iPhone 18 Pro could get a major performance boost from A20 chip

Apple’s A20 Pro chip is shaping up to be a big leap forward. A new leak points to a significant jump in speed with a considerable cut in power use. This is the best look yet at the performance of a processor that will be critical to the success of Apple new flagship smartphones.

Built on TSMC’s 2-nm process, the chip is expected to make its debut in the iPhone 18 Pro lineup this fall. The upgrade should mean serious performance and battery gains, but it likely won’t come cheap.

A20 Pro chip promises a generational leap in speed and efficiency

Apple designs the A-series chips that power its iPhones, giving the company tight control over both performance and power efficiency. TSMC then manufactures the chips using its advanced semiconductor processes. With each new generation, Apple typically finds ways to make its silicon faster and more efficient, but the A20 is expected to deliver an unusually large leap.

The A20 chip performance claims come from the Weibo-based leaker Fixed Focus Digital. In a post, the leaker pointed to an 18% performance gain. He also cited a 30% improvement in power efficiency compared to the A19 Pro.

“According to supply chain feedback, the highlights of the 2nm process include: performance improvement of 18%± and power consumption reduction of 30%±,” wrote Fixed Focus Digital according to a machine translation.

But those numbers aren’t final, as Apple usually breaks its performance claims down by CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine gains. This means the real-world picture could look different once the company unveils the chip at its September event.

Made with new chip manufacturing techniques 

The 2-nm shrink also brings a new transistor design called Gate-All-Around (GAA). This wraps gate material around all four sides of the transistor. It should translate to less wasted power and better battery life.

The direction also lines up with previous rumors about the A20 Pro’s manufacturing process. Moving to a 2-nm node is a huge step up from the 3-nm process used for the A19 Pro. Usually, die shrinks like this bring both speed and efficiency gains. The GAA architecture adds another layer of improvement on top of that.

The A20 Pro is expected to power the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Apple’s first foldable. It should also land in Apple’s first foldable — iPhone Ultra. This will pair with iOS 27, which also brings its own speed gains. Together, the hardware and software upgrades could make this fall’s iPhones feel notably snappier, at least on paper.

Faster chips, higher prices

But the A20 chip’s performance gains could come with a real cost… literally. Previous reports pegged Apple’s per-chip cost for the A20 at almost $280. That would be about 80% higher than what Apple paid for the A19. The new leak lines up with that earlier claim.

The chip isn’t the only factor pushing prices up. Apple is also dealing with an industry-wide memory shortage, which has driven up the cost of RAM and storage components. Between the pricier chips and the memory crunch, industry watchers expect the iPhone 18 Pro series to cost $250 to $300 more than the iPhone 17 Pro series.

None of this is set in stone yet. Apple hasn’t confirmed pricing, chip specs, or a launch date. Leaks about unreleased silicon can still shift before launch.

But if these numbers hold, the A20 Pro chip could mark one of the biggest performance jumps in recent iPhone history. And buyers may just end up paying more for it.
