What happens when you use a three-finger tap on your Mac’s touchpad to look up a word? In olden times, it would bring up a dictionary definition, instantly. Today, it probably doesn’t do anything. Not for a few seconds at least. Or rather, it pops up a panel right away, but then it takes a few seconds to load whatever Siri reckons you might be looking for.

Mac shipments fell during the third quarter of 2019 as PC sales continued to grow, according to new estimates from Gartner.

Apple’s market share declined as a result, but the company maintains its fourth spot for now. And shipments will almost certainly be boosted soon by the launch of the all-new Mac Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro.

Apple webpage hints that macOS Catalina will ship next week

Apple hasn’t told us when we can expect the public release of macOS Catalina, but a clue on one of Apple’s regional websites suggests that it could very well be next week.

On Apple’s Danish website, it notes that Apple Arcade will launch on the Mac App Store on October 4. Given that Apple Arcade requires macOS Catalina to work, it suggests that this might be when Apple’s next-gen macOS will debut.

Apple will make the new Mac Pro in Texas

Apple today confirmed that its brand new Mac Pro will be manufactured in Austin, Texas. It will soon enter production at the same facility where the last Mac Pro was assembled.

The move is part of Apple’s commitment to U.S. economic growth, it says. It is currently on track to invest $350 billion into its home country by 2023.

In the olden days, when you wanted to replace your hard drive with a bigger one, you’d run a “secure erase” on it to completely remove any personal data. This would write zeros to the entire disk, overwriting anything already there.

But now, thanks to advances in storage tech, this no longer does the trick. (Not that you can change your own Mac SSDs now anyway.) The new secure-erase, says Apple, is to just encrypt your disk.

Google Chrome just got a big new update that improves upon two important features.

The version 76 release disables Flash by default to improve browsing performance, while Incognito Mode has been tweaked to prevent websites from detecting it.
