Apple TV jailbreak for tvOS 10.1 is coming soon

Apple TV owners still running tvOS 10 or tvOS 10.1 will soon get a jailbreak that allows them to run unauthorized third-party software. Hackers have confirmed that work on the tool is finished and that it will be available to download soon.

After Luca Todesco released his Yalu jailbreak for iOS 10.0 to iOS 10.2, it was discovered that many of the exploits that made it possible were also present in some of the latest versions of tvOS. Since then, hackers have been working to modify it for the latest Apple TV.

Jonathan Levin, an expert on the workings of iOS, was one of the people behind the project. He confirmed on Twitter this week that the tvOS jailbreak “is finally done” after months of tweaking, and will be available to download soon.

The hack should work on tvOS versions 10 and 10.1, however, it’s unlikely to be successful with tvOS 10.1.1 (or subsequent releases), which includes patches for the exploits used by Yalu.

Just like an iOS jailbreak, this Apple TV hack will allow users to run unauthorized third-party software on tvOS. It’s not quite as exciting, however: Apple TV has a significantly smaller jailbreak community, and support from developers is still lacking.

While you will be able to side-load apps, then, you won’t be able to get your hands on any neat third-party tweaks for tvOS just yet. You won’t even get a Cydia store, which is yet to make its way from iOS to Apple TV. But it’s only a matter of time now that tvOS is more popular.
