Here’s A Truly Useful Set Of Shortcuts For The iOS Notification Center [Jailbreak]

By

tap to widgets

A couple of days ago I showed you two handy jailbreak tweaks for Notification Center. “Compose” and “Kamera” give quick access to Mail, Messages, and the iPhone’s cameras. Along with tweaks like NCSettings, there’s a lot you can do enhance Notification Center on a jailbroken iOS device.

A Cydia tweak called “Tap to Widgets” is one of the most useful Notification Center tools I’ve seen for jailbreakers.

Apple Credits Evad3r Hackers For Uncovering 4 Out Of 6 Exploits In Latest iOS Release

By

Screen Shot 2013-03-19 at 2.38.19 PM

For years Apple has been playing a game of cat and mouse with jailbreakers. Apple releases a new version of iOS, hackers get busy finding security vulnerabilities to exploit, a new jailbreak comes out utilizing those hard-earned exploits, and Apple fixes the security holes in a new iOS version. The cycle has been happening for years.

A team of hackers called the Evad3rs were responsible for the recent iOS 6 Evasi0n jailbreak, and Apple just released iOS 6.1.3 to patch the related security holes. Of the 6 exploits that were fixed, Apple has publicly credited 4 to the Evad3rs, all of which are chained together to give hackers root access to iOS.

IMG_2201

Wish you could do more with Notification Center in iOS 6? Besides the couple of stock widgets Apple includes, there isn’t a lot of functionality to be found. On my iPhone, it usually feels like a waste of space. What if you could compose an email or quickly access your camera alongside notifications?

Jailbreaking allows you to do that and more, thanks to a couple of handy Cydia tweaks.

Lego Lightning Dock For The iPad Appeals To The Kid In All Of Us

By

thedailybrick-lego-ipad-dock-3

There aren’t many good docks out there for Apple devices with the new Lightning connector, especially the fourth-gen iPad and iPad mini. While you’re on the hunt for a viable docking solution, check out this neat iPad dock made entirely of Legos. It’s from the same people who made the iPhone 5 Lightning Lego dock we showed you last year.

It’s a pretty cheap dock alternative that appeals to the kid in all of us. You assemble the kit yourself, and it works with any iPad that uses a Lightning connector.

Starwood Hotels recently opened Aloft Cupertino, a slick hotel that is located two blocks away from Apple’s famous One Infinite Loop headquarters in Cupertino, California. Given its close proximity to Apple itself, it only makes sense for Aloft to put Apple products into its rooms.

Unlike the crappy cable boxes that are usually in hotels, Aloft has installed an Apple TV in each of its 123 rooms with full access to all of the set-top box’s features, including AirPlay.

Facebook has released an update to its iOS app that adds a few improvements, most notably the ability to change your cover photo. For some reason this feature has been missing all this time, and now it’s finally been implemented.

Group messaging has also been streamlined. Facebook says it takes fewer taps to start a group message, and it’s easier to name and find conversations in your inbox.

Phil Schiller: Android Is Fragmented And The “Experience Isn’t As Good As An iPhone”

By

schiller

Phil Schiller, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, has called out Android multiple times recently. It’s only been a few days since Schiller warned Android users to “stay safe out there,” and now he’s gone on the offensive in a brief interview with The Wall Street Journal.

None of Schiller’s comments are particularly surprising, as Apple executives (Schiller included) frequently make jabs at the competition from the stage of a new product keynote.

Screen Shot 2013-03-07 at 11.41.47 AM

Marvel Unlimited is a subscription service that offers access to a catalog of 13,000+ comics spanning a period of 70 years. After a newer comic has been in circulation for 6 months, it makes its way to Marvel Unlimited in digital form. The service costs $10 per month or $60 for a yearly subscription.

In the past you could only access Marvel Unlimited through an ugly Flash-based reader on the desktop or a clunky HTML5 app. Now Marvel has released a native iOS app for the subscription service. You can also read previews and browse dozens of full issues for free.

Intel Once Again Rumored To Be Working On iOS Device Chips With Apple

By

A6

Apple has been using Intel’s desktop processors in the Mac since 2005. The next-gen Haswell processor is expected to come in the next iteration of the iMac.

For years, a reoccurring rumor has been that Intel will eventually provide mobile processors for iOS devices. But Apple has been designing its own ‘A series’ of chips for the iPhone and iPad based on ARM. Would Apple really abandon what it’s doing on ARM for Intel, a chip maker that’s been really struggling on mobile?

Now another report claims that Apple and Intel have recently discussed a mobile partnership.

By

Screen Shot 2013-03-06 at 4.24.55 PM

There’s no shortage of weather apps in the App Store. Every week it seems like a new weather app is enticing us with beautiful graphics and a unique design aesthetic.

While the apps are plentiful, there hasn’t been any mobile-oriented hardware related to checking the weather. It’s an untapped market many haven’t given much thought to. In the age of the iPhone, what value does a traditional thermometer even have?

Robocat has already put out some great iOS weather apps, and now it’s launching a Kickstarter campaign for Thermodo, a physical thermometer which integrates with the iPhone.

By

Adding photos and videos to a conversation in the iOS Messages app isn’t as streamlined as it could be. You have to tap the little camera icon, then tap whether you want to take a new photo or select one from your Camera Roll. It’s functional, but not optimal.

Let’s take a look at two jailbreak tweaks that help streamline the process of adding photos to messages.

