Apple Says It Will Only Pay $1 Per iPhone To License Motorola Patents

By

motorolavsapple

Apple’s legal battles have been quietly continuing in the U.S. even after their landmark $1 Billion win over Samsung a few months ago. Apple is currently trying to fight patent claims lobbied against it by Motorola Mobility which is now owned by Google.

With five days to go before their contract trial starts in Wisconsin, Apple formally declared to the court that it will be willing to pay a licensing fee to Motorola Mobility as long as the license is $1 or less per iPhone sold.

Amazon Pulls Anti-iPad Mini Comparison Ad From Their Homepage

By

amazonipadminiad

With the official launch of the iPad mini fast approaching this Friday, Amazon put an anti-iPad mini ad on their homepage praising the specs of the Kindle Fire HD against those found in the iPad mini.

The Kindle Fire HD is undoubtedly cheaper, and a good buy, but the move seemed a bit uncharacteristic of Amazon, who usually doesn’t engage in product comparisons. Amazon has since pulled the ad and it’s nowhere to be found on their website.

Siri’s Reaction To The News That Scott Forstall Is No Longer With Apple [Comic]

By

siricomicjoytech

Unaware of Scott Forstall’s recent exit from Apple, Siri will tell you that information on Forstall can be found on Apple.com, even though Apple already moved him from the Executive Profiles page.

Somebody’s got to break it to Siri that her buddy Scott is gone, and who better than Tim Cook, Jony Ive, and Phil Schiller. In their latest comic, Joy of Tech imagines what that awkward conversation with Siri would look like, head over there to see how she takes the news.

No One’s Told Siri Yet That Her Buddy Scott Forstall’s Been Fired [Image]

By

siriandscotty

Poor Siri. Her and Scott Forstall looked so happy together each time they hung out at the Apple keynotes, swapping jokes, answering questions and chatting. Now Scott’s kind of almost gone, but no one’s had the heart to break it to Siri that Mr. Forstall no longer plays a major role at Apple, and won’t be there to show off all her new designer threads at the iOS 7 keynote.

Each time you ask about Scotty, Siri tells you to just go look at Apple.com, like he totally works there and the info’s all there man. But yeah, it’s not.

Apple Stock Price Drops 2.4% In Reaction To Management Changes

By

Dominique Oh has been with Apple for just over 12 months.

Even though the news that Apple fired Scott Forstall and John Browett was released on Monday, investors didn’t have an opportunity to react to the new changes in management thanks the the stock markets being closed due to hurricane Sandy.

The markets opened today for the first time all week and investors showed that they’re not feeling incredibly optimistic about Apple right now. Apple’s stock price dropped about 2.4% and was trading at $589.60 this morning, which is the lowest price the stock has seen since July.

Google Search App Update Brings Better Voice Support To iOS

By

googlesearchapp

Google is still the champion when it comes to search, but their iOS app has lacked a lot of the neat features that you can use on Android. A big update to the Google Search app has fixed all that though and brought improved voice search capabilities to iOS.

The update is pretty significant for iPhone 5 users and can be downloaded free via the App Store. The biggest update to the app is that users can now can use natural language to control Google Search as well as listen to Google Search dictate the results of your query back to you.

The Ugliest Apple Product Ever Made [Image]

By

Despite its
Despite its "flower power" theme, the plastic used by early iMacs made them difficult to recycle.

Jony Ive and Steve Jobs made a lot of gorgeous Apple products together, but even they dropped a few duds. For proof, look no further than the image above: The Flower Power iMac.

Since it’s introduction in 1998, the first generation iMac received rave reviews for it’s beautiful design that featured a translucent plastic case. After a few years Apple starting getting crazy with the plastic casing and came up with the Flower Power version of the iMac and other variants. The Bondi Blue iMac was great, but the Flower Power iMac has to be Apple’s ugliest product of all-time.

Which Tech Company Should Hire Scott Forstall? [Let’s Talk]

By

Forstall
Will Apple regret saying goodbye to Scott Forstall?
Photo: Apple

Even though he was fired from Apple yesterday, Scott Forstall will still be an Apple employee until some point in 2013 and work as an advisor to Tim Cook. His new position is really just to prevent him from jumping ship quickly and going to another company, but Apple can’t keep him forever. At some point in 2013, Scott Forstall will be free to join any company he chooses. So which company should he go to?

Forstall’s brother works for Microsoft, but Scott’s penchant for skeuomorphic software might not fit well with Microsoft’s Metro UI. Google and Samsung are two other obvious choices because they’re big competitors with Apple. Or Forstall could choose to create his own company like Tony Fadell did with Nest after he left Apple. What company do you think would be the best fit for Scott?

Apple Has Already Removed Forstall And Browett’s Executive Profiles From Apple.com

By

executiveprofilesapple

The announcement that John Browett and Scott Forstall are leaving Apple by the end of the year just hit the Internet a few hours ago, but Apple has wasted no time updating their website to reflect the changes. On the “Executive Profiles” page of Apple.com the profiles for both Forstall and Browett have already been removed.

