Improvements To Foxconn Working Conditions = Fewer iPads For Apple

With worker overtime now reduced, Foxconn simply can't assemble as many iPads as it used to.
With worker overtime now reduced, Foxconn simply can't assemble as many iPads as it used to.

Apple’s new iPad is still selling like hot cakes, and new customers continue to face a 1-2-week shipping delay when purchasing through the Apple online store. But the company is reportedly struggling to meet demand with production constrained by Retina display supply and the recent cuts to factory worker overtime at Foxconn.

Procreate Painting App Gets Stunning Update For New iPad

Procreate piles on the new features, and yet remains lag-free and easy to use
Procreate piles on the new features, and yet remains lag-free and easy to use

Procreate, the already excellent iPad drawing app, has been updated to play nice with the iPad 3’s Retina Display. But to dwell on that would be to ignore the massive changes that have gone into this version. Make no mistake: This might be labelled v1.6, but it is much more like a v2.0.

iphone-4s-introduction-images

While we know a new iPhone is coming this year out of Cupertino, we don’t know exactly when that iPhone will launch or with what specs, but what we do know is that Apple is testing prototypes of the new iPhone in its labs. This morning, a new report sheds some information on the new iPhone that Apple is testing, along with a new iPod touch.

Don’t Try To Use Your iPad In Portrait Mode While Wearing Polarized Sunglasses

By

Forget trying to wear your polarized glasses while trying to use your iPad in portrait mode.

Do you wear polarized sunglasses? If so, you can go ahead and forget trying to use your iPad in portrait mode while wearing them. You think we’re kidding? No.. when wearing polarized sunglasses the iPad’s screen turns black when using it in portait mode — rendering it useless until you flip it over in landscape. Devastating, we know.

First New iPad Billboard Spotted In Hollywood

By

billboard

This morning we posted a story wondering why Apple hasn’t posted any billboards for the new iPad yet. Usually Apple posts new billboards almost immediately after a product is announced, but some old iPad 2 billboards are still lingering around the country with nary a glimpse of big sign adage for the new iPad. Well it looks like the new iPad billboards have just started to roll out. We just got the above picture from our Twitter follower that shows the first billboard for the new iPad, spotted in Hollywood CA. The billboard focuses almost completely on the new retina screen of the iPad rather than focusing on the design of the device like the iPad 2 billboards had.

Have you seen any iPad billboards in your city? If so, leave us a link to a picture of your local new iPad billboard and we’ll included it in this post.

Air Display makes OS X look even crisper on the new iPad's Retina display.

Avatron has released a new version of its popular Air Display iOS app that allows the user to view OS X Lion in hi-res HiDPI mode on the new iPad’s Retina display. Air Display turns your iPad or iPhone into a secondary display for your Mac, and the latest update takes advantage of the new iPad’s 2048×1536 screen resolution by exploiting a super hi-resolution mode in Lion called HiDPI.

With its Lumia 900 set to make its much-anticipated debut in the U.S. on April 8, Nokia has kicked off a new advertising campaign called Smartphone Beta Test, in which it mocks devices like the iPhone and Android-powered rivals. Its most noticeable stab is at the iPhone’s “Death Grip,” which can be seen in the clip above.

Instapaper Gets Minor Update With Major New Features

The modern and good-looking cell view (left) and the new dimmed images in night mode

Instapaper has just been bumped from v4.1 to 4.1.1, But despite this tiny numerical increment, there are a few big changes worth writing about.

Marco Arment, the coffee-slurping, BMW-driving playboy developer of the iPad’s best read-later app, has fixed a few bugs introduced in the Retina-ready v4.1 released last week. These include some odd rendering problems for the new default font, Elena, and some speeding up to the page animations which were slowed down by some weird iPad 3 oddities.

But there are also a few new features, and one reversion that should please the luddites who hate the cool cell-table layout of the article list.

Foxconn’s 46.5% Stake In Sharp’s Japanese LCD Plant Could Mean Better Battery Life For Future iOS Devices

Foxconn, the company that assembles almost all of Apple’s devices —- plus plenty more for the likes of Amazon, Dell, Microsoft, and Sony —- has confirmed today that it has secured a 46.5% stake in Sharp’s giant LCD plant in Sakai, Japan. The deal is expected to help Sharp improve its performance, and could make low-energy IGZO displays a possibility for future iPads

Guardian App Gets Even Better With Update, But No Retina Support

The updated Guardian is cleaner and clearer, but still doesn't support retina graphics
The updated Guardian is cleaner and clearer, but still doesn't support retina graphics

The Guardian’s excellent iPad app has been updated to make it cleaner, faster and easier to use. The Guardian is the one Newsstand periodical I pay for because, even though you can get almost all of the same content on the website for free, the app is outstanding.

