Everything we know so far about September’s new phones.
The iPhone 17 is the lineup of iPhones that will be announced in September 2025. The iPhone 16 is the lineup that is currently for sale.
The exact design details are a closely guarded secret: Apple never releases any information about upcoming products until they are unveiled at special product launch events. The iPhone has been announced in September for the last 14 years — barring 2020 when COVID delayed it one month. Monday, September 8 is likely when it will be this year.
Leaks and rumors suggest Apple is going to make some changes to the standard iPhone lineup. As anticipation builds, here’s a detailed overview of what we can expect from this new series.
iPhone 17 models
The lineup is rumored to consist of five models:
iPhone 17
iPhone 17 Pro
iPhone 17 Pro Max
iPhone 17 Air (or Slim)
iPhone 17e
Notably, Apple is discontinuing the “Plus” model in favor of the new Air variant, which aims to offer a thinner design without compromising on performance or features.
The 17e will likely get a later release of spring 2026, just like the delayed release of the iPhone 16e.
iPhone 17 colors
17: While specific colors for the standard models have not been confirmed, Apple typically offers a range of classic hues. Based on previous releases, we can expect traditional colors like Black, White, Pink and Blue, and possibly one more fun color.
Pro and Pro Max:
Leaker Majin Bu has indicated that Apple is considering introducing brighter and more saturated colors for the Pro models, including:
Teal Titanium
Green Titanium
Dark Green Titanium
These colors would represent a significant shift from Apple’s typical muted tones used in previous Pro models, which have included shades like Black Titanium and Desert Titanium.
Air:
The new Air model is also expected to feature unique color options, potentially including some of the vibrant shades mentioned above. This model may appeal to users looking for a lighter and more colorful aesthetic.
Apple’s color strategy
Historically, Apple has reserved more vivid colors for its non-Pro models, such as the bright pinks and aquamarine options seen in the iPhone 16 series. The introduction of brighter colors in the Pro lineup would mark a notable change in Apple’s design philosophy, suggesting a willingness to cater to a broader audience seeking personalization in their devices
While these color options are still speculative and subject to change as we approach the official launch, the potential inclusion of vibrant hues like Teal and Dark Green could make the pro phones stand out in a crowded market. As always with Apple, official confirmation will come closer to the release date.
iPhone 17 design
The four main models will almost certainly look very much like this.
The iPhone 17 series is expected to showcase a tweaked design. The biggest change will come to the camera module on the back, where on the Pro and Air models, it will stretch all the way across the rear of the phone. Based on leaked images, it appears the design of the camera plateau will also be a little tweaked, with a bubbly, glossy look.
The iPhone 17 Air featuring a significantly thinner profile compared to its peers. Whereas the regular and pro models will be the same thickness (or slightly thicker), the Air will be much slimmer and lighter. This model could be the top choice for those who want a more comfortable phone to hold in the hand.
The entry-level model may see an increase in display size from 6.1 inches to approximately 6.3 inches, while the Air model could measure around 6.6 inches. The Pro models will stick with their 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays.
iPhone 17 features
One of the most exciting updates is the potential introduction of ProMotion technology across all models, allowing for a smoother scrolling experience with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. This feature, previously exclusive to Pro models, will enhance user experience significantly by enabling always-on functionality and better video playback
iPhone 17 camera
Apple is expected to enhance its camera technology significantly:
Front Camera: A new 24MP front-facing camera will replace the current 12MP sensor, improving selfie quality and low-light performance.
Rear Cameras: The Pro Max model may feature a triple-camera setup with three 48MP sensors, enhancing mobile photography capabilities, particularly in low-light conditions.
iPhone 17 specs
The entire iPhone 17 lineup is rumored to be powered by Apple’s next-generation A19 chip, built on a refined 3-nanometer process, promising improved performance and energy efficiency. The Pro models are expected to come with 12GB of RAM, while the standard and Air versions will have 8GB, catering to both casual users and power users alike.
iPhone 17 Wi-Fi
With advancements in connectivity, the iPhone 17 series is set to support Wi-Fi 7, which will provide faster wireless connections and improved data transmission speeds. This enhancement will be particularly beneficial for users engaged in streaming and gaming activities.
iPhone 17 durability
Apple is reportedly collaborating with Corning to introduce a new anti-reflective coating that is tougher and more scratch-resistant than the existing Ceramic Shield. This upgrade aims to enhance screen durability, addressing concerns about wear and tear over time.
iPhone 17 price
While pricing details remain speculative, it’s likely that Apple will maintain similar price points as the iPhone 16 series. The anticipated starting prices could be around:
iPhone 17: $799
iPhone 17 Pro: $999
iPhone 17 Pro Max: $1,199
iPhone 17 Air: Pricing yet to be determined but expected above the standard models. Early rumors suggested the iPhone 17 Air would be the most expensive in the linuep, but subsequent rumors suggest the iPhone 17 Air’s price will be somewhere in the middle.
iPhone 17 release date
Pre-orders are expected to commence shortly after a September 2025 announcement, with shipping likely starting a week later.
Conclusion
The iPhone 17 lineup promises substantial upgrades across design, performance, camera technology, and connectivity features. As Apple continues its tradition of innovation, the anticipation surrounding these devices highlights their potential impact on the smartphone market in 2025. With significant enhancements expected across all models, Apple fans have much to look forward to later this year.

