Apple’s secret strategy: Underpromise and overdeliver

Why the critics are wrong who think Apple's lost its touch.

Apple’s always been the company that promised us the world. Steve Jobs’ genius was his ability to convince us that every single thing Apple did shifted the Earth on its axis.

Recently, that feeling of magical futurism has faded. Apple events have been preceded by a feeling of “been there, done that.”

Forget the “wireless future” that Apple talked up at yesterday’s iPhone 7 event as it tried to convince us that we really want AirPods and a dongle rather than a headphone jack. If Apple has a strategy in 2016, it’s underpromise and overdeliver.

And it’s working great!

The new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are the first iPhones to receive IP67 dust and waterproofing certification. However, before you start planning all the new underwater activities you plan to do with your new handset, it’s important to know that those claims are advisory only.

In fact, as the small print for iPhone 7 makes perfectly clear, liquid damage is not covered under warranty.

Owner Nathan Dornacher said that he and his wife went to a yard sale over Labor Day weekend. While unloading a desk they’d bought for their daughter, Nathan left his new Note 7 to charge in his vehicle.

Tech journalists who got their hands on an iPhone 7 Wednesday sometimes felt uneasy with what they were touching.

The most off-putting feature seemed to be the Home button. The once satisfying click of the button has a new sensation thanks to a Taptic Engine. The response to its touch ranged from “awful” to “weird” to the more delicate “it will take some getting used to.”

Based on Apple’s usual ways of doing things, the iPhone 7 won’t be in the hands of customers until Friday, September 16, but that doesn’t mean they’re not yet in transit.

In fact, a new report claims that as of Monday this week a total of 371,000 units of next generation iPhones have already been shipped by Foxconn through customs in Henan province, China. These handsets are reportedly on their way to the U.S., UK, Netherlands and Italy.
