Why the EU won’t get iOS 27’s biggest new feature

Apple WWDC26:
The headlining new feature of iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 — new Siri AI — will not come to the EU.

“We’re deeply disappointed that our EU users won’t have Siri AI on iPhone or iPad when we share our new software releases later this year,” said Apple’s SVP of Software Engineering Craig Federighi.

Blame the EU’s DMA for the lack of Siri AI in iOS 27

Apple spent the most time during the opening keynote of WWDC 2026 talking about Siri AI and new Apple Intelligence features.

Powered by Apple’s upgraded foundation model, Siri AI is deeply integrated across iOS 27 and iPadOS 27. It can understand context in apps, surfacing relevant information and actions as needed.

For example, in the Photos app, you can use Siri’s natural language processing to find photos from years ago, find relevant details buried in long email threads and more.

Unfortunately, EU iPhone and iPad users will not gain access to Siri AI when iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 launch later this year. This includes access to the new Siri app, upgraded Visual Intelligence, integrated Writing Tools, etc.

Apple puts the blame entirely on the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) for this.

“Over the past several months, EU regulators did not accept any of Apple’s proposed solutions to bring Siri AI to the EU while safely supporting other virtual assistants,” says Apple in its press release.

EU did not approve Apple’s proposed solutions

Apple continues to discuss the issue with the EU. However, it can’t provide a timeline on Siri’s availability in the region.

Apple says the EU’s Digital Markets Act would require it to give third-party AI assistants direct access to the user data and system features. This would create serious privacy and security risks.

To alleviate these privacy and security concerns, Apple designed the Trusted System Agent. It would allow other virtual assistants access to the same features as Siri. However, the European Commission rejected all of Apple’s proposed solutions.

Siri AI will be available on macOS 27, watchOS 27 and visionOS 27 in the EU.

This isn’t the first time Apple has withheld major iOS features in the EU. The company also delayed the rollout of Apple Intelligence and iPhone Mirroring in Europe over similar regulatory concerns.
