Apple Reiterates Commitment To Good Products, Says More Are Coming This Fall

By

Given how secretive Apple is,
Given how secretive Apple is, "new products" is about as specific as its executives are going to get.

Apple’s third quarter earnings call didn’t produce many interesting comments from the company’s executives, but CFO Peter Oppenheimer and CEO Tim Cook did mention new products coming in the fall. But then again, Apple has been beating the same “stuff is coming” drum all year.

When asked a philosophical question about how Apple operates, Cook reiterated the company’s mantra on manufacturing quality gear.

Record iPhone sales helped Apple beat Wall Street estimates for 2013’s third fiscal quarter, but the company’s profits declined and its earnings barely rose, dragged down by slumping sales of other products. Still, investors liked what they heard, with Apple stock rising in after-hours trading following the news.

Apple reported revenue of $35.3 billion and a net profit of $6.9 billion, or $7.47 per diluted share, for Q3 2013. The revenue surpassed Wall Street’s consensus of $35.18 billion; the company’s own prediction for the quarter had been $33.5 billion to $35.5 billion.

In the sphere of Apple, most analysts are generally full of it. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is one of the exceptions; when he says something’s happening, there’s a pretty good chance it actually is.

Now, Kuo’s supply chain checks have indicated that the end of the year might be a rough one for Apple: not only is Kuo not anticipating a new iPad mini this year, but he’s forecasting serious supply issues at the launch of the iPhone 5S.

Since Apple launched the iPhone in 2007, smartphones have really taken off , and more than 1 billion people worldwide now own one. Last year alone, smartphones generated $293.9 billion in sales, but the cost of the average smartphone has begun falling.

More than half of cellphone owners in the U.S. and other developed markets already own a smartphone, and those in emerging markets such as China and India aren’t able to pay for high-end devices like the iPhone. As a result, cheaper options are becoming increasingly popular.

iOS 7 & OS X Mavericks Betas Could Be Delayed By Dev Center Hack

By

iOS-7-Messages-004

Just a friendly note. Apple has so far been releasing new betas of iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks every other Monday, like clockwork. But with the iTunes Developer Center, down for almost four days now (because of a hack that might have been committed by a researcher) and no end in sight, if you’re expecting iOS 7 Beta 4 and OS X Mavericks Beta 4 to drop today, you might not want to hold your breath: if Apple can’t get the Developer Center up and running this afternoon, releasing a new beta isn’t likely.

Apple’s Dev Center mysteriously went down for several days last week, and the Cupertino company revealed over the weekend that “an intruder attempted to secure personal information of our registered developers.” The site was closed immediately so that the potential for further threats could be eliminated.

It looked like Apple’s website had been hacked by someone trying to obtain our personal data, but according to one security researcher, it was his discovery of 13 bugs in the system which prompted the company to take action.

After days of being down, Apple has explained why its Developer Center is unavailable. The above message is being emailed out to registered developers and the press, revealing that the developer site was targeted by a hacker earlier this week.

Apple is saying there’s no evidence personal data was stolen, but the hack was serious enough to warrant a complete shutdown and internal restructuring of the site’s database.

Apple’s Developer Center Has Been Down For Nearly 2 Days And Nobody Knows Why [Updated]

Apple’s Developer Center is where it keeps the documentation and resources third-party developers need to make their apps. If a registered developer needs to download the latest iOS or OS X build, they go to the Dev Center. It’s an invaluable resource Apple provides for $100 per year to each person in its developer program.

When the Dev Center goes down for maintenance, it usually only lasts for a few minutes. But for some unknown reason, the Dev Center has been down for well over 24 hours. Developers are scratching their heads on Twitter, and Apple hasn’t said anything.

Leaked Budget iPhone Rear Shell Gets Compared To iPhone 5 In New Photos

By

The rumor mill has provided a steady supply of pictures of the alleged lower-cost iPhone that Apple is rumored to release later this year, but now we have some comparison shots of what the rear shell looks like compared to the iPhone 5.

Weekly ASCII in Japan got their hands on what they claim is the rear shell for the budget iPhone. While we can’t verify the authenticity of the case, it’s very similar to the other leaked photos of the budget iPhone rear shell we’ve seen and the screw hole layout is similar to the iPhone 5s logic boards that leaked earlier this week.

The mag says that they  saw casings in pink, blue, orange, black, and white as well.  Here are some close-up comparisons between the two iPhones:

There’s a lot of smoke suggesting a fire coming our way. We’ve seen countless leaks, rumors and reports that say Apple will release a budget iPhone Lite in September: a plastic-bodied mid-range phone which Apple will be able to offer for $0 on contract, making a dent in the mid-range market.

We’re pretty sure the iPhone Lite is a real product at this point. But according to a new report, there might not be just one iPhone Lite. There could be two.

Was iOS 7’s Lock Screen Redesigned For The iPhone 5S’s Fingerprint Sensor?

By

Here’s an interesting patent. While hype and rumor has suggested that when Apple introduces a fingerprint sensor in the iPhone 5S, it’ll be placed under the home button, Apple’s actually patented something much different: technology that would allow an iPhone to detect your fingerprint just by pressing your finger against the screen.

This makes a lot of sense. Not only is it a more elegant place to put a fingerprint sensor — and Apple loves elegance — but it explains the redesigned iOS 7 lock screen, and the way ‘Slide to Unlock’ has been de-emphasized. We’ll see!
