90% Of iPhone 5 Users Don’t Have A Problem With Apple Maps

By

mapsiphone

Apple Maps have received a WWE beat down of bad publicity since iOS 6 launched a few weeks ago, but maybe all the drama was a bit overblown. In a survey of 4,300 customers conducted by ChangeWave Research, ninety percent of iPhone 5 owners claimed they “haven’t experienced any problem” with Apple’s Maps app. Six percent of those surveyed said that they think Apple Maps is somewhat of a problem, and only three percent claimed it’s a very big problem

The survey also discovered that one-in-three consumers plan to buy the iPhone 5 in the future, and that 31% of consumers think that Apple switching to the new Lightning port will be “somewhat of a problem” because of the extra costs of buying new cables and adapters.

Have You Actually Used Passbook Yet? [Let’s Talk]

By

passbookapp

Passbook is supposed to be one of the big new features of iOS 6. Its magical card keeping system is supposed to help you ditch all your coupons, tickets, passes, rewards cards, and maybe even replace your wallet all together someday. The only problem is that there aren’t a lot of places you can actually use Passbook yet.

It’s not that Passbook isn’t a great feature. It’s awesome. People really want to use it. The MLB wants it to replace their ticketing system someday. But because it’s only been out for a few weeks, there are a limited number of apps that take advantage of it, which makes it seem like a bit of a let down. On the CultCast last night we talked about how we haven’t had the opportunity to use Passbook much, but we’re wondering what your experience has been with it so far. Have you actually used it? If so, what do you think? If you haven’t used it, what can be done to get more businesses and people on board?

Click here to go to the Cult of Mac Forums and tell us about your experiences with Passbook so far.

The new Lightning to 30 Pin adapter has not won over many Apple fans. No one wants to pay $30 to be able to use their old iPhone accessories with the new iPhone 5, but it’s better than buying a new accessory altogether, right?

Double Helix Cables finally got their new dock adapter in the mail and naturally decided to tear it apart and find out what is inside. They found out that just like the new Lightning cables, Apple’s gone to some extra lengths to make the Lightning to 30 Pin Adapter unhackable and uncounterfeitable.

Create Beautiful Photosets Right On Your iPhone With This App

By

photosettumblr

There are a few problems with sharing a batch of photos on the internet. You could make a Facebook album and toss around a link, but Facebook is messy, and ugly, and no one likes it. Or you can upload 12 different photos to Instagram in one hour and piss off all your friends. Or you can make a photoset of great pictures, but most people don’t know how to do that.

Tumblr is ready to change all those problems by introducing their new app called Photoset. It let’s you take a group of pictures, organize them, add captions and dates, and then upload them to the internet as a photoset so you can share them all together with just one link.

Apple Will Need To Make A Low End iPhone If They Want To Win China

By

fortunechinaapple

While Tim Cook has been CEO, Apple’s stock price has been soared into the stratosphere. Some believe Apple’s incredible growth is bound to plummet in the near future because, come on, how many more iPhones and iPads can they really sell to their U.S. and European customers?

In a new story for Fortune, Bill Powell argues that the sky’s still the limit for Apple, they just have to win in China. But Apple – with all its power and iconic devices that consumers lust for – is actually an underdog in the battle to win the Chinese handset market, and they’re going have to learn some new tricks if they hope to beat Samsung and others.

Suppliers just can't make the iPad mini's rear shell fast enough, apparently.
Suppliers just can't make the iPad mini's rear shell fast enough, apparently.

Some design changes to the new iPad Mini that was revealed via photos of leaked parts has halted the production of iPad Mini cases of at least one major case manufacturer. We’ve seen numerous cases and physical mockups of the rumored iPad Mini, so it’s not clear which changes have caused the production delays.

According to Japanese site Macotakara, a large OEM mobile accessory maker noticed that the round shape of the iPad Mini has changed and they may have to drop their designs based on leaked iPad Mini parts.

13-inch MacBook Pro With Retina Display Should Launch In Q4 [Rumor]

Apple's latest EFI update for the Retina MacBook Pro should be avoided if possible.
Apple's latest EFI update for the Retina MacBook Pro should be avoided if possible.

The 13-inch MacBook Pro has been rumored to be in production phases recently, but we’ve yet to see any reasonable leaks of the new Apple laptop. According to a new report though, the 13-inch MacBook Pros with Retina display are indeed on the way, and they should be in mass production sometime in the fourth quarter of 2012.

It’s not clear when the new MacBook will hit stores, but analyst Richard Shim of DisplaySearch speculates that it should be released sometime after the iPad Mini announcement that is rumored to take place on October 17th.

Apple’s Lightning Authentication Chip Has Been Successfully Cloned, Third Party Cables On The Way

By

lightningdockhack

Buying a whole set of new Lightning cables to replace the 30-pin connector cables we’ve been using for years has left a lot of iPhone 5 feeling a little bit blue. No one wants to spend $100 to buy five new cables, but cheap Chinese knock-offs have seemed out of reach thanks to the authenticator chip Apple’s used in the new data cables.

