Speaking of sci-fi, the Apple TV+ adaptation of Foundation also found a large audience last week.

Mary Steenburgen and Jake Johnson star in The Dink, a comedy that revolves around the sometimes-reviled sport of pickleball. Photo: Apple TV+
Apple Original Films said Monday it acquired The Dink, a new comedy movie starring Jake Johnson as a faded tennis player who embraces the sport that shall not be named: pickleball.
Josh Greenbaum (Will & Harper and Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) will direct a promising cast led by Johnson (New Girl and Minx), along with Mary Steenburgen, Ed Harris and Chloe Fineman.
Comedy legend (and Severance executive producer) Ben Stiller will make an on-screen appearance. As will actual tennis stars Andy Roddick and John McEnroe.

Viewers keep rallying behind the action-packed historical drama series Chief of War starring Jason Momoa. High ratings put it among the most popular series on streaming for a second week, according to two different ratings trackers.

Catch the new “Snoopy Presents: A Summer Musical" starting Friday, August 15, 2025 on Apple TV+. Photo: Apple TV+
Streaming Friday (or really Thursday night, per typical Apple TV+ practice), Snoopy Presents: A Summer Musical — the first Peanuts musical in more than three decades — sees Charlie Brown and the gang trying to save their beloved summer camp from going bust. And the music part is no joke here, featuring songs from singer-songwriter Ben Folds and other award-winning composers. Watch the recent trailer below.
Reviews so far seem quite positive. The New York Times talked about the show’s “new direction,” depicting Charlie Brown’s triumph while celebrating Charles M. Schulz’s legacy 25 years after his death and 75 years after the birth of his iconic comic strip. Nerds that Geek calls the musical numbers “a real treat.” The San Francisco Chronicle said it “charms with heart and songs” and “hits the right notes.”
In each case so far, only the first season of each show is available. Photo: United Airlines
United Airlines passengers can now watch popular Apple TV+ originals including Severance, Ted Lasso and Slow Horses for free during flights, the airline said Tuesday. The partnership brings full seasons of award-winning Apple TV+ content to United’s 130,000-plus seatback screens and mobile app.
Jason Momoa co-created, wrote, executive produces and stars in Chief of War. Photo: Apple TV+
While historical dramas often recycle familiar European or American narratives, Apple TV+’s Chief of War breaks cool new ground by exploring less-charted territory. The ambitious production transports viewers to 19th-century Hawaii, offering an authentic indigenous perspective on a pivotal period rarely depicted in mainstream media.
It’s bloody and brilliant. And you end up seeing Jason Momoa’s nearly bare backside so often that you just become numb to it.
Kidding aside, it only takes the first three episodes now available to stream as of Friday to see that Chief of War isn’t just another historical drama. It’s more of a cultural phenomenon that challenges conventional storytelling while delivering the great-looking cinematic work Apple TV+ subscribers have come to expect. The series masterfully weaves together political intrigue, cultural authenticity and human drama in ways that should captivate history buffs, cultural diversity seekers, bloodthirsty battle lovers and pretty much anyone hungry for some fresh storytelling.
F1 earns a checkered flag: It’s Apple’s biggest film success ever. Image: Apple Original Films
You didn’t miss your opportunity to see Apple’s blockbuster racing flick F1: The Movie in Imax. The movie starring Brad Pitt returns to the giant theater screens Friday, and should arrive on even more of them next week.
The film blends blazing-fast cars on the racetrack with clashing personalities off the track. Pitt plays an aging racer trying to prove he still has what it takes to be a Formula One driver, with the action playing out at 230 mph.
Apple TV+ comedy Platonic comes back for season two starting August 6. Photo: Apple TV+
Here’s your chance to see anew how platonic relationships between men and women can quickly turn into minefields. Season two of Apple TV+ comedy Platonic, starring Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne, started streaming Wednesday with its first two episodes.
The two stars head up other successful shows on the streaming service — The Studio for Rogen and Physical for Byrne. The new season of Platonic — you can watch the trailer below — brings them together again and looks familiar after season one. We get laughs from embarrassing moments and physical comedy, but also have our heartstrings plucked a bit as the two lovable losers struggle with life.
It’s a cliche, but if you like Ted Lasso you should try Stick. Graphic: Apple TV+
Stick continues to stick near the tops of the streaming TV popularity charts as the sports comedy wraps up its first season. The Apple TV+ series starring Owen Wilson kept its audience since the premiere in June.
It maintains AppleTV’s long streak of at least one series or film among the top 10 most popular.
Jason Momoa co-created, wrote, executive produces and stars in Chief of War. Photo: Apple TV+
In the historical drama series Chief of War — streaming Friday on Apple TV+ — Jason Momoa plays warrior Ka‘iana. He’s desperate to united warring Hawaiian islands against encroaching Western colonization, according to the recent full-length trailer Apple TV+ dropped. At just over 3 minutes in length and loaded with battle scenes as well as scenes of native life, the trailer’s unusually in-depth. But now you can finally watch the first two episodes of the series.
The nine-episode drama follows all the action from an indigenous perspective. It comes from native Hawaiians Thomas Pa’a Sibbett and Momoa, who serve as executive producers. Momoa also wrote it and stars in it.
Update: Momoa’s Chief of War started streaming on Apple TV+ Friday, August 1. It’s off to fast start on Rottentomatoes.com with an 86% Fresh rating (though that’s based on just a handful of reviews so far). USA Today calls the show “triumphant” and The Guardian notes that Momoa’s character wrestles sharks and leads tons of battle scenes, but adds that a lot of backstory makes the show “dense stuff.”

