Oh, Apple. Wasn’t it enough that you subjected us to John Mayer and Coldplay for years? I mean, yeah sure, I guess both of those artists were kind of cool for about 15 minutes, but they weren’t “cool” or “hip” when they played at an Apple keynote, and now instead of making progress with keynote live performances you give us the Foo Fighters?

Don’t get me wrong, I love Dave Grohl. The feisty Nirvana Dave Grohl, who talked shit to Axl Rose and had a wild and unruly nature about him. He was awesome back then. Apple-esque even, in that rebellious sort of way that, even though they’re the biggest tech company in the world, Apple still likes to cast themselves as the rebel going against the mainstream. But having the Foo Fighters play at an Apple event now seems contradictory to Apple’s entire hip and cool image that makes people lust after iPhones and iPads.

Apple has made the final GM version of iOS 6 available to registered developers. The release comes after Apple announced that iOS 6 will be made available as a free public download next Wednesday, September 19th.

The Xcode 4.5 GM has also been seeded in the Dev Center. All iOS developers can start downloading the iOS 6 GM and new version of Xcode now. The version of iOS 6 that ships next week will be the exact same as the GM that Apple just released.

Today, Apple made official the eagerly-awaited latest version of the world’s most popular smartphone, the iPhone 5. Apple has historically been a trendsetter when it comes to building smartphones, using cutting-edge technology and top-of-the-line materials, but over the past few months, the competition — Samsung, Motorola, Nokia and HTC — have started catching up.

So, spec-by-spec, how does the iPhone 5 stack up? Following the iPhone 5, Apple’s Eddy Cue announced the next version of iTunes. The new iTunes borrows heavily from the mobile iOS experience, and iCloud integration is pervasive through the new interface. Search and playlist creation has been improved, along with general interface elements throughout the app’s design. It all looks a lot like the Music app in iOS.

Artists are now able to share photos in users’ iTunes libraries alongside tracks, and there’s plenty of new ways of interacting with your music and the iTunes Store. There’s a sexy new mini-player that can sit on your desktop, which is a particularly nice addition.

The iTunes Store itself has been updated to look more like the iOS 6 interface, and iCloud can be used to download and keep content in sync between devices. Following the onstage demo, Eddy Cue announced that the new iTunes is coming in October.

Apple has announced the official pricing and availability details for the iPhone 5. Keeping in line with previous releases, the base 16GB model will be offered with a two-year carrier contract fro $199. The 32GB model will cost $299 and the 64GB will cost $399. Like always, the iPhone 5 will be available in black and white.

Pre-orders for the iPhone 5 start on Friday, September 14th. The iPhone 5 will ship on Friday, September 21st, according to Apple.

The iPhone 3GS has finally been discontinued, and the iPhone 4 has replaced it as Apple’s free phone with a two-year contract. The 16GB iPhone 4S now sells for $99.

Tim Cook and the gang at Apple were in full force at yesterday’s keynote. Yes, the iPhone 5 was announced, but there was so much more than that. EarPods, Lighting, crazy new iSight cameras, iTunes, and much more.

Apple is going to unveil the iPhone 5 with LTE, the new iPod touch, new iPod nano, and a new version of iTunes today. How do we know, you ask? Because Apple’s own search engine just leaked all of it.

You don’t need to watch the Apple keynote — you already know there’s a new iPhone coming, it’ll be called the “iPhone 5,” and will be accompanied by a new iPod touch and a new version of iTunes. You also know now that the device will be packing an A6 processor and LTE connectivity, thanks to the latest pictures of its logic board.

We thought we’d had it all figured out.

When Apple bucked the trend of numerically naming the iPad by calling the Retina iPad the “new iPad” instead of the iPad 3, we thought it was a sure thing that they’d do the same thing for the next iPhone. The next iPhone, then, would be “the new iPhone” or the “2012 iPhone”, not the iPhone 5.

It made total sense, in a way: Apple doesn’t add a numeral to the end of its other products, like the MacBook Pro or the iPod Classic. They don’t even do it for the iPod touch, which is basically the most current iPod with all the phone guts stripped out. Why continue setting apart the iPhone as a sequel to the handsets that have come before when you can position it, not as an incremental update, but a timeless product in its own right: the Mercedes of smartphones?

That’s the way Apple handles the rest of its products, but with the invitation for today’s, and now Apple accidentally spilling the official name of the next iPhone on their website, it now seems clear that Apple is going to call the sixth-generation iPhone the ‘iPhone 5’ after all. Why would they do that?

Apple isn’t a company known for silly blunders, but its website is revealing a host of unreleased products today. As we reported just moments ago, the Cupertino company already has links to its iPhone 5 and new iPod touch press releases set up, which can be found by searching for the devices on its website. But that’s not all: a “new iTunes” has also been discovered.

In case there was any doubt, Apple has just accidentally confirmed the next iPhone will indeed be called the iPhone 5, as a search inputted into the official Apple.com website looking for “iPhone 5” calls up (non-functioning) results for an upcoming “Apple Introduces iPhone 5” press release.

Apple will launch the next iPhone (presumably named the iPhone 5) along with iOS 6 tomorrow. The new iPhone is expected to pack a range of updates that will make it a much more significant release than last year’s iPhone 4S. The biggest expectation is that the iPhone will include 4G LTE support and that, unlike the new iPad, it will support LTE bands used outside of North America.
