Apple’s plan to put sapphire glass in everything took a tumble this week when its exclusive supplier GT Advanced Technologies filed for bankruptcy, and according to Apple’s spokesman, they were just as shocked as all of us.
In a statement issued this morning to Reuters, the Apple spokesman Chris Gaither said the company was ‘surprised’ by GT’s decision to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, but they haven’t given up on its AZ plant yet.

Apple isn’t quite done rolling out its new products for 2014, as the company just sent out invites to a special Town Hall event being held on its Cupertino campus on October 16th at 10AM PT.
The event comes just weeks after the iPhone 6 and Apple Watch were revealed, but the invites provide few clues about what they’re going to announce yet. The iPad Air is expected to get an update, and the rumor mill has spit out claims of a Retina iMac making an appearance too.
OS X Yosemite will also be introduced publicly at the event, and we could even see a new Mac Mini or some other goodies. All will be revealed soon when Tim Cook and the gang take the stage next Thursday. Cult of Mac will be liveblogging the event so stay tuned.
iPad Air 2 dummy unit reveals Apple's plan to ditch the mute switch Photo: Zing
Apple is expected to announce its new iPad lineup at an event next week, but manufacturers in Vietnam have leaked a hands-ons on video of a high-quality iPad Air 2 dummy unit, that reveals all the subtle design tweaks coming to the world’s most popular tablet.
One of the biggest changes is addition of Touch ID as well as the disappearance of the the mute-switch, which has been completely removed from the left side of the iPad Air 2, while the volume buttons are a bit more recessed.
Check out the hands-on video below to see some of the other changes:
OS X Yosemite is almost ready for public release. Photo: Apple
Apple has seeded a second Gold Master candidate of OS X Yosemite to developers this afternoon, following the release of iOS 8.1 beta 2 earlier this morning.
OS X 10.10 Yosemite GM Candidate 2 is now available in the Mac Dev Center and the Mac App Store to members of Apple’s developer program. Xcode 6.1 GM seed 2 was also released this morning, along with an Apple TV Software beta update.
A Motor City resident would rather own an iPhone 6 than a house. Video still: Fox 2 News
If you’ve always wanted to own a dilapidated bungalow on Detroit’s East Side, but all you have is an iPhone 6, today is your lucky day: A Motor City homeowner is so desperate to get rid of his house that he’ll trade it to you for an iPhone 6.
Just about everything in the brick colonial listed for sale needs to be demolished, but the house does feature a basement, garden and city views from the second-floor balcony. The seller of the house lives overseas, and after failing to sell the home for months, he’d gladly accept the greatest smartphone on Earth as payment for his nearly worthless property.
Take a look of the 3-bedroom, 1.5-bath residence below:
Facebook has drawn criticism for its mandated use of real names on its social network, but to satisfy demands of anonymity – and take on Snapchat – the New York Times reports that the company plans to release a stand-alone app that lets you chat without using your real name.

Apple has seeded the second beta of 8.1 to developers today, ahead of its rumored public release later this month. A new beta build of Xcode 6.1 has also been released on the iOS Dev Center, along with Apple TV software beta 2 that includes support for Family Sharing and can be used to test AirPlay and HomeKit in iOS apps.
Apple’s release notes for iOS 8.1 beta 2 don’t mention the addition of new feature – though Apple Pay was discover in the last build – but it does list a number of bug fixes.
We’ll let you know what type of new goodies we find once we get it install on our devices. The new beta can be download from the iOS Developer Center or via the direct download links below.
Siri's so distractive, AAA had to make a fourth category for it. Photo: AAA
Three out of four drivers in America believe that using hands-free technology like Siri is a safer way to cruise the highway than fiddling with buttons and knobs, but a surprising study from AAA found that using Siri on the road is actually dangerously distracting.
The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety tested the distraction levels of a number of hands-free solutions from auto-manufacturers that allow drivers to compose messages, change the radio, and navigate complex menus with voice commands, and found that trying to chat with Siri while driving is more distracting that composing a text.
Popcorn Time for iOS can now be installed without jailbreaking. Photo: Buster Hein/Cult of Mac
Popcorn Time makes it ridiculously easy to “freely” stream almost any movie you want to your iOS device, but unless you have a jailbroken iOS device, actually getting it on the iPhone 6 is impossible, unless you know of a little loophole that allows you to install the banned app.