"Stick" is the nickname pro golfers give the greats -- sometimes before they flame out, like Owen Wilson's character. Photo: Apple TV+
Popular Apple TV+ sports comedy Stick just completed its first season and got its green light for season two. So while comparisons to feel-good soccer phenom Ted Lasso seem inevitable, this Owen Wilson-led golf series carves out its own distinctive identity.
Rather than trying to replicate the wholesome optimism and wildly unbelievable story that made Ted Lasso a cultural phenomenon, Stick takes viewers slightly further into somewhat darker territory and into a slightly more believable story with suburban grift, sardonic humor and complex characters navigating grief and redemption.
Hey, I said somewhat darker, slightly further and slightly more believable, OK?
In a nutshell, Stick, like Lasso, is danged wholesome and all about redemption. And both series are feel-good shows people want to watch right now, given the societal circumstances. But for my Apple TV+ Stick review, here are three compelling reasons why Stick deserves your attention, regardless of how you feel about its more famous predecessor.
Apple TV+ subscribers can now laugh along with Acapulco season 4. Graphic: Apple TV+
Acapulco returned to Apple TV+ on Wednesday for its fourth and final season. While bilingual shows often struggle on American TV, this comedy earned high praise from critics.
With Apple more willing to cancel underperforming series, keeping Acapulco going for this long means it must have found an audience. It certainly earns top ratings from viewers.
Be the cool kid on the block with Atomic Keyboards' MDR Dasher Keyboard from Severance. Photo: Atomic Keyboards
Severance, the dystopian workplace thriller that captivates Apple TV+ subscribers, makes the leap from screen to desk with a meticulously crafted replica of the show’s distinctive keyboard. Atomic Keyboards announced recently that its MDR Dasher Keyboard — inspired by the mysterious input device used by Mark S., Helly R., Dylan G., and Irving B. in Lumon Industries’ sterile offices — now heads to Kickstarter with reservations open for just $10.
Just remember, the retro keeb is three keyboards in one, but it features no Escape, Option or Control keys. And it’s steep pricing might make you lose hope altogether.

So the adventures of dysfunctional British MI5 intelligence team continue. Taron Egerton and Jurnee Smollett star in “Smoke,” debuting June 27 on Apple TV+. Photo: Apple TV+
Apple TV+ heats up this summer with the true-crime drama Smoke season 1 igniting small screens everywhere Friday, with investigators on the trail of two serial arsonists. The streamer recently revealed a first look and a trailer, below, for the nine-episode series, starring and executive produced by Taron Egerton. And now you can watch the show on Apple TV+.
Inspired by the popular podcast Firebug, Smoke reunites the creative team behind Apple’s critically acclaimed limited psycho-drama Black Bird. It should appeal to fans of crime dramas, psychological thrillers and the previous Dennis Lehane-Egerton collaboration on Black Bird. Smoke looks like a must-watch addition to the Apple TV+ lineup.
Update 2:Smoke streams as of Friday, June 27, on Apple TV+. Reviews so far are mixed but leaning positive. The Boston Globe said the show “stretches too much story over too many episodes.” But The Guardian said “no TV show has ever been worth sticking with more,” adding the “smart, mesmerizing and hugely entertaining” series more than pays off after the first two somewhat shaky episodes.
Update 1: Apple TV+ just released a new trailer for upcoming drama series Smoke. Clocking in at just over 2 minutes, the tense trailer pits two would-be allies — the Fire Dept. arson investigator played by Egerton and the Police crime scene expert played by Jurnee Smollett — against each other in a psychological game with a timer on it. When will the arsonists, whoever they are, kill again? And at least one of them might be Egerton’s character.
