone knows it. But iOS 27 should fix that.

When it arrives later this year, it will bring a completely rebuilt Mail search with features such as a new on-device index, relevance ranking and the ability to reindex old emails. The emails you know exist but can never find? Your iPhone will finally be able to surface them.