Hope has risen though, as clever Chinese hackers announced today that they’ve been able to successfully clone Apple’s Lightning Authenticator Chip, paving the way for cheaper third-party Lightning cables and accessories.

Here’s What The Packaging Of The New iPod Touch Looks Like [Video]

By

cult_logo_featured_image_missing_default1920x1080

“Ugh! An unboxing video? This isn’t 2008.” I know, guys, but seriously, the new iPod Touches have been rarer than a black unicorn playing kickball with a pack a wallabies. Like, hardly anyone’s even seen them yet in the real world, but here’s the first look. It’s an unboxing video from a guy in Japan that just received his iPod Touch.

The packaging is super minimalist – of course – and boy is the new iPod Touch skinny and beautiful. The unboxing video is a bit blurry, but we’ve got a comparison video of the iPod Touch against an iPhone 4 after the jump.

Since his death in 2011, countless pieces of art have been created in memory of Steve Jobs and his work at Apple, but this is one of the neatest statues we’ve seen that has been dedicated to the Apple co-founder.

Crafted by Ukranian artist, Cryil Maksimenko, the monument was installed in Odessa Ukraine on the one year anniversary of Steve Jobs’s death. It’s comprised of numerous gears, screws, bearings and other pieces from bicycles, motorcycles and cars, which looks fascinating when you look at it up close. Take a look at the pictures below and see for yourself.

who needs an iPad Mini when you can just use a magnifying glass?

The iPhone 5 has a slightly larger display than the iPhone 4S, but come on, no one wants to watch movies on a tiny little 4-inch screen. You could go and buy an iPad or iPad Mini if you really want to watch movies on your iOS device, or you could save your self a few hundred dollars and buy this odd accessory that magnifies your screen size.

Would You Buy A Colorful iPad Mini? [Let’s Talk]

By

rediPadmini

We’re expecting Apple to announce the iPad Mini really soon. Production is ramping up, and the keynote is rumored to take place next week. By now Apple’s got all the details in place for the first generation iPad Mini, and it’s more than likely only going to come in black and white, but what if Apple made the iPad Mini as colorful as the new iPod Touches?

Gizmodo’s been playing around with iPad Mini concept art, changing the back plating to match the new colors of the iPod Touch, and it looks really good. A red or yellow iPad Mini would look pretty sweet, and because it’s going to be a cheaper tablet, parents are probably going to be buying a lot of iPad Mini’s for their kids at Christmas, and kids love the hell out of colorful products. Do you think Apple should release the iPad Mini in a rainbow of colors like they do with iPods and the original iMac? Tell us what you think over at the Cult of Mac forums.

If That Internet Explorer 9 Commercial Were Honest It’d Look Like This [Video]

By

post-194623-image-70e70bbc026d651fc3325c333cb9a358-jpg

You’ve seen Microsoft’s famous Internet Explorer 9 commercial, right? You know, the one with that catchy dub-step song and all the crazy graphics of IE being like superhero fast? They play it on TV all the time and the at movies so you must have seen it by now. It’s not really that realistic though, so World Wide Interweb made an “honest version” of the commercial.

Bottom line: Switch to Mac and use Chrome.

Foxconn Workers Strike After iPhone 5 Pressures Cause Fistfights

By

hi-852-foxconn-workers

The iPhone 5 is the most complex phone Apple’s ever made, which makes it extra hard for Foxconn’s employees to assemble. There’s so much pressure at Foxconn to produce an increased amount of iPhone 5s that some managers have been beat up by their workers after demanding too much.

According to a new report by China Labor Watch thousands of Foxconn workers have gone on strike due to the immense pressures involved with building the iPhone 5. The main problem is that unqualified workers are being asked to build intricate devices without proper training. They keep messing up and the quality control gets on to them and they get pissed.

Microsoft Starts Guerilla Surface Ad Campaign Near Chicago Apple Store

By

surfaceadbyapple

Microsoft is gearing up to launch Windows 8 really soon along with Windows 8 Phone and the Microsoft Surface to compete with the iPad. The Surface might even be released around the same times as Apple’s iPad Mini, which could make the tablet wars pretty interesting.

Getting a jump start on their Surface ad campaigns, Microsoft has littered urban areas with guerrilla Surface ads and the lastest ones have been placed near a highly trafficked Apple Store in the Lincoln Park area of Chicago.

Consumer Reports Says The iPhone 5 Is A ‘Winner’ And Apple Maps Aren’t That Bad

By

consumerreports

The advocacy group Consumer Reports wasn’t too friendly toward the iPhone 4, even after Apple offered free bumpers. They didn’t even like the iPhone 4S either. But with the iPhone 5 they’re changing their tune and saying that the iPhone is “among the best smartphones in our Ratings and the best iPhone yet.”

After conducting a series of tests on the iPhone 5, Consumer Reports concluded that the iPhone 5 doesn’t just surpass the iPhone 4S but also a number of other Android smartphones. They even said that despite the widespread criticism its received, Apple Maps is “competent enough.”