The new version makes it even better. However, there is one huge omission: support for the new iPad’s Retina Display.

Facebook Adds Retina-Ready Photos, But Not For The New iPad

Facebook will now serve Retina-ready images, but not to the iPad
Facebook will now serve Retina-ready images, but not to the iPad

You and I may hate Facebook, but with almost a billion users, it’s the place where most people put their photos. And now, at least you won’t have to totally slum it if you visit: The customer-hostile social network will now serve hi-res photographs, but not — oddly — to the iPad.

The Mysterious Way Safari Handles iPad Retina Images

By

Apple's high-res hero JPG, scaled down to fit on this page

A weird bug in Mobile Safari means that your iPad might refuse to show you hi-res images on your new Retina Display, instead scaling them down and making them look just as bad as they would if they were low resolution to begin with. Weirdly, this issue only affects JPGs, and then only certain JPGs. What’s going on?

Apple Updates iTunes Movie Trailers App For The New iPad’s Retina Display

By

IMG_0011

Apple has finally updated its iTunes Movie Trailers app for the new iPad’s Retina display. I say ‘finally’ because most of Apple’s own iOS apps were updated with Retina graphics on March 7th, but the Trailers app was left out.

You can download the update for Trailers in the App Store now, and it looks fantastic.

Unlike the Netflix app, Apple’s Trailers will let you stream video in stunning on HD. If you haven’t been using Trailers on your iPad and iPad, download it now and discover what you’ve been missing. Not only can you view trailers for upcoming movies, but there’s a handy calendar view for release dates, charts, favorite starring, and ticket/showing info. A great app just got even better.

Netflix App Updated With Retina Graphics For The New iPad, HD Video Coming Next

By

Netflix for iPad just got a facelift.
Netflix for iPad just got a facelift.

Netflix has updated its popular iPad app with enhanced Retina graphics. Everything from the icon to the app’s text has been updated for the new iPad’s shiny display, and the update is available now in the App Store.

One of the biggest complaints about the Netflix iOS app has been the lack of HD video streaming, and according to Netflix, HD video is coming soon. We wouldn’t be surprised if the next app version included the upgrade. We can’t wait for that!

Remember that streaming HD video over 4G on the new iPad will use a lot of data, so be aware of how much video you stream on the go.

Even Pixel Doubled Games Look Astonishing On The New iPad

We now know that the new iPad uses retina images when blowing up iPhone apps to fill its big screen, but what does that mean exactly? It’s one thing to know that Spotify doesn’t look horrible anymore, but it’s another thing entirely to see the differences side-by-side. That’s why the fine folks at Touch Arcade grabbed screenshots of various versions of Real Racing running on the new iPad and the iPad 2. The results are astonishing.

Retina iPhone Apps Now Look Much Better Zoomed In On The New iPad

By

Spotify for iPhone doesn't look half bad on the new iPad.
Spotify for iPhone doesn't look half bad on the new iPad.

Something you may have noticed while playing with your new iPad is that many iPhone apps now look much better when expanded to fill the iPad’s 9.7-inch screen. You’ve always been able to run iPhone apps on the iPad in their shruken, non-Retina resolution. Tapping the little ‘2x’ button would instantly make the app expand to fill the display. An unfortunate side effect was that enlarged iPhone apps on the iPad looked pretty awful.

Thanks to the new iPad’s stunning 2048×1536 Retina display, iPhone apps now look much better when zoomed in on the tablet’s shiny screen.

No matter how much you scrub, these smudges are never coming off
No matter how much you scrub, these smudges are never coming off

The picture above will be familiar to any of you who owns an iPad. Unnoticeable when the screen is lit up, but distracting in strong sunlight and disgusting when the screen is off, greasy, filthy finger marks are the worst thing about the iPad.

Except that the picture above is actually a Retina-ready iPad wallpaper, ready for you to download and disgust your friends.

Instapaper Won’t Support The New iPad’s Retina Display… For Now

By

Instapaper-iPad-Main-Landscape

The new iPad’s Retina Display is perfect for reading, so some of the most highly-sought after app updates are going to be the ones that make the best iPad e-reading apps compatible with the doubled resolution. And, in fact, many such apps, like Kindle, Evernote and Readability have already updated.

Unfortunately, when you get your new iPad today, you’ll have to slog through Marco Arment’s best-selling e-reading app Instapaper in fuzzy old SD. But don’t despair, Retina Display support is coming soon.
