Apple Says Goodbye To YouTube By ‘Rickrolling’ Developers

By

rickroll

Yesterday, Apple officially announced that the YouTube app will no longer be a default staple of iOS. While Google is working on a standalone app, Apple has informed developers that they will need to change their embedded YouTube URLs if they want them to continue to work.

In the changelog for iOS 6 beta 4, Apple explained the changes by linking to a video for one of the internet’s oldest memes – Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up video.

Do You Ever Use The YouTube App On Your iPhone? [Let’s Talk]

By

youtube

When the iPhone first came out I remember using the YouTube app almost everyday for the first couple of months. It was amazing to be able to stream videos anywhere I had service, even if it took forever for them to buffer. It was magic. I couldn’t get enough. And then I stopped using it.

Now the YouTube app feels like a clunky old dinasaur. I get annoyed when a link opens a YouTube video up in the app rather than the web browser, and I hide the app in my “Apps I Wish I Could Just Delete” folder, along with Stocks, NewStand, and a few others.

Do you ever use the YouTube app? Why or why not?

Apple Adds ‘Bluetooth Sharing’ Feature To iOS 6 Beta 4

By

bluetooth

Along with the removal of YouTube as a default app, one of the new features of iOS 6 beta 4 is the ability to share data via Bluetooth. It’s not exactly clear what kind of purpose Bluetooth Sharing will serve.

It might be linked to the iPod Nano as a watch where users will be able to view text messages, weather, answer calls, and more by tapping on their iPod Nano when the latest version is released.

Apple Just Removed The Default YouTube App From Latest iOS 6 Beta

By

youtube

Apple just released iOS 6 beta 4 to developers. So far it looks like there are a few small bug fixes and performance enhancements except for one unexpected surprise – Apple has removed the YouTube app from the iPhone and iPad.

It’s no secret that Apple has been trying to remove Google’s app from iOS and replace them with better alternatives. Some might think YouTube’s removal isan act of war, but we think it’s just as likely that Apple removed YouTube as a default app just because of plain obsolescence.

Partly Cloudy Might Be The Beautiful iOS Weather App You’ve Been Waiting For

By

partlycloud2

Minimalist weather apps must be the current hot trend among developers right now because we’ve seen a slew of pretty new iOS weather apps hit the App Store recently. If the last three weather apps we covered haven’t quite done it for you, maybe Partly Cloudy will.

Partly Cloudy is different from most weather apps in that it displays all the information you would need to know for a single day in one unique and compelling infographic. Modeled on a traditional clock face, Partly Cloudy’s infographic presents weather data in a fun new way that’s also very useful.

NASA Used A Lot Of MacBooks To Get The Curiosity Rover To Mars

NASA's heroes in the Mission Control room working from their Macs

Did you hear that we touched down on Mars? Again. Late last night NASA’s rover Curiosity successfully carried out a very challenging landing on Mars so that it can explore the red planet and send data back to Earth.

How’d it get there? First there was a bunch of rocket science stuff that we don’t really understand, but the landing sequence was guided and watched by a bunch of NASA brainiacs on their MacBooks Pros. Who says hipsters are the only ones that use a Mac?

Here’s another picture of the NASA MacBook setup:

Apple Has Spent Over $1 Billion Advertising The iPhone And iPad Since Launch

By

money

Are Apple products truly superior to the competition? Or are they just marketed a lot better? Either way, there’s no denying that Apple can build hype around a product like no other tech company on the planet, but all that superb marketing ain’t cheap.

Testifying during the Apple vs Samsung trial today, Phil Schiller revealed that Apple has spent over $1 billion marketing the iPad and iPhone since their respective launches.

Apple Wanted To Design A Car Before They Made The iPhone

By

icar

Apple has always had a lot of “crazy” ideas that they throw around the company and see if it’s something they could do really well. The iPhone and iPod came about because Apple was frustrated with their MP3 players and cellphones, so they decided to see if they could do it better.

In the past there were even rumors that Steve Jobs wanted to design a car. Well during Phil Schiller’s testimony this morning at the Apple vs Samsung trial we found out that those iCar rumors actually had some serious weight behind them.

Turn Your iPad Into Your Favorite Classic Book With These Neat iPad Cases

By

orange

Even though the iPad is a really great gaming device, I pretty much only use it to read. It’s great, it just doesn’t feel like all the books I love with their neat cover art.

