New documentary explores the magic of augmented reality. Photo: Apple
Apple has debuted a new, free-to-watch documentary on Apple TV, directed by renowned photographer Ryan McGinley. Infinite Canvas follows “seven visionary artists as they push the boundaries of their work by exploring the uncharted territory of augmented reality art.”
The film is based on an AR[T] experimental art series that Apple staged last year at Apple Stores in San Francisco, New York, London, Paris, Hong Kong, and Tokyo.
Jason Sudeikas shoots! He scores! Photo: Apple TV+
Ted Lasso, the Apple TV+ comedy about a clueless American football coach who lands a job in Britain leading a team that plays that other kind of football, will come back for a second season, Apple said Wednesday.
Jason Sudeikas plays the lead in the show, which debuted on Apple TV+ last week. We’re only three episodes in to season 1, but so far, it looks like a winner. (Don’t take my word for it. Read the Cult of Mac review: Ted Lasso’s heart is too big to bench.)

Apple on Wednesday debuted the first trailer for On the Rocks, a new Apple TV+ movie that reunites Lost in Translation director Sofia Coppola with actor Bill Murray.
The movie will also star Rashida Jones and Marlon Wayans. It tells the story of a young mom in New York having doubts about her marriage, prior to going on an adventure with her dad.

You can get a real deal on CBS All Access and Showtime with an Apple TV+ subscription. Photo: Apple
Apple TV+ subscribers in the US can now also add a bundle of CBS All Access and Showtime for only $9.99 per month more. That’s less than half the usual price for these two streaming services.
Subscribers can watch content from all three services online and offline, ad-free and on demand, only on the Apple TV app.
Idris Elba is bringing his many talents to Apple TV+. Photo: BBC America
Idris Elba will star in a spy romance movie for Apple TV+, the company’s streaming video service. There was reportedly a bidding war over the picture, though what the Mac-maker paid for the rights is not known.

Apple has registered the website AppleOriginalProductions.com, underlining the company’s continuing push into Apple TV+ Originals.
Currently the web address does not go to any website. It could be an example of Apple defensively registering an address to stop others from using it. Alternatively, it could at some point be used to redirect to Apple TV+ or to a dedicated production company making shows for Apple.
Jason Sudeikis plays the titular host in Ted Lasso. Photo: Apple TV
Apple TV+ got plenty of fresh content Friday, with new episodes of two existing series, the first three episodes of a new show, and a feature-length documentary. Perfect for a weekend of viewing!
Comedy series Ted Lasso is the biggest launch. The show is about a hapless American football coach who travels to the UK to lead a soccer team. However, there are also new episodes of The Oprah Conversation and Little Voice. Plus the debut of Sundance documentary hit Boys State.
But signing Scorsese and other top filmmakers could turn out to be a shrewd and self-serving move that benefits Apple, too. Focusing on films crafted by the world’s top directors could differentiate the fledgling Apple TV+ from dominant rivals like Netflix. And it looks like Apple might be timing the market perfectly.
An animated series based Harriet the Spy is being produced for Apple TV+. Photo: Penguin Random House
Apple ordered an animated version of the children’s classic Harriet the Spy. It’ll star Golden Globe and SAG Award nominee Beanie Feldstein and Emmy winner Jane Lynch. The series will be produced by The Jim Henson Company.

Apple’s fall TV season will kick off with Tehran, a spy drama about a young Israeli agent trying to destroy an Iranian nuclear reactor. Apple revealed on Tuesday that the series will debut Friday, September 25 on Apple TV+.
Martin Scorsese is the latest star to land at Apple TV+. Photo: Thomas Hawk/Flickr CC
The next Goodfellas or Taxi Driver might be an Apple Original. Cupertino signed Martin Scorcese’s Sikelia Productions to a first-look deal that will see him direct and produce films and TV shows for Apple TV+.
It’s the latest high-profile pact signed by Apple execs as they seek to corner the market on the world’s most talented visual creators. The company continues to hustle, buying big-name properties and signing directors, actors, producers and other top Hollywood talent to exclusive deals.
Ben Feinstein appears in the terrifying Apple TV+ documentary Boys State. Photo: Apple TV+
If you looked at the crowds of white nationalists bearing tiki torches at the infamous Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, and wondered what took them from innocent children to gimlet-eyed monsters of borrowed ideology, Boys State is a harrowing but necessary research tool.
The new Apple TV+ documentary by Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss delivers a frightening look at a time-honored tradition that appears to have actively made the world a worse place.
Sundance Grand Jury Prize Winner Boys State, which premieres Friday on Apple TV+, may nauseate you. But you’ll be glad you saw it, if only because it’s a shocking and sobering reminder that the next generation of conservatives is ready to step in and replace the one about to die — and they’re no less efficacious.