By

Screen Shot 2013-03-06 at 5.06.43 PM

Did you know that Chipotle had an iPhone app? Well it does, and that app allows you to order from your iPhone and skip the line when you arrive to inhale your burrito goodness. It’s a beautiful idea, but the app itself has not been so beautiful for the past few years. Today Chipotle updated its app with iPhone 5 support, the ability to select brown rice, and so, so much more.

Jimmy Iovine was good friends with Steve Jobs. But would Jobs have hired him?

For the past several months it’s been rumored that Apple is working on an iTunes music subscription service to compete with the likes of Spotify and Rdio. Google is reportedly also looking into some sort of music streaming service involving YouTube.

According to a new report, Apple executives recently met with a high-profile music industry executive to discuss business economics and the mysterious “Project Daisy.”

How To Save Links To Pocket, Instapaper, Readability Anywhere In iOS [Jailbreak]

By

Readr iPhone

Apple’s Reading List lets you save and sync links in iOS and OS X to read later on any iCloud-enabled device, but the feature is restricted to Safari. Due to the limited nature of Reading List and the fact that it hasn’t existed for that long, third-party services like Pocket and Instapaper are widely used for saving links to read later.

Apps like Tweetbot let you send links to Pocket or Instapaper quite easily, but what if you could send a webpage to your favorite read later service anywhere in iOS natively, including Safari? With a new jailbreak tweak called Readr, now you can.

Imangi Studios And Disney Partner Up Again To Release Temple Run: Oz

By

Temple Run Oz iPhone

The wildly successful Temple Run franchise is at it again with a new version based on the Oz The Great and Powerful Disney movie directed by Sam Raimi. Temple Run: Oz is built on Temple Run 2 but features some unique gameplay that’s appropriately themed for the coinciding movie release this Friday.

This isn’t the first time the small company behind Temple Run, Imangi Studios, has partnered with Disney; Temple Run: Brave was released last year.

iPhone 5S With Better Camera On Track For August Release, New iPads Coming Around April [Rumor]

By

iPhone 5S iPad 5 rumors

We’ve heard very little about the next-gen iPhone 5S, other than that the device is expected to feature a better camera. Some have speculated that the successor to the iPhone 5 will also come in more than two colors and maybe even have a fingerprint sensor. An iPhone 5S would assumedly ship sometime around the fall if Apple sticks to its track record.

Even less has been revealed about the fifth-gen iPad, apart from some unverified case leaks. Apple has always announced new iPads around the spring, but the iPad mini was released last fall.

Now a new report has claimed that the iPhone 5S is on track for an August release. The iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 are expected to arrive around April.

How A Celebrity Apple Analyst Lost Millions Of Dollars Betting Big On AAPL

By

Andy Zaky

Andy Zaky has been one of the most famous independent Apple analysts for years. The self-taught, 33-year-old investor has offered some of the most wildly accurate predictions on Wall Street, and in the past he’s been pretty spot on with his bullish calls to buy AAPL stock.

But something happened to Apple’s stock value after hitting its September 2012 high of $700+ per share. It suddenly plummeted, and it has continued to decrease for the past 5-6 months. Speculation abounds, but no one has been able to pinpoint exactly why AAPL has been—and still is—taking such a beating.

As you can imagine, many investors have lost a lot of money betting on Apple’s success over the past several months, and morale is weakening on Wall Street. Zaky is one of the best examples of how incorrectly predicting Apple’s stock value can have grave consequences.

Google has released a big update to its official Chrome browser for iOS devices. Chrome 25 comes with two big features: the ability to quickly recall browsing history by tapping and holding the back button, and the option to share webpages natively with the Messages app.

Over the next few days, Google says it will improve web searches in Chrome by displaying results right in the browser’s omnibox. Space will be maximized to display more results as well.

You Can Now Buy More Than Two iPad Minis At Once

By

Screen Shot 2013-03-01 at 5.18.53 PM

$328,671. That’s how much it would cost to buy 999 base model iPad minis. While you’re probably not going to be buying that many iPads anytime soon (at least I hope not), you may like to know that Apple now lets you buy more than two iPad minis at once. Each customer could previously only purchase a maximum of two.

Apple usually has this kind of restriction for new product purchases during the first few months of availability. Once supply catches up with demand, the restriction is lifted. In Apple’s online store, the iPad mini only recently became fully in stock after months of delayed shipping estimates. Now Apple is saying that it will ship new iPad mini orders within 24 hours.

Google Adds Its Own Version Of AirPlay To YouTube iOS App

By

Send to TV_iPhone

Google has a released a pretty big update for its YouTube iOS app that adds a “send to TV” option. The feature was added to Android last year.

This is basically Google’s version of AirPlay. It’s an open protocol that’s in Google TV, Xbox, PS3, and some new HDTV sets. Once you’ve paired with the device, the YouTube iOS app becomes a remote for discovering and playing back videos on the big screen.

The Flexible Glass Apple Would Need For An iWatch Won’t Be Ready For 3 More Years

By

it will be awhile before you'll be able to bend this around your wrist.
it will be awhile before you'll be able to bend this around your wrist.

It was recently reported that Apple is working on a wristwatch computer with a curved glass display. The glass was speculated to be Corning’s Willow Glass, a brand new technology that lets a thin pane of glass fold up like a newspaper. “The thinness, strength and flexibility of the glass has the potential to enable displays to be “wrapped” around a device or structure,” according to Corning.

If Apple were to release an iWatch in the next year or so, it would assumedly need Willow Glass to be ready for mass production. Unfortunately, it will be several more years before Corning’s flexible displays are ready for consumers.
