Apple Bans App Devs From Using Gold iPhone 5s In Promotional Materials

By

It’s almost a given that the iPhone 6 will feature a new, more-advanced camera — although there's been far less of a consensus on what form that camera is likely to take. Some things are known for sure: Apple recently snapped up Nokia’s PureView camera engineer Ari Partinen, although his impact is more likely to be felt on the iPhone 6s or iPhone 7.

Apple also recently received an electronic image-stabilization system instead of an optical one, essentially faking the stabilization technique using software instead of moving parts.

It’s likely that the iPhone 6 camera will have pixels that are 1.75 um instead of the iPhone 5s’ 1.5 um, too.

In what little advertising attention the iPhone 5s has received from Apple, the device’s new gold color option has been the main focal point. There are both TV and print ads in circulation that tout the gold, and the gold 5s is still the hardest to buy.

While Apple capitalizes on gold fever, the company has required that third-party developers not use the color in any of their marketing materials.

Apple Working On Fix For New 13-Inch Retina MacBook Pro Trackpad/Keyboard Issues

By

Today Apple acknowledged that a small number of its newest 13-inch Retina MacBook Pros have an issue that is resulting in the laptop’s trackpad and/or keyboard becoming unresponsive. Any machines that could be potentially affected by the glitch would have had to been purchased since Apple announced the new 13-inch model at its Oct 22nd iPad event.

“Apple is aware of rare circumstances where the built-in keyboard and Multi-Touch trackpad may become unresponsive on 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display (Late 2013) computers and is working on an update to resolve this behavior,” said the company. An Apple support forum thread with over 48,000 views is full of users who have been experiencing trackpad and keyboard glitches.

Until the update is available, Apple suggests closing the MacBook’s display for one minute to let it reset.

Fantastical 2 For iPhone Includes New iOS 7 Design, Reminders, And Price

By

I started using Fantastical on my iPhone the day it was released back in November of last year. Like other users of the fantastic (bad pun intended) Mac app, I couldn’t wait to have its natural language parsing on my iPhone. With Fantastical, you can just type “get lunch with Buster at 3 tomorrow” and be done. Far better than the poorly-designed rigamarole that is Apple’s Calendar app.

Today Flexibits, makers of Fantastical, released the biggest update to their iPhone calendar app since its original release. Fantastical 2 for iPhone is a completely new app that works only on iOS 7 and features a new design, new features, and yes, a price.

Apple: A Manufacturing Defect Has Caused Battery Drain On Some iPhone 5s Devices

By

iPhone-5s-back

Apple has released a statement to The New York Times confirming that a “small number” of iPhone 5s devices in the wild have a manufacturing defect that results in battery drainage. The 5s is supposed to have slightly improved battery life over the iPhone 5, but Apple says that these affected devices have subpar performance.

“We recently discovered a manufacturing issue affecting a very limited number of iPhone 5S devices that could cause the battery to take longer to charge or result in reduced battery life,” said Apple in the statement.

The good news? You don’t have to do anything if you’re worried your 5s is affected. Apple will be contacting you to offer a replacement.

Mavericks First-Week Adoption In North America Is Already Double What Mountain Lion’s Was

By

It has only been out for two days, but OS X Mavericks already accounts for 5.5% of OS X’s total web traffic in North America, according to tracking firm Chitika. For comparison, Mountain Lion adoption was only at 1.6% two days after its release next year. It took four days for Mountain Lion to reach Mavericks’ current adoption rate, so we’re looking at double the amount of people upgrading within the first week.

Mavericks’ success is probably tied to the fact that Apple has made it available for completely free. We should have more exact Mavericks numbers from Apple after its upcoming earnings call.

Vine Update Brings Multiple Drafts And Editing Tools

By

drafts

Today Twitter’s Vine app was updated with a few new features, most notably the ability to save multiple video drafts at once and editing tools.

Draft support, which Vine is calling “Sessions,” allows you to save up to 10 clips at once in the app. “Time Travel” means you can “remove, reorganize or replace” any clip before sharing. Tapping the green bar in the camera view enters Time Travel mode, and there’s also a new edit button while you’re reviewing a video.

You’ll start seeing the above image in your feed in the “coming week.” It’s a “one-time ad from the Instagram team that’s meant to give you a sense for the look and feel of the ads you will see.” Tapping the Sponsored label will teach you how ads will work.

Microsoft Tries To Discredit iWork As Competition, But Ends Up Looking Desperate

Apple has turned software pricing on its head, and Microsoft isn't happy about it.
Apple has turned software pricing on its head, and Microsoft isn't happy about it.

