The standard iPhone 18 may finally close the gap with its pricier Pro siblings. New supply chain research suggests a jump in iPhone 18 RAM. A smaller Dynamic Island, once tipped only for Pro models, could be on the way as well.
Both upgrades would put the base iPhone 18 closer to Apple’s premium lineup. The changes are still unconfirmed, and one prominent analyst disagrees on the memory number.

iPhone 18 could get 12GB RAM
Apple has a long history of introducing its most advanced iPhone features in the Pro models before bringing them to the standard lineup. That strategy gives the Pro models a period of exclusivity while allowing Apple to gradually expand popular upgrades to more affordable iPhones.
Features such as the Dynamic Island and other display and camera improvements followed this path, for example. And now it’s apparently about to happen again with the iPhone 18 series.
The base iPhone 18 is tipped to get 12GB of RAM, up from 8GB on the iPhone 17. That number was suggested by GF Securities analyst Jeff Pu in a new research note. If true, it would mean the base iPhone 18 would match the memory found in the current iPhone 17 Pro models.
More RAM matters because Apple Intelligence features lean heavily on on-device processing. A bigger memory pool gives the phone more room to run local AI models without slowing down. It also helps with everyday multitasking, a perk usually reserved for Pro models.
Pu isn’t alone in this prediction. Analyst Dan Nystedt made the same 12GB claim back in April, based on separate supply chain leaks. Their combined estimate suggests Apple is planning a bigger year-over-year memory bump than usual for the standard model.
But not everyone agrees. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims both the iPhone 18 and the more affordable iPhone 18e will top out at 9GB. If Kuo is right, it could potentially mean the standard model could miss out on some Apple Intelligence features.
The two camps remain split, and only Apple’s official announcement will settle it.
Pu does agree with Kuo on one point, though. Both analysts say the iPhone 18e will have 9GB of RAM. That’s despite sharing the upcoming A20 chip as the standard iPhone 18. This would preserve a clear performance gap between Apple’s two entry-level iPhones.
A slimmer Dynamic Island is also on the list
The second base-model iPhone 18 upgrade rumor concerns the Dynamic Island — Pu believes the standard iPhone 18 will have a smaller one. Previously, that was rumored to be reserved for this year’s Pro models. Until now, most leaks suggested the Dynamic Island redesign would stay exclusive to the Pro tier for at least one generation.
Leaker Ice Universe also made a similar claim in the past. According to him, the smaller pill-shaped Dynamic Island will come to the entire iPhone 18 lineup, not just Pro hardware.
A shrunken Dynamic Island would free up space at the top of the display for more information.
Apple usually takes a lot more time to bring Dynamic Island upgrades to its cheaper models. The original Dynamic Island made its debut on the iPhone 14 Pro, but didn’t reach the standard model until a year later with the iPhone 15. If Pu is correct, Apple would move faster this time around.
What iPhone 18 RAM rumors mean for buyers
The base iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e aren’t expected until spring 2027 — Apple’s September launch event will allegedly be reserved for the Pro models and the folding iPhone. When they launch next year, both more affordable phones are rumored to run on Apple’s A20 chip built on a 2nm process for better speed and efficiency.
For now, all of this rests on analyst notes and supply chain leaks rather than anything from Apple itself. Expect clarity as the iPhone 18 Pro launch approaches next, with more leaks likely to follow.
