Have Hope: iPhone 5 Jailbreak Is Getting Closer [Jailbreak]

By

A7iOGkuCAAA5m4l.jpg-large

When Apple released the iPhone 5 three months ago, jailbreak hackers were sent back to the grindstone. Like a new version of iOS, new Apple hardware almost always kills the current jailbreak. It’s a ruthless game of cat and mouse.

Has the iPhone 5 been jailbroken? Sort of. A picture of what looked like a jailbroken iPhone 5 spread like wildfire several months ago, but that’s only part of the story. An iPhone 5 jailbreak is being worked on, and good progress is being made. For jailbreakers, now is the time to have hope.

Apple has released two additional iPad mini TV spots following the release of its first “Piano” ad for the mini. “Photos” (shown above) focuses on viewing photography and editing pics in iPhoto on the mini next to the 10-inch Retina iPad. At the very end of the ad, the larger iPad slides out of frame so that the mini can be featured as its replacement.

The second spot, called “Books,” demonstrates reading in iBooks on the mini compared with the larger iPad:

Apple Ends Patent Dispute With HTC, Announces 10-Year Licensing Agreement

By

Apple and HTC have finally put the boxing gloves down.
Apple and HTC have finally put the boxing gloves down.

After years of battling in courtrooms around the world, Apple and HTC have reached an agreement over patent licensing that will be in effect for the next 10 years. Both companies have spent millions of dollars in ongoing lawsuits relating specifically to smartphone patents for the iPhone and HTC’s Android devices.

HTC was sued first by Apple back in 2010 with more than a dozen iPhone-related patents, and HTC then sued Apple a year later with infringement claims relating to not only the iPhone, but also the iPad and Mac.

Apple’s joint press release with HTC today announces the end of a long and tedious battle over patent litigation:

How To Cheat And Use Strategy To Beat Your Friends At Letterpress

By

Do you know that this was even a word?
Do you know that this was even a word?

Chances are you’ve heard of a game that’s like Words with Friends mixed with Scrabble and SpellTower. It has been taking Game Center by storm, and it’s called Letterpress.

Developed by Tweetie’s Loren Brichter, Letterpress is good, simple fun. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be tricky. Unless you’re a wordsmith and decent strategist, it can be difficult to efficiently use all of the letters on the game’s board to your advantage.

Here’s how to master (and yes, even cheat at) Letterpress:

Square Mobile Payments Now Accepted At Starbucks Locations In The U.S.

By

Screen Shot 2012-11-08 at 11.50.08 AM

Back in August, Square partnered with Starbucks to bring mobile payments to the coffee giant’s thousands of stores nationwide. Starbucks said that Square would be integrated into 7,000 of its stores across the U.S. by early November, and now the time has come.

Square has the ability to open a virtual tab with a merchant so you don’t have to scan your iPhone at the register, but Starbucks isn’t adopting this functionality. You’ll have to scan your iPhone after you order, like Passbook.

AT&T Decides To Allow FaceTime Over Cellular On LTE Devices With Tiered Data

By

ATT-Logo

AT&T received a lot of negative attention in the press when it announced that it would restrict the use of FaceTime over cellular on Apple devices running iOS 6. Instead of letting anyone use the video chat feature no matter the device or data plan, AT&T decided to keep FaceTime limited to customers with new Mobile Share plans. This meant that traditional data plan customers, including those with grandfathered unlimited data, were out of luck.

Today AT&T announced a change to its FaceTime over cellular policy, and things are looking better for iPhone 5 and LTE iPad owners on tiered data plans.

Earlier this year, Realmac Software and Impending released Clear, a bold and innovate to-do list app for the iPhone. Despite the seemingly never-ending supply of task managers in the App Store, Clear managed to set itself apart with its unique interface, gestures and clean design.

Fast forward to today, and Realmac Software is bringing Clear to the Mac. How does such a gesture-driven app live and breathe on the desktop? On the Mac, Clear is a fresh and enjoyable way to manage tasks. It’s apps like Clear that show the convergence between iOS and OS X.