Out of Print is a new company that is trying to get people to start reading more by promoting classic literature in cool ways. Their latest product is a series of iPad cases designed to look like classic books by using the same materials used in real book covers.

No One Knows What’s Inside This New Secret Apple Building

By

secretcompoud

See that big building right there? It’s part of Apple’s huge new data center over in North Carolina that powers all the iCloud magic that makes your iOS experience possible. Apple’s data center compound is massive. It comes with a 500,000 square foot data center, a 100-acre solar farm, a 4.8-megawatt fuel cell array, and a few other little buildings sprinkled all over.

The little 21,000 square foot building in the picture above is what Apple’s calling a “tactical data center.” No one knows just what it’s supposed to be, and of course Apple’s not going to tell anyone. So Wired jumped in their spy plane to get a closer look, and this is what they found out:

This Sony Walkman Is The Device Samsung Thinks Inspired The iPhone

By

sonyiphone

Samsung has been trying to accuse  Apple of ripping off Sony’s design as the inspiration for the iPhone as a way to justify Samsung’s own smartphone copying tactics. Their argument is based on a prototype iPhone mockup by Shin Nishibori created in 2006 that was supposed to look like an iPhone that Sony would make.

Shin’s mockup was requested after an Apple designer read a profile on Sony’s top designer in Businessweek. Thing is, the article wasn’t about Sony’s smartphones at all, it was about their newest Walkman – the NW-A1200 (pictured above).

What Do You Think Apple Will Name The Next iPhone? [Let’s Talk]

By

iphone5

Apple is going to release the iPhone 5 in just a couple of weeks. We’re so excited that we made one of those cute little paper chain date-countdown things. You know, the kind you made in 3rd grade to countdown till the end of the school year? Anyway, the “iPhone 5” is going to be announced soon, except the problem is we know it’s not going to be called the iPhone 5.

Why? Because that’d just be silly. The next iPhone will be the sixth generation iPhone. The press has just been calling it the iPhone 5 for the last 9 months because it’s an easy-to-understand placeholder for what will come after the iPhone 4S. So what will the next iPhone be called? We’re not totally sure, which is exactly where you come in.

What do you think Apple will call the next iPhone? Will they go with “iPhone 4G” because it will have LTE? Or maybe it will follow the iPad and be called “the new iPhone? Or something completely different? Tell us what you think in the Forums.

By

attretail

When AT&T reported last month that their iPhone activations only grew by 3% compared to the last quarter, a few analysts were scratching their heads at first but decided people probably weren’t buying as many new iPhones because of iPhone 5 rumors.

But what if there was a more sinister hand at play in the slumping iPhone sales? According to a new report, that’s exactly what’s happening as AT&T Regional Retail Sales Managers have instructed store managers to stop trying to sell the iPhone.

This Monstrous Mech Suit Is The Coolest iPhone Accessory You’ll Never Own

By

robot

This thing is absolutely insane. That’s all we can think of when watching the video of this huge mech suit built by Suidobashi Heavy Industries. Not only is it gigantic, but it’s fully functional, with robotic arms, BB gatling guns, water bottle launchers, and a kick-ass cockpit that looks like something out of your favorite video game.

The Kuratas, is a 13-foot, 4.4-ton metal mech suit. The best part is that you can completely control it with your iPhone or jump in the cockpit and run around town terrorizing dogs, cats, and little old ladies. The only catch is that it costs a whopping $1.35million, so most of us will only be able to dream about it. But if you have a few extra mill to spare, Suidobashi made this handy operation instructions video about the Kuratas –

Apple’s Walled Garden Is Infested With Zombies

By

appstore

Every time Apple holds a keynote or earning call they love to brag about how many apps are available in the App Store. Right now Apple’s boasting that there are 500,000 apps for the iPhone, which you know, sounds really freaking amazing when you’re thinking about buying and iPhone. Think of all the cool stuff you could with 500,000 different apps.

Yes, the App Store is awesome and it’s packed with some truly solid apps, but the truth is that most of the 500,000 apps that Apple brags about don’t ever get noticed. In fact, a recent analysis revealed that two-thirds of all apps in the App Store are “zombies,”  meaning they never get downloaded, are invisible to users, and have no ranking.