Yesterday Apple announced that all of its consumer software, including OS X Mavericks, is now free. Customers who buy Apple’s hardware will have full access to the completely new versions of iLife and iWork at no additional cost. It’s a bold move that The New York Times called a direct attack on Microsoft Office.

The decision to make iWork free wasn’t Apple’s only jab at Microsoft during yesterday’s keynote, and now the Redmond giant has gone on the defensive.

iOS 7.0.3’s “Reduce Motion” Option Is For All You Pukers Out There

Some pundits suggested that the look and feel of iOS 7 was designed to appeal to Asian users.
Some pundits suggested that the look and feel of iOS 7 was designed to appeal to Asian users.

“The zoom animations everywhere on the new iOS 7 are literally making me nauseous and giving me a headache.” That first post from an Apple support forum member on September 18th has since snowballed into a massive thread with over 640 replies and 57,000 views.

While it’s obviously a small portion of iOS 7’s 200 million+ user base, there’s a subset of the new operating system’s users that can’t handle all the zooming. Beyond the parallax effect, opening and closing apps is akin to jumping in and out of a mini vortex. “The whole look is just jarring,” said another forum member.

Apple released iOS 7.0.3 to the masses today, and nestled in the update is an amped up “Reduce Motion” option.

Apple has released iOS 7.0.3 following today’s keynote. The update is rolling out via OTA, and it is also available for direct download from Apple’s servers.

Included in 7.0.3 are a host of bug fixes, including one for a nasty glitch that was causing many iMessage users to pull their hair out. iCloud Keychain has also been added back to iOS 7 after its sudden removal during the beta process. Today’s update also fixes a software bug involving the iPhone’s accelerometer that got a lot of attention for causing incorrect measurements with the iPhone 5s.

Apple Unveils New iPad Mini With Retina Display [iPad Event]

By

Drooooool.
Drooooool.

The day has finally come. Apple has unveiled an iPad mini with Retina display. The second-gen model packs the new 64-bit A7 processor and the expanded LTE support in the iPad Air. Apple has also added another 128GB storage option to the Retina mini.

Color options for the new iPad mini are Space Grey and Silver, so no Gold this time. Apple has raised the price from $329 to $399, which likely has something to do with the higher expense of shipping a Retina display. Availability will begin “later in November.”

The first-gen iPad mini is still being sold, and Apple has lowered the price on that model to $299.

Apple Unveils Redesigned iWork Suite With Online Collaboration [iPad Event]

iLife isn’t Apple’s only software suite that’s getting love today. Eddy Cue also demoed new versions of iWork, Apple’s productivity suite that has been in desperate need of a redesign for years. A big addition is full file compatibility on any iOS or Mac device and on web, so anything can be opened and edited no matter where you are.

Perhaps the best new feature in the new iWork is online collaboration. That’s right, you can have multiple people edit a single document, even people who are “stuck on a PC,” as Cue said. iWork for iCloud makes it easy to log in on the web and edit if you don’t have access to a desktop app.

Screen Shot 2013-10-22 at 1.41.47 PM

After announcing new MacBook Pros, Apple’s Phil Schiller turned everyone’s attention to the Mac Pro. The all-new Pro was originally teased at WWDC in June, and today Schiller called it Apple’s “vision of the future of the pro desktop.” Schiller also revealed that the Mac Pro will be assembled entirely in the U.S, as was previously rumored.

After months of waiting, Schiller finally unveiled the machine’s base price: a hefty $2999. An exact release date has still not been announced, but Apple says it will be available for purchase before the “end of the year.”

Apple Oct 22 media invite

“We still have a lot to cover,” is Apple’s promise this time around. On October 15th, the company sent out press invitations for a media event that will be held at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco this coming Tuesday, October 22nd.

Last month we saw the unveiling of the iPhone 5s and 5c, and this second event is expected to center around new iPads. But that’s not all; the future of OS X, iOS 7, and the Mac are also rumored to be waiting in the wings.

Here’s what to expect from Apple’s October 22nd event:

Apple Airs First TV Ad For iPhone 5s, And It’s All Gold [Video]

By

video_metal_2x

Aside from some print ads, Apple’s advertising for the iPhone 5s has been quite scare compared to the iPhone 5c. Multiple iPhone 5c ads have aired on TV already, but the 5s hasn’t gotten any TV attention. Today the first ad dedicated to the iPhone 5s was finally released. The title is “Metal Mastered.”

As you can imagine, it’s all about the gold model, and the song is even by an artist named Goldfrapp. How appropriate. Liquid gold slowly forms into an iPhone like a Terminator, and the gold Touch ID ring around the home button is placed last as the finishing act.
