Apple: We Know It’s Easy To Steal Our New Mac Apps, But We Hope You Won’t

By

iWork

While Apple’s iLife and iWork software suites are considerably cheaper than competing products from rival companies, there’s still a bunch of people who would rather download them illegally than have to fork out the $20 fee for each app. And believe it or not, those who do will get a free upgrade to the latest versions direct from Apple.

When the Cupertino company pushed out its latest OS X apps following the iPad event earlier this week, anyone who had already installed the apps on their Mac was entitled to the latest version for free — even if the were using trial software, or they had downloaded the apps illegally.

Apple knows this, and it says it wasn’t just a bug. It also accepts that it’s easy to pirate its software — but it would rather trust you not to than implement some cumbersome anti-piracy feature.

Good luck getting one of these before Christmas.

If you’re hoping to get your hands on the new iPad mini with Retina display next month, then you’ll want to be one of the first in line at the Apple store when it goes on sale. According to one tablet industry expert, supply of the new device will be “ridiculously tight” at launch, likely leading to long delays for those who aren’t lucky enough to bag one on day one.

How The iPad Mini Stacks Up Against The Competition [Chart]

By

iPAdmini

Apple unveiled the new iPad mini with Retina display yesterday along side the iPad Air, and while we were expecting a bump up in resolution, we also got some nice internal hardware upgrades in the form of the A7 processor, M7 co-processor, improved cameras and faster WiFi.

We still think the iPad mini is the best 7-inch tablet on the market but the number of competitive Android tablets keeps growing every year, each with their own set of compelling features and ecosystems. To sort out whether the iPad mini really is the best purchase for you, check out the chart above that breaks down the iPad mini’s specs compared the Kindle Fire lineup, Nexus 7 II and the Galaxy Tab 3.

When Copyright Gets In The Way, Morning Becomes Midnight

This name change brought to you by the letter
This name change brought to you by the letter "M."

We’ve been trumpeting the tale of a fantastic game in development from the all-star team at Industrial Toys for a while now. Titled Morning Star, it had some serious pedigree and promise.

A sci-fi themed first-person shooter from Alex Seropian, the dude that co-created Bungie (Marathon, Halo) is huge news in the first place. A game that includes author John Scalzi and artist Mike Choi among many other hugely talented folks that will launch exclusively on mobile? That’s ginormous news.

Color us fascinated when President Tim Harris penned a blog post on gaming site Gamasutra about why the team had to rename the game, and how they went about it. It’s a super interesting behind-the-scenes look at the very real business side of game development, and it’s worth a look.

Woz Is Unimpressed By Apple’s New iPads

By

IMG_4999

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak says he’s not interested in Apple’s new iPads because the neither model meets his needs. Woz didn’t get a chance to watch the keynote live because he was on a plane, but he caught up with the news when he landed and then emailed his wife to say, “nope, I don’t want one of those.”

Refurbished iPad Minis Now Start At $249, 4th-Gen iPads At $379

By

Screen Shot 2013-10-23 at 8.05.42 AM

One of the most common criticisms you hear of Apple’s iPad line is that they are expensive compared to the competition. When the iPad mini first came out, for example, it was widely criticized for its entry-level price of $329, with many saying it couldn’t succeed unless it was under $249.

Obviously, such predictions were laughably wrong. But Apple is now selling a $249 iPad mini: a refurbished one!

Apple Updates Find My iPhone, Podcasts And Movie Trailers App With All-New Designs For iOS 7

By

findmyiPhone

The redesign of Apple’s iWork and iLife apps received all the attention at today’s keynote, but Apple isn’t totally neglecting some of its lesser-used apps. Apple released an update for Find My iPhone this afternoon that brings a redesigned interface to the security app to bring it inline with iOS 7’s UI.

Find My iPhone allows users who misplace their iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch or Mac to use another iOS data to find the lost device and protect your data. The redesign seems to be purely aesthetic as all of the core feature remain relatively unchanged. Users can still remotely lock devices, wipe data, view battery charge, and even get driving directions to a lost device.

The free update is available in the App Store now.

Update: Looks like Podcasts and Movie Trailers have also been updated with new iOS 7 UIs.

