After announcing new MacBook Pros, Apple’s Phil Schiller turned everyone’s attention to the Mac Pro. The all-new Pro was originally teased at WWDC in June, and today Schiller called it Apple’s “vision of the future of the pro desktop.” Schiller also revealed that the Mac Pro will be assembled entirely in the U.S, as was previously rumored.
After months of waiting, Schiller finally unveiled the machine’s base price: a hefty $2999. An exact release date has still not been announced, but Apple says it will be available for purchase before the “end of the year.”
As you can imagine, the Mac Pro is an incredible powerhouse. Here are just some of the specs:
- Intel’s Xeon E5 with support for up to 12 cores
- Thunderbolt 2
- Up to 1TB of Flash storage
- 12GB of DRAM
- 256GB internal SSD
- Can power up to three 4K displays
Apple is excited about how professionals will receive the Mac Pro, and some examples of the machine in use in the video, photography, and music industries were mentioned from the stage today.

“Hefty?” I don’t consider $3k for a machine as powerful as this to be hefty. Sounds like a very reasonable price, especially considering previous Mac Pros were much more costly.
Weren’t people predicting upwards of $4,000-5,000 as the base price? (It is actually $4K for the 6-core model.) I’m actually surprised that the price is so low, given the innovative new design. It’s no less out of reach of my broke ass, but I’m impressed nonetheless.