You Can Now Transform Your Browser Into A Virtual iPod Classic

By

Way easier to use than the iPod nano, the iPod Click Wheel was a brilliant and intuitive solution to the question of how you scroll through hundreds of songs in your pocket. The iPod Classic lives on, but its UI could certainly do with a refresh. Forget video and photos -- these can be done on your iPhone. Instead Apple should focus on adding the basics: Wi-Fi sync, a podcast client, and iTunes Match.Don’t think of this as reinventing the wheel; more like bringing it up to date.

I love the iPod Classic. I don’t own one. But I love it all the same and wish it still played an important roll in my life, the way it used to back in 2006. Luckily, the iPod Classic is now alive on your computer.

Inventika Solutions created this virtual iPod Classic that functions just like the real deal. You can play music on it, move your mouse around the click-wheel to navigate through the menu options, and click play and fast-forward. It’s beautiful time waster for a Friday, so you should go play with it right now in honor of all the iPods you’ve loved.

Star Wars Angry Birds Might Be Coming On October 8th

By

angrybirdsjedi

How does an Angry Bird hold a lightsaber if they don’t have any hands? Maybe they’re able to use The Force and to help the weld a lightsaber and slice through mean little piggies. I don’t know. But we might find out real soon. On Twitter this morning Angry Birds posted a linkto their Tumblr where readers can find a GIF of an Angry Bird wearing a jedi cloak with a lightsaber.

The only info we’re given is, “Times Square, New York, October 8th, 10am EST. HINT: Head to Toys R Us at 8am EST!” Is Rovio launching a new Star Wars Angry Birds game, or will it just be Angry Birds Star Wars toys? Your guess is as good as ours.

Here’s A Quick Way To Make Your Broken iPhone Look Cool Again [Image]

By

webbing

You broke the back glass of your iPhone 4, but you’re not eligible for an iPhone 5 upgrade just yet. Maybe you forgot to buy AppleCare+. Yeah, you could go and get the back glass replaced for $29, but if you want to save some money and make your iPhone look unique while you wait for your upgrade eligibility you can try what this Redditor did.

Rather than buy a new back plate they added splashes of paint or nail polish into the cracks to give it a funky look. Who knows what will happen if that paint seeps into the components, but when your iPhone is already busted, you might as well throw caution to the wind and try something weird.

The Best Steve Jobs Moments In History [Video Gallery]

By

stevevid

Steve Jobs had a stage presence like no one else. He was just pedaling tech products, but the man captivated his audiences like he was Jimi Hendrix or Elvis or John Lenon. Steve didn’t just introduce a new computer or new iPod, he was selling a philosophy and way of life, and once he activated his reality distortion field on stage you were spellbound by his performance.

There are tons of amazing Steve Jobs videos on the internet, but we’ve gone out and collected the ones that we think are the best. Not just the videos where he introduces products, but also his candid interviews where Steve reveals his thoughts on life. We hope you enjoy them just as much as we do.

The Original Mac Factory Won’t Be Getting Museum Treatment

By

macfactory

After the death of Steve Jobs last year the city of Fremont wanted to celebrate Jobs’s work by registering his original Macintosh factory as a place of historical significance. Fremont’s city council quickly went to work on getting the Mac factory – which was a state-of-the-art automation facility at the time – registered, but found out that the building isn’t old enough to meet federal criteria for a historic designation.

According to federal criteria, a building must be at least 50 years old to be registered as a historic place of significance, and Apple’s Mac factory is only 30 years old. Fremont City Council spent $45,000 in the effort to get the factory listed before realizing they wouldn’t be able to do so.

Apple Has Already Banned The Perfect Apple Fanboy Portable Speaker

By

iaudio2

Apple’s legal team is freaky fast, and they don’t mess around. Yesterday we saw these portable speakers by iAudio2 that feature a glowing Apple logo on the casing. They’re small and probably sound like crap because they’re so cheap, but they look great. Too great. And we warned that if you wanted to get one you should act quick because Apple would be coming out with the ban hammer real fast.

Well, Apple has already sent iAudio2 a cease and desist letter telling them they better stop the sales of the iAudio2 immediately, or else. But iAudio2 has decided they’re not done having their fun just yet, and that even though Apple said to stop selling their product immediately, they’re going to keep selling them for the next 24hours before they run away scared. Unless of course Apple calls again, then they’ll stop immediately.

Here’s iAudio’s full letter to customers regarding the situation:

Watch This Old Man Steal An iPhone From A Baby [Video]

By

cult_logo_featured_image_missing_default1920x1080

We’ve seen all kinds of ridiculous and terrible Apple thefts, but this guy tops all of them by literally stealing an iPhone from a baby. It’s hard to make out the details in the video, but inside the carriage is a 20-month old baby, happily watching Barney on an iPhone while her mom is distracted with some shopping. The man walks up to the carriage, glances up, snatches the iPhone out of the baby’s hands and then walk away like nothing happened.

The worst part about it is police say the nasty old man followed the mom and her child into the store and deliberately targeted them knowing it’d be an easy crime to commit. The baby wasn’t harmed, but police are still looking for the suspect.
