Just this week DigiTimes reported that the iPad mini with Retina display wouldn’t be available until 2014 due to supply constraints, but its “industry sources” appear to have changed their minds. The Korean outlet now reports that the device will launch this October instead.
“LG is reportedly making new headway in producing Retina panel technology for use in the next-generation iPad mini, and expects to ship about 2-3 million units a month in preparation for Apple’s expected October release date,” DigiTimes reports today.
That’s quite a turnaround in just a few days, and we only hope that the latest claims are more accurate than the last; we really don’t want to have to wait until next year to get a Retina display on the iPad mini. But it does seem unlikely that Apple would keep us waiting that long.
As for the fifth-generation iPad, DigiTimes claims that LG Display will ship 2.5-3 million 9.7-inch panels for the device during the third quarter of this year, ready for its launch this fall.
The device will reportedly maintain its existing 2048×1536 resolution, but it is expected to become thinner and lighter, with a modified backlight that should improve battery life.