Adventurous iPhone owners can finally get Popcorn Time by utilizing the same time-hack loophole that allowed others to install Nintendo game emulators and other apps, no jailbreaking required. Popcorn Time isn’t strictly legal, but that’s not stopping thousands from pirating the app onto their iPhones and iPads by simply rolling back the clock on their device.
Here’s how to get ‘the Netflix of torrents’ on your iPhone right now:
When Tim Cook unveiled the gorgeously curved edges of the iPhone 6, I thought apps that use the iPhone 5/5s’ flat edges to create hands-free 360° panoramic photos and video, would quickly sink into the App Store abyss, but the minds at Cycloramic have created a brilliant work around, and all you need is your iPhone 6 charger.
Cycloramic for iPhone 6 was released on the App Store over weekend and brings with it the power to turn your iPhone charger into a panorama machine by simply laying it facedown on a smooth surface, and delicately wedging your iPhone 6 between its power prongs. Using the iPhone 6’s vibration motor the new Cycloramic app can rotate 360 degrees to capture videos and photos, completely hands-free.
GoPro has become the camera-of-choice for adventurers to document their wild and crazy stunts, and now all the action-packed drama captured by your GoPro can be broadcast live, so all your buddies can watch along as you soar over mountains in your wingsuit.
The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were unleashed on the world just two weeks ago, but Apple is already getting prepared to announce a handful of new products, including an updated iPad Air that will be the thinnest tablet Apple’s ever created.
As next week’s iPad Air event looms on the horizon, the Michael Report claims to have received pictures and illustrations of the new iPads, and have released a full report of the upcoming changes that may include an A8 processor with 2GB of RAM, thinner body, and some small design tweaks.
The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have been out for over two weeks now, and while only a few popular apps have updated to natively support the new screen resolutions, Google is updating Gmail for iOS to support the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus starting today.
The free update to the popular email app gets rid of the annoying fuzzy text iPhone 6 and 6 Plus users reported during the first two weeks. Now that the graphics have been updated the app puts the full Retina HD display to use, though it doesn’t appear that any new UI elements were added.
No new features were added either, but the app supports landscape mode when managing, reading and composing email. You can grab it for free from the App Store.
Nintendo is probably never going to release its treasure trove of retro titles onto iOS any year soon, but if you want to experience the thrill of stumping tutrtles dead in Super Mario World on your gigantic iPhone 6 Plus display, there’s a simple hack that can make it happen.
SiOS – a new Super Nintendo Entertainment System emulator created by Lucas Mendes Meng – can be installed on any iOS 8.0.2 device and lower thanks to a little hack via iDeviceHypethat gives your iPhone access to SNES games like Super Mario Kart, Donkey Kong Quest, Yoshiland, and hundred of other ROMS. And you don’t even need a jailbreak.
Here’s how to play SNES games on your iPhone 6 right now:
Deciding to buy a new iPhone is always easier than figuring out what to do with the old smartphone its replacing. 280 million used smartphones are expected to be shoved back into closest and drawers by the end of 2014 rather than being recycled, but the folks at MindHelix have come up with a novel solution: turn it into a smart-home security robot named Rico.
Rico – a smarthome security device that tracks changes in your home – gives your old iClunker a second life by putting it’s processing power and sensors back to work, so that you can track all the data from various sources in your home, and make changes remotely.
The Rico Kickstarter project just launched this week, and while the little security bot can do a number of things on its own, like monitoring temperature, carbon monoxide, smoke, humidity and motion detection, the device becomes more powerful when you feed it your old smartphone eWaste.
In the timeless game of hating on Apple, Bill Gates is an O.G. When his kids ask for iPads and MacBooks, he shoves a Microsoft Surface in their stockings. But when it comes to Apple Pay, even the former CEO of Microsoft thinks his old rivals’ mobile payments solution is absolutely fantastic.
In an interview discussing his latest philanthropic endeavor – leveraging cellphones to make banking more affordable for the world’s poorest countries – Gates told Bloomberg TV that he sees Apple Pay bringing NFC payments to a critical mass for all devices in the near future.
“The fact that in any application I can buy something, that’s fantastic,” Gates gushed. “The fact I don’t need a physical card anymore… and you’re going to be quite sure about who it is on the other end, that is a real contribution.”