It’s Friday — which, among other things, means new shows going live on Apple TV+. This week, Apple has posted one new episode each of current series Little Voice and The Oprah Conversation.
Robert Downey Jr.’s production company created a crime drama for Apple TV+. Photo: Team Downey
A detective drama from Robert Downey Jr.’s production company is reportedly headed to Apple TV+. The series centers on a down-at-the-heels cop trying to solve a decades-old cold case.
Downey, best known for playing Iron Man in numerous Marvel movies, might take a role in the show.
Jason Sudeikis is the titular Ted Lasso in the mostly winning comedy series. Photo: Apple TV
Created for a diverting if not particularly funny web short, Jason Sudeikis‘ clueless coach Ted Lasso now has his own Apple TV+ series. The question is: Is there enough meat on the bones of the premise to support a comedy series?
Like the NBC Sports promos that spawned the character, Ted Lasso is about an American coaching football in England — and being sorta kinda unfit for the demands. Fish-out-of-water, culture-clash comedies are as old as film comedy itself. And there’s certainly potential in the idea of an old-fashioned Southern gentleman dropped into tough-as-nails, hyper-masculine soccer culture. But ultimately, the high-concept stuff isn’t what works in Ted Lasso’s favor. You must get past the show’s premise to get to the good part.
Films or TV shows from Leonardo DiCaprio‘s Appian Way production company could be headed for Apple TV+. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
Leonardo DiCaprio is the latest Hollywood star teaming up with Apple. His production company Appian Way reportedly signed a first-look deal with the iPhone maker.
This means the Apple TV+ streaming service gets the right of first refusal for all projects DiCaprio and co. dream up.

Ewan McGregor and his buddy Charley Boorman took a little motorcycle ride — a mere 13,000 miles over 100 days. They went through 16 border crossings and 13 countries, starting from the city of Ushuaia at the tip of South America.
Their epic journey is the subject of Long Way Up, a series that launches on Apple TV+ in September.
Apple Originals are free to view on flights. Well, free aside from the cost of actually flying that is! Photo: Apple

The agreement, which started this month, means American’s seat-back entertainment systems come preloaded with Apple Originals. These include The Morning Show, For All Mankind, Dickinson, Defending Jacob and seven more.

Friday is "new shows" day on Apple TV+! Photo: Apple
Apple TV+ today released the latest episode of its series Little Voice.
Producer J.J. Abrams’ series, created with songwriter Sara Bareilles and writer Jessie Nelson, is about aspiring singer Bess King and her attempts to forge a path for herself as a singer.
Alongside the new episode, Apple TV+ also has the first two episodes of Oprah’s new show The Oprah Conversation.
Season one also had to be rewritten at the last moment. Photo: Apple
For the second time, a season of The Morning Show is having to be completely rewritten to reflect sweeping global changes.
The Apple TV+ show had to be virtually rebooted prior to the filming of Season 1 due to the #MeToo movement and the firing of TV host Matt Lauer as the result of sexual impropriety accusations. Now Deadline reveals that Season 2 is also being rewritten — this time to reflect the COVID-19 pandemic.
Both Jennifer Aniston and Steve Carell received Emmy nominations for their work on Apple TV+’s The Morning Show. Photo: Apple
Apple TV+ earned 19 Emmy Awards nominations, including several for The Morning Show, a star-studded drama that was a highlight of the streaming service’s launch last autumn.
That’s not bad for the first year of eligibility for Apple TV+. However, Netflix totally dominated the 72nd annual Emmy Awards nominations, which were revealed Tuesday by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The world’s biggest streamer took home an astonishing 160 Emmy noms. HBO limited series Watchmen scored the most nominations of any single series with 26.