Which iPad Is More Lustworthy, The iPad Air Or iPad Mini With Retina Display? [Poll]

By

cult_logo_featured_image_missing_default1920x1080

[polldaddy poll=7498607]

Now that the wraps have officially come off the new iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina display, the only thing left to do is scrutinize the hell out of them before deciding which one to buy. Apple’s never given customers as many tablet options as they have today, so our question is – Which iPad do you want the most?

The iPad mini now has the same A7 chip as the iPad Air making it just as good for gaming, plus it’s smaller and cheaper. But then there’s the iPad Air with its anorexic frame, featherweight features, and big screen which makes it the ultimate tablet. Of course you could always go the cheaper route now that the iPad mini and iPad 2 prices have been cut, making for one tough decision for iPad lovers.

We want to hear what you guys think of the new iPads, so vote in our poll above and drop us a comment explaining why you think your iPad of choice is a better purchase than Apple’s other offerings.

The New iPad Mini Is (Finally) A Great Gaming Device [Opinion]

By

iPad mini with Retina

The iPad mini, announced today, is suddenly a fantastic gaming device. While the original iPad mini introduced a fantastic iPad form factor at 7.9 inches, the iPad 2-equivalent display and CPU just doesn’t quite cut it for higher-end gaming apps.

Of course, all of Apple’s iOS devices have been great for gaming ever since the App Store launched back in 2008. Games make up a huge portion of the 1,000,000 apps out there to date, and it’s not surprising anymore to see console-level gaming experiences show up on both iPad and iPhone.

For best results, Apple recommends watching the video in Safari. You can also watch it on your Apple TV from the Apple Events app.

Everything Apple Announced At Today’s iPad Event

By

Tim Cook iPad Event

Apple CEO Tim Cook took the stage today at San Francisco’s Moscone Center to kick off the special keynote event that we’ve dubbed here as the iPad Event.

Cook began his presentation with some numbers, including the nine million new iPhone 5s and 5c models that were sold over the first weekend of availability. Cook called it the biggest iPhone launch, ever, and showed a video to underline his point.

Check Out These Android Bots Trying To Crash The iPad Event

By

BXMeE68CcAAm04k

We’re less that 30 minutes away from the official unveiling of the iPad 5, iPad mini 2 and whatever other goodies Tim Cook and the gang have instore for us. The press are just about to be let in but it looks like some Android fanboys are trying to crash the party in their Android Bot costumes.

No idea if they’re from Google or just some happy fans doing some Android proselytizing for fun. Good luck getting in.

Spotify Finally Updated For iOS 7

By

Spotify-iOS-7
Great track. Awesome playlist.

The Spotify app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch has finally been updated to support iOS 7. There are some subtle interface changes that better fit iOS 7’s new design guidelines, but it’s not quite the overhaul you may have been expecting.

Apple Will Live Stream Today’s iPad Event

By

Apple-TV-special-event-Oct-2013

The next best thing to actually being at an Apple press event is being able to watch the whole thing live from the comfort of your own living room. Unfortunately, the Cupertino company doesn’t live stream every event to the public, but you’ll be pleased to know it will be showing today’s iPad event.

Fall Asleep To Music With Your iPhone’s Hidden Sleep Timer [iOS Tips]

By

IMG_0534

Whether this feature has been in iOS since the beginning or not, this is the first I’ve heard of it, so I’m guessing there are a few of you out there that haven’t found the sleep timer in iOS, either.

If you want to listen to music or audiobooks before you go to sleep, it’s generally a good idea to have a way to turn the music off after you’ve fallen asleep, right?

Well, it turns out that there’s a sleep timer right in iOS itself, but it might not be where you’d expect it to be.

By

lumia2520_large_verge_medium_landscape

Apple isn’t the only consumer electronics giant hosting a major press event tomorrow. Nokia is also gearing up to make a number of big announcements at Nokia World in Abu Dhabi, and they won’t all be new Lumia smartphones.

The Finnish firm is also expected to unveil a Windows-powered iPad competitor with a 10.1-inch 1080p display — pictured above and below — and a new music player called the “Nokia Guru” that hopes to take on the iPod shuffle.

Samsung looks to be preparing its own extended warranty plans that will provide additional coverage for its smartphones, tablets, and other consumer electronics, according to a new trademark registered with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.

Called “Protection Plus,” the service is expected to offer the same kind of protection that is available to iPhone, iPad, and iPod users with AppleCare+.
