So you’re eyeing the iPhone Duo. Before you preorder, know this: The iPhone Duo versus iPhone 18 Pro fight is closer than you might think, but the folding phone loses by more than a few rounds.
Apple’s latest flagships launched together during Wednesday’s Surprise and Shine event. But to achieve its cutting-edge design, the Duo trades some camera and other features that the two iPhone 18 Pro models keep. Here’s what you’d give up if you buy the first folding iPhone.
Where iPhone Duo beats iPhone 18 Pro
Before we go into the advantages of the iPhone 18 Pro models, it’s only fair to point out why there’s so much excitement about the iPhone Duo. The folding design let Apple build in the largest screen ever in an iPhone. The handset’s 7.6-inch inner screen is 50% larger than the one in the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a whopping 80% larger than the one in the iPhone 18 Pro.
That extra-large display means there’s room for software features not in any other iPhone, including side-by-side multitasking.
But don’t think that makes the iPhone Duo the automatic winner in a comparison with the two iPhone 18 Pro models. Apple’s first foldable loses out in quite a few categories.
iPhone 18 Pro advantages start with the camera
While screen size is important, so is the camera. And the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max both gained a variable aperture this year. It’s the first for any iPhone.
From f/1.48 to f/4.0, the feature allows you to shift the lens between four settings. That gives photographers more control over things like depth of field and light.
But the Duo does not include a variable-aperture camera. Instead, its 48MP Fusion Main camera is fixed.
The iPhone Duo also misses out on the new Pro Controls interface. On the iPhone 18 Pro, it unlocks manual aperture, shutter speed and white balance. None of that carries over to the foldable.
The Duo also loses out on a telephoto lens
The iPhone Duo features an optical-quality 2x zoom built into the main camera. But that’s not the same as a dedicated telephoto lens. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max both have a separate telephoto camera, offering true optical zoom well beyond 2x.
The Duo’s camera island tops out at two lenses — a 48MP Fusion Main and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide.
There’s no LiDAR either. That sensor has shipped with every Pro iPhone since the iPhone 12 Pro, but not iPhone Duo. In the Pro models, it enables faster autofocus in low light and offers more accurate portrait depth mapping.
The Duo’s front camera is also a step down. Its outer Center Stage camera is 12MP. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max both use an 18MP Center Stage camera instead.
Pro-level video and editing tools stay off the iPhone Duo
The list of missing extras continues into video and editing. ProRAW, ProRes and Log recording are all absent from the Duo. So is the broader set of Pro camera controls tied to those formats.
Apple’s new Apple Reference Image system that verifies a photo hasn’t been tampered with only works with the iPhone 18 Pro’s main lens.
None of this will matter to someone who just wants to fold their phone and scroll. But it does mean the Duo isn’t aimed at serious photo or video work.
Face ID and the Action button don’t make the cut
Apple also cut two long-standing hallmarks from the Duo. Face ID is gone, and in its place is Touch ID. Similar to the iPad Air, it’s built into the power button.
And there’s no Action Button either. That leaves the Duo without a hardware control that has defined recent iPhone generations.
The Duo is also bigger and heavier when closed

Folded shut, the Duo isn’t a small phone. It’s 0.48 inches wider and 0.1 inches thicker than the iPhone 18 Pro. But it’s 1.27 inches shorter top to bottom. Pitched against the iPhone 18 Pro Max, it’s 0.24 inches wider and 0.1 inches thicker, but 1.79 inches shorter.
Weight follows the same pattern. At 254 grams, the iPhone Duo is 43 grams heavier than the 211-gram iPhone 18 Pro and just 5 grams heavier than the 249-gram iPhone 18 Pro Max.
There’s another quirk buried in the display specs. The Duo’s inner screen runs at 430 pixels per inch, which is lower than the 460 ppi on its own outer display. That could be the trade-off of stretching a folding OLED panel across a larger, thinner surface.
Pricing puts the Duo well above the Pro Max
All of this comes at a premium. The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB. And pricing rises to $2,199 for 512GB, $2,599 for 1TB and $3,199 for the top 2TB option. That’s roughly $700 to $800 more than the equivalent iPhone 18 Pro Max tier.
There’s also a longer wait. Duo preorders open October 16 at 5 a.m. Pacific time, with the device coming in stores on October 23. You can preorder the iPhone 18 Pro models starting Saturday, September 12, and they hit store shelves on September 18.
The takeaway is simple. The Duo isn’t trying to out-spec the Pro line. Apple seems to be positioning it more like a bigger, foldable sibling to the iPhone Air.
Anyone who uses the telephoto lens, RAW capture or Face ID every day should definitely stick with the iPhone 18 Pro.