Low demand for the super-slim iPhone Air in markets outside China led Apple to drastically cut its production orders, according to a new report. But the company is increasing assembly for other iPhone 17 models due to high demand.
The report comes after the iPhone Air sold out within minutes of preorders opening in China last week. After the initial buzz faded, demand appears to have dropped off

Apple shipped 58.6 million iPhones and captured 18.2% of the global smartphone market, the company’s “best results ever in a July quarter,” according to new data from the International Data Corporation. The iPhone nearly matched Samsung’s 19% market share.
Demand for innovation, like new artificial intelligence features, plus aggressive trade-in programs, helped fuel the surge, despite tariff woes, IDC said.

Apple officially addressed the iPhone 17‘s Scratchgate issue. It says the problem isn’t due to the new glass-and-aluminum design, blaming worn-out MagSafe risers and chargers in retail displays instead.
iPhone 17’s Scratchgate controversy surfaced just days after it went on sale, sparking widespread concern among early buyers.

A new screen protector company offers iPhone users something they’ve never had before — the ability to showcase personalized artwork directly on their device’s Screen Skinz screen protector while maintaining full functionality during use. Thanks to tech magic, the artwork only shows when the handset’s screen is locked.
“Screen Skinz lets users proudly highlight their favorite team or character with the confidence that a premium tempered glass screen protector has them covered,” said RaShaun Brown, co-founder of Screen Skinz. “With Screen Skinz, your phone has protection when you need it and personality when you want it.”

Which 2025 iPhone is the right pick for you? Photo: Apple/CultOfMac
Apple’s 2025 iPhone lineup is its boldest — and most confusing — yet. It offers three distinct models designed to cater to very different kinds of users. From the slim and stylish iPhone Air to the all-out powerhouse iPhone 17 Pro, with the well-balanced iPhone 17 in between, there’s something here for everyone.
But with overlapping features, similar pricing and Apple blurring the lines between Pro and non-Pro models, choosing the right iPhone isn’t as straightforward as it used to be.

SAN FRANCISCO — The iPhone 17 Scratchgate drama is real. Demo units of the new iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air models in Apple retail stores are showing scratches on opening weekend. The scratches appeared on their aluminum frames and on the glass panels on their backs.
I examined demo iPhones at Apple Stonestown in San Francisco on Friday (the busy iPhone 17 launch day) and again on Sunday. Many of the new iPhone 17 Pros and iPhone Airs are already scratched, especially the iPhone 17 Pro in deep blue and the iPhone Air in space black. But other colors showed scratches, too, even the iPhone 17 Pro in cosmic orange — the hot color this year.

Apple put an always-on screen in the iPhone 17 and improved the display’s refresh rate to 120 Hz. Plus, the selfie cam got a brilliant new feature. There are plenty of other enhancements too — including double the storage capacity! — which all combine to make Apple’s new base-model iPhone a welcome upgrade for those ready to move up from an aging device.
This is the first time I’ve regularly used a basic iOS model in almost a decade. I’m impressed with what Apple offers for $799. It’s really made me question the need for a Pro model. Here’s why.

An iPhone 17 Pro Max teardown confirms Apple sticking with Qualcomm’s modem for its flagship iPhones this year. The company did not specifically confirm using Qualcomm’s baseband on the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro models while unveiling them.
This is unlike the iPhone Air, which uses Apple’s second-gen C1X modem.

With the iPhone 17 models out, you can have your pick of tough and stylish cases. Photo: Cult of Mac/Totallee
There’s no need to wait: Shop the best iPhone 17 cases available now so you can slide your new device directly into one when it arrives. As you may know, new iPhones are pretty tough. And sure, lots of people go caseless to show off their handset’s sleek lines and cool color.
But imagine you drop it and break it, or crack the edge of the glass without even knowing how it happened — like I did recently with my iPhone 16 Pro (and just weeks ahead of likely trade-in!).
Yes, breakage can be crushing. But fortunately, even though the iPhone lineup 17 just came out, you can already choose from plenty of protective new cases — and avoid my sad fate.
Case makers plan for the new iPhone every year, with plenty of timely new releases. You could go minimal with a thin case that works well with iPhone Air’s sleek design. You might seek extreme impact resistance for the most damaging drops for your iPhone 17, or maybe you’d pick a luxurious leather that only looks better with age. For those looking for durable yet stylish protection for an iPhone 17 Pro or Pro Max, you can find a variety of well-crafted options.
We gathered the best iPhone 17 cases you can buy right now — in addition to cases by Apple and its subsidiary Beats — with prices starting as low as $19.
Update: An hour after the pre-orders started, demand for the iPhone 17 Pro Max is already starting to exceed supply. An order placed now in the U.S. for most configurations of this top-of-line model won’t ship until late September, and others won’t arrive before October.
Apple is already taking preorders for the AirPods Pro 3, Apple Watch Series 11 and Apple Watch Ultra 3. All three will be available at retail starting September 19.
The rumors were correct about iPhone 17 series RAM. Image: ChatGPT/Cult of Mac
The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max include 12GB of RAM, which is 50% more than their predecessors. The change should improve the performance of the handsets, especially when handling AI-related functions.
However, the base model iPhone 17 did not get a RAM upgrade. And the amount in the iPhone Air remains unknown.