Yeah, Bill. We’re impressed too. Check out the full interview below:
Apple went bigger than big for its unveiling of the iPhone 6 and Apple Watch, but when it hits the stage with a new iPad later this month the event will reportedly be much more low key.
Apple is planning to unveil its latest update on Thursday, October 16, reports John Paczkowski at Recode, only instead of hosting an encore at the Flint Center, the event will be held at Apple’s Town Hall Auditorium in Cupertino.
We get slammed 24/7 with new Apple rumors. Some are accurate, most are not. To give you a clue about what’s really coming out of Cupertino in the future, we’re busting out our rumor debunker each week to blow up the nonsense.
The iPhone 6 has finally landed, but now everyone’s attention is turning to Apple Watch and iPads. This week we’ve got rumors of the iPad Air going gold in October, possible sapphire problems for the Apple Watch, and a some new details of the long-rumored Retina iMac.
The Sub, designed by Marc Newson, will look familiar to Mac fans
Marc Newson is staying quiet on what he’s working on part-time with Jony Ive at Apple, but the famed designer is still promoting the work he’s doing outside of Apple, like the new beer machine he made for Heineken that looks just like a Mac Pro with a spout on top.
The Sub, a 41-centimeter tall machine shaped like a black metal beer cask -or a Mac Pro – can be filled with pressurized modules called Torps, that hold two liters of beer, and can be ordered to contain your favorite Heineken brand of brew. Newson says he’s a consistent beer drinker, but designed the new machine to be about more than just beer.
Apple killed the Camera Roll to the horror of many iPhotogs with the release of iOS 8.1, but the first iOS 8.1 beta shows the company has had a change of heart is open to bringing it back, but not for everyone.
iOS 8.1 beta 1 allows users to resurrect the classic Camera Roll album after it was replaced by the Recently Added photo, but you actually have to turn off Apple’s new iCloud Photo Library service to activate it.
If you want to get Camera Roll back and don’t mind sticking with physical storage, here’s how to turn it on:
Apple announced its adding some extra benefits for all employees this year, and while everyone isn’t getting a free Apple Watch, the company has decided to lengthen parental leave, reimburse your college education, and match how much time you spend doing charitable work. Plus some stock perks for your family incase you die.
In a memo shared with Fortune, Apple’s head of HR, Denise Young Smith, said the wage range of new benefits were created to address all four generations in its workforce.
iOS 8’s new Family Sharing feature makes it easier than ever for your entire family to share purchases on iTunes, iBooks and the App Store.
Family Sharing is about more than just sneaking copies of apps off your siblings’ accounts, though: It can bring harmony to your entire digital life by sharing photos, creating a family calendar and even keeping track of each others’ locations.
With minimal effort, you can sync up to six accounts. Here’s how to maximize Family Sharing’s potential.
Apple’s marketing machine has tried to straighten out the Bendghazi controversy that invaded the web last week, but someone might want to alert their billboard company in Berlin that the iPhone 6’s bendiness isn’t supposed to be a selling point.
iPhone 6 ads have started going up on billboards across the globe, but the monstrous ad (shown above) in Germany was so huge, they couldn’t fit the bigger than big display on the structure without bending it just a little bit – right near its supposed weak spot.
Another Apple reseller in the Netherlands had some similar woes with its iPhone 6 ads. Check out their hilarious poster below:
A U.S. judge has ruled in Apple’s favor in litigation filed against the company by Canadian patent licensing company WiLan, reports Reuters, after the judge issued a public statement on the case Wednesday afternoon.
Apple was being sued for supposedly violating two LTE patents held by WiLan, but a summary judgement from Judge Dana Sabraw ruled that the patents were invalid and note infringed.

Apple’s new design guru Marc Newson has barely been at Apple for nearly a month now, but that’s not going to stop him from also working on his own designs – like a fabulous new way to pour yourself a draft beer at home.
Marc unveiled his revolutionary new beer machine today in partnership with Heineken, but in an interview with Deezer, the famed designer also talked publicly for the first time about his new role at Apple, stating the position will only be part-time and he’ll still be based out of the U.K.
What Marc’s actually doing at Apple though is still a mystery. Apple’s PR handler wouldn’t let him comment on whether he had a hand in the Apple Watch’s design, and speculation on what he’s working on with Jony was quickly shot down. Whatever Apple does throw at him though, Marc said he can handle it, because “there isn’t really a big difference between designing a watch or a car or even a machine that pours beer.”
