EXIF data: It’s the unsung hero of iPhoneography, and digital photography in general. It’s where location data is stored so you can see your pictures on a map. It remembers when you took that photo, what ISO you used, along with all kinds of other handy data (focal length, flash on or off, even the white balance setting you used).
But on iOS, the EXIF data is mostly hidden from you. But with EXIF-fi, you can not only read it but edit it.
I have far too many photo apps on my iPhone and iPad, but I only ever use one of them to shoot pictures – the built-in camera app. Why? Because it is fast and good. It captures the best the sensor has to offer, and it is accessible right from the lock screen.
But there is a new app which might tempt me away. It’s called PureShot, and it is pretty great.

LAS VEGAS, CES 2013 – I, like many of you, love my Olloclip. And while I don’t often use an iPhone case, when I do, I hate having to peel it off just to pop on the super-convenient accessory lens.
Thankfully, Olloclip has weathered the ordeal that was the iPhone 5 launch, and is now back to making cool new stuff. The latest is a case with a slide-open corner for use with the Olloclip. But it packs some really clever extra gimmicks.

Back to 2013, Ford has announced they’re opening up their AppLink service to all the iOS and Android app developers of the world, essentially creating an ecosystem full of apps that will make their cars even better. They’re calling their new initiative the Ford Developer Program, and I think it’s pretty cool.
LAS VEGAS, CES 2013 – Let’s be honest: any moron can crap out an iPhone case. Sketch out a quick model in CAD, send a few emails to someone in Shenzhen, and just a couple weeks later, a buttload of cheap plastic iPhone cases will hit your door. The fact that it’s literally this easy to make an iPhone case is what makes reporting on iPhone cases just so tedious: they are literally a multi-billion dollar industry fueled by brain farts.
Which is why I like Sculpteo, and was charmed as they lead me through a demonstration of their service. Unlike most of the bozos at CES, they aren’t hiding the fact that any moron can crap out an iPhone case. In fact, that’s their whole business: they want you to be that moron.
It seems like just last week that I was raving about Unbound – and that’s because it was. However, there is now yet another amazing app for browsing the photos in your Dropbox.
It’s called Heliog, and it is the equal of Unbound – although it takes quite a different approach.
Apple’s iOS devices have always been hot Christmas gifts, especially for young folks. This year was no exception. Mobile app analytics firm Distimo is reporting that App Store downloads spiked a staggering 87% on Christmas Day, and revenues went up 70%.
Mobile app analytics firm Distimo annually publishes a review of the past year’s growth and trends in the app space. For 2012, Distimo compared Apple’s App Store vs. Google Play on Android handsets. While both marketplaces are considered winners in their own right, the App Store is still where the real money comes from.
Google Play has technically been growing faster than the App Store in recent months, but the daily revenues generated in the App Store are still far greater than anything Google has been able to muster.
One of the last big holdouts has caved: The Wall Street Journal is now available on Apple’s Newsstand.

Unbound app is a Dropbox-linked photo viewer. Imagine if iOS’ built-in Photos app linked to Dropbox instead of needing you to dick around with iTunes and the flakey Photo Stream, and you have pretty much imagined Unbound.

The excellent Autostitch Panorama app is now available for the iPad, and it is as fantastic as ever. Unlike Apple’s own implementation of iOS panoramas on the iPhone 5, the Autostitch app does things the old-fashioned way, quilting together a patchwork of separate images.

Apps are a great gift to that person on your holiday shopping list that already has an iOS device. You used to be able to do this from in the App Store, but that was taken away as of iOS 6. iTunes gift cards were the only way to go.
Now, however, the option to send apps as gifts is back, along with a way to schedule the gifting email so you can better target a birthday or, say, winter holiday that might be coming up. Hint, hint.

Scannner Mini is a new iOS scanning app from Readdle, and it has one big feature: it’s free. Scanner Mini is a no-cost version of Readdle’s excellent Scanner Pro app, giving you everything it’s big brother has, minus the document sharing.
Remember the amazing Popsicolor? Of course you do (and if you don’t, go check it out). It’s the app that turns your photos into colorful watercolors that actually look like real watercolors, not terrible 1990s-era Photoshop-plugin-style watercolors.
It’s about to get a rather splendid 2.0 update, and the teaser video is above.
‘Tis the Season for icy corpses and carnivorous reindeer. Okay, maybe not the reindeer part, but there’s definitely a legion of undead terrorizing the North Pole and spreading Christmas fear. That’s right, our favorite zombie shooter title Dead Trigger has received a freakishly festive holiday update full of cold corpses, new weapons, and a jolly dead soul called Zanta.
Ensoul Contacts is such a great idea that it seems sure to be Sherlocked in a future version of OS X. Then again, Apple has so neglected both iPhoto and the Mac Contacts app that maybe the Ensoul app is safe. Here’s what it does: Takes photos from the Face section in iPhoto and assigns them to your contacts.
It’s genius, and it’s just $5 (for now at least).