Jony Ive Says Apple Nearly Axed iPhone Due To Flaws With Dialing

By

jony

Apple is one of the world’s only companies that isn’t content to push out a great product with a few flaws. They want everything to be perfect. It’s one of their biggest strengths, but it also prevents a lot of neat products and ideas from reaching production. It turns out that the iPhone was no different during its inception, and even after all the cool prototyping and public demand for a great smartphone, Apple nearly axed the iPhone before it was launched.

Apple’s chief designer, Jony Ive, stated in a recent interview that small design flaws with the iPhone nearly caused it to get shelved, because even though the iPhone was good, it wasn’t excellent until they figured out how to fix some fundamental problems, like the proximity sensor.

Do The New Apple Commercials Make Mac Users Look Dumb? [Let’s Talk]

By

Some Mac users felt Apple's 'Genius' ads made them look stupid.
Some Mac users felt Apple's 'Genius' ads made them look stupid.

Ever since Apple debuted their new Mac ad campaign during the Olympic Opening Ceremonies last week the internet has been buzzing like crazy with some people saying they’re good while many others think they’re terrible. Even Apple’s former ad-man Ken Segall came out yesterday and bashed the ads.

Apple’s definitely made some bad ads in the past, but are these the worst? What do you think about the ads? Do they make Mac users look like a bunch of Genius-dependent boneheads? Or do the ads appeal to people who might be afraid to use technology? We want to talk about it with you guys in the forums, so head on over and let us know what you think.

Use This Quick Trick To Force Microsoft Word To Use Retina Display

By

retinaword

Even though Apple’s Pages app is a pretty solid word processing tool, a lot of Mac users still love to use Microsoft Word. If you’re one of them, that’s cool, we won’t judge you. The biggest problem with using Word on a new MacBook Pro with Retina display is that it looks pretty ugly because it hasn’t been updated to take advantage of the Retina display yet.

The great news for Word fans is there’s a really easy work around that will force your Microsoft Word app to use your MacBook Pro’s Retina display, which makes the app look a lot better. All you got to do is follow these quick steps and you’ll be on the path to more Retina goodness.

Samsung Tried To Send Former Apple Designer $60 To Testify In Trial

By

sonymockup

Last week we found out that back in 2006 Apple Industrial Designer, Shin Nishibori, was asked to create mockups of what an iPhone-like device would look like if created by Sony. Nishibori’s prototype mockups have become a hot item of debate in the Apple vs Samsung trial as Samsung was hoping to use them as evidence that Apple copied Sony.

The court recently dismissed the images, but Samsung wanted to get their creator on the stand. Even though Shin Nishibori no longer works for Apple and now lives in Hawaii, Samsung was hoping to subpoena him to the court and have him testify against Apple. How were they going to get him there? A $60 check.

Apple Employee Gets Selected For Apple vs. Samsung Jury Duty

By

applevssamsung

Jury selection for the Apple vs Samsung trial has just gotten underway today. The court will be selecting jurors from a pool of citizens called in to be potential jurors. To ensure the jury is impartial to the proceedings, the judge has been asking potential jurors if they work for Apple, Samsung, Google, or Motorola, or have relatives that do. Turns out a lot of potential jurors are linked to Apple, and one is even an Apple employee.

During the selection process this morning it was revealed that one of the potential jurors is an Apple employee. There’s no shady practices going on though. U.S. Citizens are selected at random to perform jury duty, so it’s mere coincidence that he was a put in the Apple vs Samsung potential juror pool.

How The Smart Cover Security Vulnerability Reunited A Man With His Lost iPad

By

dark_gray_smart_cover-e1319465768894.jpg

Losing your iPad is probably a horrifying experience. It’s never happened to me, but if it did I would probably roll up into the fetal position and sob uncontrollably on the hard floor of the city bus until someone gave it back. Maybe I’m exaggerating a tiny bit, but it’d be a really really sad day in my life.

The worst part about losing your iPad is knowing that someone else is going to find it and they’re not going to give it back. All of your photos, iBooks, and hard work on Fieldrunners 2 is now theirs. Except sometimes an incredible story pops up that restores your faith in humanity, like how this kid on Reddit found a lost iPad and worked on finding the owner for 4 months.
