How would you like to be the lone U.S. marshal covering a vast Alaska region when a jet loaded with dangerous convicts crashes, setting dozens of killers free? That’s the premise for Apple TV+’s new The Last Frontier series. And before long it becomes clear it may not have been an accident at all, but just the first step in a terrifying plan.
The good news is you don’t have to be the marshal. You can just watch his struggle in the tense, 10-episode series starting Friday.
Reviews so far are mixed. Collider said: “The Last Frontier is an engaging, often surprising manhunt thriller that elevates itself through a great central performance from Jason Clarke and smart, unexpected plotting that constantly evolves as the story unfolds.” But The Hollywood Reporter noted the show “goes from fun to tedious in a hurry.” AV Club called it “far more silly than chilly,” teeming with “exposition dumps” and “inane twists.”
Action-packed The Last Frontier premieres on Apple TV+
The Last Frontier follows Frank Remnick (Jason Clarke), “the lone U.S. marshal in charge of the quiet, rugged barrens of Alaska,” as Apple TV+ said. And it’s all thrown into havoc when a prison transport plane crashes in the wilderness, setting free dozens of violent inmates. But as Remnick sets about mounting a hunt and protecting the nearby town, “he begins to suspect the crash wasn’t an accident, but the first step of a well-crafted plan with far-reaching and devastating implications.”
The series promises no shortage of action as a high-stakes thriller. One inmate in particular presents a special threat, complete with CIA involvement. Read more about it below and watch the official and teaser trailers below.
Or dive right in with the first two episodes, which began streaming on Apple TV+ on Friday. The third episode appears on Friday, October 17.

Thriller series The Last Frontier season 1 premieres October 10 on Apple TV+
July 24, 2025: Apple TV+ subscribers got their first look at upcoming thriller The Last Frontier season 1, as the platform unveiled a sneak peek at what promises to be one of fall’s most intense new series. The 10-episode drama, starring the veteran Australian actor Jason Clarke, premieres Friday, October 10.

With the new teaser trailer, Apple TV+ offers a glimpse into the show’s harsh, unforgiving landscape of Alaska. It’s there that U.S. Marshal Frank Remnick (Clarke) finds himself facing an unprecedented crisis. When a prison transport plane crash lands in the remote wilderness, it releases dozens of violent inmates into his jurisdiction. So Remnick must protect his small town while uncovering what appears to be a carefully orchestrated conspiracy.
The short trailer focuses just on the moments before crash, as experienced inside the plane by the convicts. One guy’s furtive actions suggest the apparent detonation near the back of the aircraft is no accident. And the lingering shots of the passengers just prior to the mayhem set up what may follow on the ground. Like that guy in full Hannibal-Lector mode in the back of the plane. What will he get up to in scenic Alaska?
Clarke, known for his powerful performances in Zero Dark Thirty and Mudbound, takes on both starring and executive producing duties for the series. His portrayal of the isolated marshal promises to showcase the actor’s range as he navigates both physical danger and psychological warfare in the Alaskan wilderness, Apple TV+ said.
Star-studded ensemble brings depth to remote setting

The series boasts an impressive ensemble cast that Apple TV+ users will recognize from some of their favorite shows and films. Dominic Cooper (The Gold) joins Clarke alongside Haley Bennett (The Magnificent Seven), Simone Kessell (Yellowjackets), Dallas Goldtooth (Reservation Dogs), and Tait Blum (For All Mankind). Academy Award nominee and multi-Emmy winner Alfre Woodard (Clemency) rounds out the cast, bringing her considerable dramatic weight to the production.
This casting represents Apple TV+’s continued commitment to attracting top-tier talent for its original programming, following the success of shows like Severance, Ted Lasso and The Morning Show.

Proven creators behind the camera
The Last Frontier comes from the creative minds of Jon Bokenkamp and Richard D’Ovidio, a partnership that brings significant thriller experience to Apple TV+. Bokenkamp previously created the long-running NBC hit The Blacklist, while D’Ovidio wrote the Halle Berry thriller The Call. Their collaboration on this project promises the kind of serialized storytelling and complex plotting that has made Apple TV+ a destination for premium television.
The series is executive produced by the creator duo alongside Clarke, Laura Benson (The Big C), Glenn Kessler (Bloodline), Albert Kim (Nikita) and Sam Hargrave, who also serves as episodic director. Hargrave’s action expertise, demonstrated in Netflix’s Extraction, should prove invaluable for the series’ more intense sequences.