By

ipad-mini-sleeve-06-by-mujjo-the-originals-collection

On of my favorite case makers, Mujjo, has announced its new iPad mini sleeve. Like Mujjo’s MacBook and iPhone sleeves, this new iPad mini holder is handcrafted with wool felt and quality leather. You’ll turn heads with this thing.

Mujjo’s design taste is very minimalist and swanky, and this new sleeve for Apple’s latest tablet looks like no exception.

Spotify Finally Gets Updated For The iPhone 5

By

Spotify iPhone 5

If you follow me on Twitter, you’ve seen me complain about Spotify’s lack of iPhone 5 support for the past several weeks. Every single app on my Home screen has been updated for the iPhone 5’s taller display except Spotify, and it has been getting on my nerves. First world problems, I know.

Whether you share my pain or not, Spotify has finally pushed out an update for its iOS app that brings support for the iPhone 5’s full resolution. You’ll of course need a premium account to play music. The Pandora radio-like part of Spotify is free for everyone.

Version 0.5.8 says, “Spotify now looks great on iPhone 5!” You can grab it now in the App Store.

Finally.

Sculpted from polished aluminum in a way that would probably make Jony Ive shed a tear of joy, the HeadStand suspends your plush headphones gracefully in the air.

Apple Looking To Drop Intel On Mac For ARM-Based Processors From iOS [Report]

By

apple_intel

For years, the rumor mill has been saying that Apple is looking to ditch Intel’s processors in the Mac lineup. Since the rise of iOS, Apple’s own “A” series chips have powered products like the iPhone and the iPad. Apple is a company known for wanting complete control over every facet of product design, including the innards of its iPhones and Macs.

Apple has partnered with Intel on the Mac for the past seven years, but internal changes within the Cupertino company could see the Mac move to ARM-based processors in the near future.

Now That Jony Ive Is In Charge Of iOS Design, Apps Could Start Looking Like This [Concept]

By

iOS 7 777

As part of the recent executive shakeup within Apple, industrial design guru Jony Ive has been put in charge of a new department that oversees the design of all hardware and software made by Apple. In essence, Ive is the quintessential tastemaker at Apple, a role formerly filled by the late Steve Jobs.

By now you’ve probably heard that Ive isn’t a fan of skeuomorphism, the make-it-look-retro-to-feel-familar design style that has been implemented in iOS under the guidance of Scott Forstall. That’s why Apple’s apps have so much Corinthian leather and stitching, or why the Compass app is designed to look like a literal compass.

Now that Ive is in charge of the overall look and feel of iOS, expect skeuomorphism to start fading away. Concept designer and Cult of Mac reader Adrian Maciburko sent us his take on a new iOS interface design that relies less on the analog aesthetic and more on the digital.

Instead of only being able to view an account in its entirety in the native Instagram app, you can now browse and follow other users on the desktop by clicking shared photo links you see on Twitter and Facebook.

Can’t Get Your Hands On An iPad mini? Apple Now Offering In-Store Pickup Reservations For Online Orders

By

Screen Shot 2012-11-04 at 3.41.19 PM

If you frequently buy brand new Apple products, you know the cycle: initial pre-order stock sells out quickly, launch day stock goes fast, and then Apple starts offering next-day reservations for in-store pickup. The iPad mini has reached the last stage in the cycle.

Apple retail stores get a limited supply of new products (in this case, the iPad mini) each night. If you’re having trouble getting your hands on an iPad mini, your best bet is to order one through Apple’s online store and see if you can walk in and pick it up in person the next day at your local Apple Store.

Second iMessage Outage In Less Than A Week Strikes “Some Users,” According To Apple [Updated]

By

iMessage fail

Looks like iMessage is having some more trouble after yesterday’s news that Apple iOS guru Scott Forstall is leaving the company. 5 days ago we reported a widespread iMessage outage that affected many of our readers around the world for hours. The issue was never addressed by Apple, but now we’re getting word that another outage is plaguing iCloud services.
