Streaming Friday, the new Apple TV+ documentary series Knife Edge: Chasing Michelin Stars gives an unprecedented look behind the scenes of the world’s most prestigious restaurants in their quest for coveted Michelin stars.

Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay and his Studio Ramsay Global production company produce the eight-part series. It promises to deliver high-stakes culinary drama and unprecedented access to the secretive Michelin ratings process. Watch the trailer below.

Reviews so far lean positive, calling the show “riveting” and praising its realistic, fly-on-the-wall look at chef’s lives and what drives them.

Knife Edge: Chasing Michelin Stars documentary series

Hosted by Jesse Burgess, a food expert and co-founder of the global food and travel platform Topjaw, the series takes viewers inside the emotionally charged world of fine dining restaurants as they pursue the culinary world’s most coveted recognition: Michelin stars. The show captures the intense pressure, ambition and perfectionism that drives chefs as they work toward earning their first, second or even third star, Apple TV+ said.

Global culinary journey across premier dining destinations

Knife Edge: Chasing Michelin Stars spans multiple continents and culinary cultures, visiting restaurants across eight compelling food destinations. The series features establishments in New York (Coqodaq, The Musket Room, Nōksu), Chicago (Cariño, Esmé, Feld), the Nordic countries (Aure, Jordnær, Knystaforsen), the United Kingdom (Caractère, House, Wilsons), Mexico (Em, Máximo), Italy (Agriturismo Ferdy, Kresios) and California (Harbor House, Pasjoli, Pasta|Bar).

At each location, chefs open their doors and kitchens to cameras. They provide viewers with intimate access to the creative process, daily operations and personal sacrifices that define life in pursuit of Michelin recognition. The documentary format allows audiences to witness firsthand the meticulous attention to detail and relentless standards that characterize Michelin-starred joints.

Unprecedented access to Michelin inspectors

But what really sets this Apple TV+ series apart is its rare access to the traditionally secretive world of Michelin itself. The production secured on-the-record interviews with anonymous Michelin inspectors. That offers viewers insight into the evaluation process that determines which restaurants receive the prestigious stars. This level of access provides a chef’s-eye view of one of the culinary industry’s most mysterious and influential organizations.

“Working for the Michelin guide is a bit like working for the CIA,” said one inspector.

The series is produced for Apple TV+ by Studio Ramsay Global, a Fox Entertainment Company, with Gordon Ramsay, Lisa Edwards and Morgan Roberts serving as executive producers.
