A handful of small but real changes are coming to Apple’s next budget iPhone, with iPhone 18e rumors pointing to a new chip and a RAM configuration nobody expected. None of it amounts to a redesign – this is still a budget phone, just slightly better.
The extra memory is the most interesting shift, but it comes with a catch. Most other specs, including the screen and camera, look set to carry over largely unchanged from the iPhone 17e. Here’s everything reported so far, and how solid each claim actually is.
iPhone 18e release date rumors break the tradition
Apple’s e-series phones were never meant to chase its flagship models. The iPhone 16e, which arrived in early 2025, delivered the essentials in a new and intriguing package — at a budget-friendly price point.
That’s why the iPhone 18e rumors matter less for their individual specs than for what they reveal about Apple’s strategy. The budget iPhone is evolving into a carefully calibrated gateway to the broader iPhone ecosystem. Rather than recycling years-old hardware, Apple appears to be giving the e-series just enough modern performance to stay relevant while preserving clear reasons for buyers to spend more on the standard, Air and Pro models.
Apple typically launches the e-series iPhones in the spring after unveiling its latest flagship lineup in the fall. The iPhone 18e will most likely follow that pattern, coming in March or April of 2027. The big change this time, though, is that it won’t trail the regular iPhone. Instead, Apple likely will launch it alongside the standard iPhone 18.
Previous rumors suggested Apple would split its iPhone releases for the first time during the upcoming launch cycle. The iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and the first foldable iPhone should arrive this September. The more affordable iPhone 18, the second-generation iPhone Air and the iPhone 18e would follow six months later.
iPhone 18e RAM and chip upgrades
Two analysts say the iPhone 18e will come with 9GB of RAM — just 1GB more than the current iPhone 17e. Ming-Chi Kuo of TF International Securities made the claim back in June, and Jeff Pu of GF Securities backed it up in late July.
Both also point to Apple’s upcoming A20 chip, which reportedly uses six 1.5GB memory dies instead of four 2GB ones, powering the iPhone 18e. That unusual layout, not a marketing choice, is what produces the odd 9GB total in these iPhone 18e rumors.
The extra memory doesn’t sound like much on paper, but it should allow iOS 27 to run Apple Intelligence features more smoothly. Still, it won’t be enough for everything. Apple’s most advanced on-device AI model requires 12GB of RAM to work. That model could power the most exciting iOS 27 features, such as the more expressive Siri and improved dictation.
“For products that support Apple’s most advanced on-device model ever, Siri AI offers even more expressive voices, as well as a major boost in accuracy with systemwide dictation,” Apple said when it announced Siri AI in June. “Users have the ability to customize the expressiveness and pace of Siri’s voice so it’s just right for them. Dictation now captures what users say as polished text with greater precision, automatically handling capitalization, punctuation, and formatting as they speak. With improved speech understanding, users can speak naturally and trust that their words will appear clearly, accurately, and as intended.”
If the 9GB rumor holds, both the iPhone 18e and the regular iPhone 18 might miss out on the high-end AI tricks. As for the A20 chip, rumors indicate the node could move to a 2nm manufacturing process. Compared to the current 3nm process, it should bring efficiency gains and modest speed improvements.
Display, camera and storage stay mostly familiar
Beyond RAM, most of the iPhone 18e’s hardware looks set to stay the same. Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station says the phone will retain the iPhone 17e’s 6.12-inch OLED screen at 60Hz. That means missing out on the ProMotion and Always-On features found elsewhere in Apple’s lineup. Some rumors indicate it might switch from the old-school notch to the Dynamic Island, but we’ve heard that one before.
Camera rumors point to a single 48MP rear sensor, likely built on the same Fusion camera hardware as the iPhone 17e. Storage options are expected to remain the same (either 256GB or 512GB).
iPhone 18e price hike likely incoming
While Macs and iPads recently became more expensive, Apple did not hike prices for the iPhone 17 series. But component costs — especially memory chips — have climbed quite sharply. That pressure makes a price hike for the iPhone 18e and other upcoming models probable, though no concrete numbers have leaked. Some outlets say the iPhone 18e will land in the $650 to $700 range. But you should treat those as early guesses rather than solid leaks.
None of these iPhone 18e rumors are set in stone, because Apple won’t confirm anything until the product’s ready to launch. Still, the pattern across multiple analysts and outlets is consistent enough to take seriously. The iPhone 18e looks like it’s getting a decent upgrade this generation, even if it’s still built for a budget.
