Silicon Valley marketing guru Regis McKenna is an old friend and colleague of Steve Jobs. Their history goes back to when McKenna’s firm designed the famous Apple logo back in 1977.
You know, then, that when McKenna talks about Jobs, the Apple founder gets his love and respect. Even so, McKenna says that Steve Jobs is just part of Apple’s recent success… and Apple’s new CEO, Tim Cook, just hasn’t gotten his fair share of credit for Apple’s massive growth.
McKenna says Jobs is undoubtedly a genius, but Tim Cook hasn’t gotten his fair share of the credit for Apple’s massive growth.
“He is as responsible for Apple’s success as Steve is,” he said. But why?

It looks as if just about every expat in Asia with a black turtleneck and some specs is working as a Steve Jobs impersonator.
After news broke yesterday that Apple had, for the second time in two years, lost an iPhone prototype at a San Francisco bar, the general reaction was one of incredulity. How could Cupertino carelessly misplace their prized corporate secrets twice in a row?
It happens more than you might think. In fact, we’ve got the exclusive scoop on how one guy walked out of his local Apple Store recently with something unique… a complete Time Machine backup of the Apple Store’s internal file server, filed with top secret and confidential Apple Store documents.
Even weirder? Apple just gave it to him.
Remember that radically different iPhone 5 design that popped up by way of a miniscule, pixelated icon in the latest Photostream beta? The boys over at 9to5Mac have blown it up into a larger mockup, and they reckon it might be the smaller, cheaper iPhone we’ve been hearing scuttlebutt about.

Apple must really not want iTunes Match to stream. Last night’s hasty release if iOS 5 Beta 7 seems to have been hastened to release specifically to change the way downloading songs from the iCloud takes place.
Apple has just released iOS 5 Beta 7 to registered developers. The latest beta build of iOS 5 can be downloaded in the iOS Dev Center.
We’ve shown you round one, two and three of the Cult of Mac Coolest Mac Setups gallery. Now, we’re back with another round of awesome setups that have been submitted. Enjoy round four!
Oh man, not again. In July, Apple lost yet another iPhone prototype in a San Francisco bar… this time, a testing prototype of the iPhone 5.
The latest version of Apple’s Photo Stream beta app has a new icon for “taking a photo with your iPhone”… one that appears to feature an iPhone 5 with a larger screen and elongated, capacitive home button. You know, just like all the rumors and cases have been suggesting.
Art gaffe, or can we just all take as read the look of the iPhone 5 now that icons for it are creeping into other products?
As part of the recent Newsweek cover story on Steve Jobs retirement and his legacy inside and outside of Apple, Cult of Mac was invited to contribute our own piece about how, more than anything else, Jobs’ true genius is in managing the creative process. Here’s what we came up with: the 10 Commandments of Steve,

If you’ve been waiting for Apple’s iPad 2 to be made available as discounted refurbished units through Apple’s online store, giddyup! They might not last long.
Apple iPhone users, eagerly awaiting the extra bandwidth from AT&T’s purchase of T-Mobile may have to tighten their belts. The U.S. Department of Justice Wednesday filed an antitrust lawsuit, blocking approval of the $39 billion deal on grounds it will “substantially lessen competition.”
Apple founder and recently retired CEO Steve Jobs has accumulated a personal fortune of $8.3 billion, but despite this, he is not known for his philanthropic contributions — at least, not publicly. According to the public record, he hasn’t given any money to charity in decades, and he reportedly declined to join Bill Gates’ and Warren E. Buffett’s Giving Pledge, a campaign to persuade the wealthiest to give away at least half their fortunes.
So is it time Jobs pulled a Bill Gates and start giving his money away?
Apple is reportedly working on a brand new new online diagnostics tool that could solve problems with your iOS device through your mobile Safari browser — saving you a trip to your local Apple store.
Remember that cool MacBook Pro with built-in 3G that one lucky surfer picked up on Craigslist? It got a lot of attention a couple weeks ago when it was listed on eBay, with bids in excess of $70,000. Unfortunately for its owner, Apple had the listing removed, and now it wants the machine back.
Apple released iTunes Match to registered developers last night, and many have been playing with the cloud service since then to figure out how it really works. We then showed you a video that demoed how Apple lets you “stream” music.
As it turns out, iTunes Match doesn’t actually ‘stream’ music in the purest sense of the word. Instead, Apple lets you download music on the fly, which basically means that you’re still locally storing songs on your device.
If you think the man in the picture above looks familiar, there’s a good reason. His name is Abdulfattah John Jandali. He’s the biological father of Steve Jobs who put him up for adoption over fifty years ago, and to this day, he hasn’t spoken on the phone with his son to tell him he’s proud of him.
Well, there goes the neighborhood. Zite — the personalized magazine for iPad — just got gobbled up by CNN.
What have Apple and erectile-dysfunction drug Viagra got in common? They are both wildly-popular and hot items on the Chinese counterfeiting circuit. Little wonder then, that the iPhone maker hired the head of drug-maker Pfizer security to root out fake smartphones and tablets in China.
For several weeks, rumors surrounding Apple’s iPhone announcement this fall have mentioned two devices: the iPhone 5, and the iPhone 4S. While we’re all expecting the iPhone 5 to look different, boast a thinner form factor, and have updated components; the iPhone 4S is expected to look just like the iPhone 4, but could be a cheaper ‘budget’ device.
The latest components sporting that famous ‘N94’ moniker seem to strengthen those claims of a budget iPhone 4.
Apple has temporarily closed down the iTunes Match beta to developers trying to access it for the first time after Apple launched their match-and-stream music service yesterday afternoon.
When Apple announced iTunes Match at WWDC back in June, it was a little unclear whether the service would allow you to stream your music library to your iOS devices as opposed to storing it locally — allowing you to access your tracks without actually taking up any of your precious storage space.
Following the launch of the iTunes Match developer beta yesterday, it has been confirmed that streaming is possible with Apple’s upcoming $25/year service.
It’s finally here — for U.S.-based developers, anyway. iTunes Match, Apple’s upcoming new service that takes your iTunes library and mirrors it in Apple’s cloud so it can be streamed has just dropped in Beta form.
Microsoft is in the process of developing Windows 8, and the Redmond giant has posted an analysis of what it’s calling “Improvements in Windows Explorer.” We’ll leave you to be the judge of the “improvements” made in Windows 8, but we couldn’t resist showing you Microsoft’s idea of a “streamlined” interface in the new Explorer.
