Facebook is quietly using your iPhone’s camera in the background while you scroll through your news feed.
The issue is believed to be a bug that affects devices running certain versions of iOS. It has been replicated on handsets with iOS 13.2.2, but not those still using iOS 13.1.3.
Tablets are a good way to view augmented reality, and Apple’s next AR push could start with the 2020 iPad Pro. Photo: Apple
An iPad Pro in development for next year will be the first with a 3D scanner capable of creating digital representations of real-world objects, according to an unconfirmed report. This will supposedly be used in augmented reality and virtual reality applications.
This scanner will next appear in the 2020 iPhone, and in AR/VR goggles and glasses in coming years.
Why not buy an old MacBook instead of Apple’s flawed lineup? Photo: Mark Solarski/Unsplash
Since I wrote about Apple’s ongoing MacBook disaster last week, and then offered a bunch of alternatives to the current MacBook lineup, several readers got in touch to ask which — if any — older MacBooks we’d recommend. I haven’t bought a MacBook in years, so I did a little research, and asked around the Cult of Mac crew.
So, let’s find out which is the best (old) MacBook you can buy today.

The AirPods Pro come in a Qi-enabled wireless charging case, which means you can just drop it onto a charging mat, grab them a while later, and everything is topped up and ready to go. But the LED indicator on the case blinks off soon after you start charging. What’s up? How do you find out if your AirPods are full yet?
Apple Watch is already swim-proof, but the next version could take that to new depths. Photo: Apple
It’s not exactly going out on a limb, but respected Apple expert Ming-Chi Kuo predicts next year’s Apple Watch Series 6 will be offer better performance than the current one, and include improved wireless speeds. Still, with the launch about likely 10 months away, it’s not surprising that only a few vague generalities can be said about Apple’s next wearable.
What’s more interesting is a mention of enhanced water resistance that raises the possibility of taking this device to the bottom of the sea.

Can Cupertino fix the sorry state of the MacBook? Cover: Leander Kahney/Cult of Mac
That butterfly keyboard. Those missing ports. The annoying lack of easy upgrades. Cult of Mac’s Charlie Sorrel makes a good case that the current MacBook lineup is a disaster. Can Apple turn it around?

Mophie 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Pad can handle iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods at once. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
Anyone who’s all-in on Apple has an iPhone, AirPods and Apple Watch. Recharging that combination every night can be a hassle, but the Mophie 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Pad can handle them all at the same time.
Apple likes it enough to put it on the Apple Store, so take a look to see if you need one on your nightstand.
We've rounded up some of the best Bluetooth headphones out there, each for well under 100 bucks. Photo: Cult of Mac Deals
Bluetooth headphones are the best way to enjoy personal audio. Obviously, they’ve got no wires to untangle. And the technology has advanced to the point where they sound as good as cabled alternatives — plus they add tons of additional features.
There are also many models to choose from — including those high-priced new AirPods Pro — so we rounded up some of the best deals we could find. Even better, each one of these great Bluetooth headphones costs well under $100.

Unlike MacBooks, the Surface Book comes with a 100%-working keyboard. Photo: Clint Patterson/Unsplash
Apple’s current line of MacBooks is probably its worst laptop lineup in years. The keyboards are so broken that even the newest MacBook Air is covered under Apple’s keyboard repair program. There are too few ports, and too much heat. And if you want to upgrade any internal parts? You’ll have to buy a new MacBook. But what are the best MacBook alternatives?
If you want to ditch the MacBook, you will find plenty of options. However, none of them offer one essential element: macOS. Switching to another operating system is like moving house and having to leave everything but your clothes behind. But there are workarounds even for that. Let’s check out the best alternatives to the MacBook in 2019.

If you’ve spent any time on this site, you know we’re big fans of VPNs. That’s because they’re an essential tool for making sure your private information stays private. But they can sometimes be confusing to use, and limited in what devices they’ll work on. So we recommend this versatile VPN as a way of staying safe and anonymous online, on any device.

The latest iPad Pro comes with a proper USB port, in the shape of USB-C. Now, as long as you can find the right cable or adapter, you can plug in pretty much anything short of a printer, and it will work as expected.
But you still need to find the right cable, or resort to a USB hub (none of which are really designed to work well with a tablet). In the past, that meant buying lots of USB-C to microUSB, USB-C to miniUSB, USB-C to USB-B cables, and so on.
Developers get their first taste of macOS Catalina 10.15.2 in beta form. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
Testing for the next version of macOS just began. macOS Catalina 10.15.2 will replace a update that came out only a week ago, but Apple never really stops work on any of its operating systems.
All we know at this point is that the initial beta of this upcoming version makes a few tweaks to networking, but more significant changes are possible.

iOS 13 brought all kinds of neat new features to the Files app, aka the iOS Finder. But maybe the best of all these is the new column view, a very Mac-like view of all the files and folders stored on your iPad. It’s not just an easy-to-browse view, either. The Files app column view also introduces a preview panel with plenty of tricks of its own.

It’s no secret that Photoshop for iPad is unfinished. A lot of fans have accepted that and are enjoying it for what it is. But others are not, and they’ve forced one Adobe chief to defend its current state.
Scott Belsky, the company’s chief product officer, took to Twitter this week to explain Adobe’s process — and to promise that Photoshop for iPad will get better.
The camera on the iPhone 11 Pro Max received high marks for performance from the independent testing lab DxOMark. It is one of the best smartphones for photo and video.

Taking a full-screen screenshot on a modern Mac or iPhone is just a matter of tapping a couple of buttons. But things used to be a whole lot more challenging, as longstanding Apple employee Chris Espinosa recently shared on Twitter.

From dedicated digital cameras to smartphones, advances in technology have put incredible image quality in the palms of our hands. The images we can create with pocket-sized cameras are on par with professional optics from years past. But these are hand-held cameras, so the quality of video we shoot is still limited by how steadily we can hold them. Not so if you have this universal gimbal stabilizer.
