When Apple announced iTunes Match at WWDC back in June, it was a little unclear whether the service would allow you to stream your music library to your iOS devices as opposed to storing it locally — allowing you to access your tracks without actually taking up any of your precious storage space.
Following the launch of the iTunes Match developer beta yesterday, it has been confirmed that streaming is possible with Apple’s upcoming $25/year service.
If you’re unfamiliar with iTunes Match, it’s a new service that is part of iCloud and will launch alongside iOS 5 later this year. Apple describes the service as follows:
iTunes Match stores your complete music library in iCloud, allowing you to enjoy your collection anywhere, anytime, on any iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or computer.
If you sign up to the service at $25/year, iTunes Match will scan your entire music library (up to 25,000 songs) and then allow you to access it from any device linked to your iTunes account. So if you have Abba’s greatest collection on your Mac at home, but you forgot to sync it to your iPhone, you can still listen to it on the train by streaming it from Apple’s servers. Obviously you’ll need a data connection, but streaming music like this could save you a great deal of storage space on your device.
Insanely Great Mac has published a great walkthrough video of iTunes Match in action:

Streaming music is data intensive and the last thing I want to do is spend money on data plans on my mobile phone.
Exactly… I don’t get why everybody is so excited about streaming music/media. Sure, in theory it’s lovely, but networks and data plans aren’t up to it.
works ok with Spotify…you americans are behind the times !!!!
I think a useful option would be a “cache”. e.g. your 20 most played songs are kept in the cache cutting down on data. Mind u, data always gets cheaper, I mean how much is a decent size hard rive these days? Pretty soon everyone will be syncing their work/music/photos etc. with the cloud. I already do it with dropbox
I use audiogalaxy and it works great. My iphone storage amount no longer matters I have access to my entire library. This is why limited data plans are working against technology not helping to promote it. What we need is phone companies to offer better tiers of Data. There should be an unlimited plan but at a higher priced tier. I don’t mind paying a monthly fee for it. Just keep it within reason. I currently have an unlimited plan though and I don’t use a ton of data most of the time. Streaming music is mostly what i use it for, and there are some occasions where netflix is in use. These service means next to nothing if I know I have to pay for the service and then not be able to use it due to bandwidth restrictions. I am hoping that this helps push some phone makers into the service side. Apple changed the whole idea of smart phones but the phone companies tie them down maybe they can change how phone data is handled. Iphone and service from one new telecom Apple.
Is this assuming the US is the only place on earth?

What are you talking about? We have Spotify. We also have had equivalent services like Rdio that are arguably better than Spotify for a couple years.
And, why would I want to stream my music from the Cloud? Seriously? Why? Mobile carriers often charge for bandwidth used, and streaming music or video is a bandwidth hog. Many home ISPs are going to tiered pricing which means bandwidth is more expensive.
So, what’s the allure of streaming 25,000 songs?
sorry, it’s not streaming