Most of Scott Forstall’s duties as Senior Vice President of iPhone Software have been divvied up among other Apple VPs. Apple is currently looking for a suitable replacement to takeover John Browett’s roles as the Senior Vice President of Retail Operations.

The announcement that both Scott Forstall and John Browett are leaving Apple today came as a big surprise to many Apple fans. Browett has only been with Apple for nine months, but Scott Forstall was one of Steve Jobs’ favorite employees and has been with Apple since 1997.

Apple hasn’t released any of the specifics as to why Browett and Forestall are leaving Apple, but we’re assuming they got fired for their missteps from the past 12 months.

Here’s why both of them may have been axed:

Apple’s Sandbagged The Entrance To 5th Avenue Apple Store [Image]

By

applestoresandy

The 5th Avenue Apple Store is one of New York City’s most iconic buildings. It’s also made out of glass. Really strong glass that will probably be able to survive hurricane Sandy’s damage, but the store is also located underground. To add more protection from flooding, Apple added sandbags to the entrance of the store just in case.

Hopefully they’ve added a few barriers below the entrance too, because hypothetically, if the glass facade of the Apple Store does come crashing down I’m betting it would be huge target for looters, especially if it were discovered that a huge stash of iPad minis are down there right now.

Anrgy Birds In Space didn’t do much to get me excited enough to fling birds around on my iPad, but Angry Birds Star Wars has rekindled my love for the cute slingshot loving birdies and their pig nemeses. Rovio just released gameplay footage of Angry Birds Star Wars (you can watch it in the video above), and yes, you will get to wield a lightsaber and shoot your blaster at AT-ATs once the game is released on November 8th.

Microsoft Surface Is Futuristic, But Apple Has Nothing To Worry About Yet [Opinion]

By

surfacedesktop

When Microsoft announced the Surface I was shocked. Not shocked because Balmer was doing something gutsy, but shocked because the Surface actually looks cool. Like, it’s probably the coolest looking tablet I’ve ever seen, other than the iPad, and if that crazy Touch Cover keyboard thing actually works well, then holy shit, the future is here.

Even though it’s not made by Apple, I had to try the “Surface with Windows RT” because I wanted to touch the future, and I really thought that maybe Microsoft was going to pull it off and create something that amazed me. After playing with the Surface and comparing it to an iPad though I found out that the future isn’t quite here yet, but it looks promising.

Surprise! There’s Apple-Like Lines For Microsoft’s New Tablet

By

surfacelinescotsdale2

I had a great idea this morning. I figured I’d head to the Microsoft Store in Scottsdale around 10am, waltz in, buy a Microsoft Surface, and then be out in 10 minutes. I assumed the store would be empty. I mean, come on, this is a Microsoft tablet we’re talking about, and who goes to the Microsoft Store anyway?

I was completely wrong. Microsoft’s new tablet, the Surface RT, may not do everything an iPad can, but it’s drawing some pretty big lines to Microsoft retail stores across the country for its launch this morning.

Apple Says New Super-Thin iMacs Will Be In Short Supply Once They’re Released

By

imacthinny

One of the biggest shockers at the iPad mini keynote was the announcement of the redesigned iMacs that are unbelievably thin. In our readers poll we were surprised that almost 50% of people were more excited about the iMac than the iPad mini. Unfortunately for all those people eager to get their hands on it, the new iMac will be in short supply when it launches.

During Apple’s financial results conference call this afternoon, Tim Cook was asked whether any Apple products will be facing any significant supply constraints over the next few months. Cook made sure to mention the iMac in particular and said that it will be “constrained in a significant way.”

Tim Cook: iPad Mini Margins Are Lower Than Any Other Apple Product

By

ipadminiismighty

During today’s conference call, Tim Cook commented on the price of the iPad mini and explained the the iPad mini has gross margins that are significantly below the corporate average. He didn’t say that Apple is selling the 7-inch tablet at a loss, but Apple definitely isn’t going to make as much profit off each iPad mini as they’re used to with other devices.

Earlier this morning a story from Digitimes claimed that the $329 price of the iPad mini is a result of mass production issues with the screen. Considering Cook’s statements on the margins of the iPad mini and Schiller’s comments that the iPad Mini is a premium product, the iPad Mini might be one of the most competitively priced Apple products we’ve seen in the last few years.

The History Of Apple’s Millions and Millions of Units Sold [Chart]

Apple just posted some of their financial data from Q4 and to the surprise of everyone, it was another record breaking quarter. Apple sold more iPods, iPads, iPhones, and Macs than they have during any other Q4 in their history.

The numbers aren’t earth shattering, but considering that Q4 is a transition quarter, the competition should be terrified of what Apple’s numbers are going to look like during the Holiday quarter (Q1 2013).
