Worried about Apple’s recent deprecation of Java under OS X, ending Apple’s own line of custom Java packages? Don’t be: Apple and Oracle have just announced that they will be partnering to bring the OpenJDK project to OS X, guaranteeing the continued support of Java on OS X.

Essentially, what the OpenJDK announcement seems to be outlining is a way for Cupertino to pass the torch of Java development under OS X to Oracle. Apple will continue to support Java SE 6 under Snow Leopard and the forthcoming OS X 10.7 Lion, but once Java SE 7 comes out, Java will instead be Oracle’s responsibility to both build and distribute.

Apple reportedly will announce a slate of European partners for its iAds mobile advertising this week. However, the accomplishment has come at a cost for the Cupertino, Calif. company. Along with two delays and some concessions on pricing, the same questions over iAd practices are following Apple from the U.S. to Europe.

The announcement will likely be just that – a rundown of familiar brands such as L’Oréal, Renault and Nestlé. Only two or three actual ad campaigns will launch on the iPhone or iPod touch in December. “Most will not run until next year,” The Financial Times reports.

We reported on Friday that a nasty WiFi bug causing random drops in the gold master build of iOS 4.2 was likely to delay release of the update from anywhere between a few days to the end of the month.

It looks like that report was right: Apple has just dropped a second GM build of iOS 4.2 for the iPad, updating the GM from 8C134 to 8C134b.

Where this puts the official release of iOS 4.2 is anyone’s guess. We’ve previously heard rumors to expect iOS 4.2 to drop tomorrow, but some sources are placing the official release date as far away as November 24th.

Ultimately, what it will all come down to is how much testing Apple thinks the new GM will require for a fix to a single WiFi bug. Taking all bets!

When Newton North High School in Newton, MA was rebuilt recently as a new, state of the art facility, a primary goal was to teach students information literacy using current technology. With a generous budget and the opportunity to start fresh, the result is a school with five Mac-based computing labs, over 130 new iMacs, and a library that rivals one found at many colleges.

It’s enough to make any Apple user envious, and much of the potential is still untapped. “With a lot of this being so new,” says Phil Golando, IT Manager, “we don’t even know all the ways we can use this stuff.”

At the top of our favorite iOS apps list this week is Time Flies – a simple but useful application that helps you keep track of how long it’s been since you last completed a chore or task. It’s now even easier to remember when you last called your parents, bought flowers for your wife, or cleaned the house.

Our second must-have app is a quick and powerful to-do app called SpeedTask. It features a simplistic, easy to use user interface, with free ‘cloud’ syncing that allows you to access your tasks from any device, or sync them with iCal on your Mac.

Also featured this week is the redesigned ReBirth, which is now available on the iPad, emulating the classic Roland TB-303 Bass synth and the Roland TR-808 & 909 drum machines. Making music on your iOS device has never been so powerful!

Who cares which is faster, which has the best operating system, or how much they cost? What we’re all dying to know is which lasts longer on a disposable barbecue out of an iPhone 4, an Android G2, and an HTC Surround.

In a video supposedly designed to promote the EZGrill disposable barbecue, all three devices are cooked like digital smart-burgers in a bid to see which lasts longer.

Without spoiling it for you and giving too much away, the Android was the first to give in before the iPhone’s temperature error popped up leaving it in second place. Check out the charred remains in the video below.

Apple quietly tweaked its iTunes application for the iPad today and introduced support for their music-based social network Ping.

Ping is now available through a tab at the bottom of the application, and it gives users access to their feed, their profile, who they follow, and who follows them. The function also connects to a Twitter account and automatically tweets anything you ‘like’ or post on Ping.

Ping for iPad also features a concerts section that allows users to see concerts coming up in their area, upcoming tours, which concerts they’re attending, and links to purchase tickets through Ticketmaster.

The team behind OpeniBoot, which allows users to run the Android OS on the iPhone 3G, are now hard at work on porting the hack to the iPhone 4 and the iPad.

Jailbreak expert Hexxeh posted a video on his blog yesterday that shows OpeniBoot running on the iPad. There’s not much to see at this point, but the video’s below if you’d like to see it.

This is a great step towards booting Android on Apple’s latest iOS devices, and it shouldn’t be too long before the hack is available for release.

At the top of our favorite games list this week is the second instalment of Amateur Surgeon – the game that lets you attempt surgery with a pizza cutter. With new patients, new surgeries, and a whole slew of medical ethics violations, this sequel sure packs an entertaining punch.

Visual designer Charis Tsevis creates high-impact images by piecing together digital minutia into stunning mosaics.

Tsevis, based in Athens, Greece has worked for Toyota, IKEA, Bradesco Bank, Saatchi and Saatchi, BBH and media like Time, Fortune, Los Angeles Times, Sunday Times and Forbes, to name a few.

But you probably know his work from the intricate portraits he created of Steve Jobs from Apple-related images, which frequently grace the covers of international magazines.  (He starts with a Mac-only software called Studio Artist by Synthetik before heading to Photoshop.)

These odes to Apple can sometimes take a week or so of 16-hour days to put together — it’s the kind of work only a Cupertino fan could love.

Hard Candy’s iPad Stylus is an odd-duck product. It’s a stylus for a tablet that’s designed to be used with your finger. Like Steve Jobs said, “If you see a stylus, they blew it.”

But it’s actually pretty cool. I’ve got one, and I like it — even if I never use it.

I’m not alone. The Candy Pen iPad Stylus is already on its way to becoming a big hit.

Apple has released an update for iTunes today which brings the software up to version 10.1. This update introduces support for AirPlay and the iOS 4.2 firmware for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch.

With iTunes 10.1, you can now wirelessly stream videos straight from iTunes on your computer to the latest AppleTV. The update also provides a number of important stability and performance improvements.

All we need now is iOS 4.2. Come on, Apple!

Over at his site The Brooks Review (which has been publishing a lot of good stuff recently), Ben Brooks wrote up his thoughts on a variety of writing applications for Mac OS X.

No way would I ever plug in my Gibson SG Les Paul Custom into my iPhone 3G. Just no way. Now that I have the iPhone 4 and its increased processor speed, crystal clear pictures, and hardcore stage presence, I’ll reconsider.

Seriously though, playing an instrument through an iDevice is more of just a hobby or gimmick if you’re going to try and use it for modeling amps and effect pedals. What really convinced me to hook up a quarter inch jack to my phone was the Moog Filtatron App. Synthesizers are most certainly perfect for and acceptable to use in your music even if they’re coming from you Macbook or iPad. If they have the Moog name attatched to it then you’re just that much more legit.

If you have a box full of cables tucked away somewhere, you may have all that you need to construct your very own iRig. Even if you purchased all the cables from The Shack, you’ll probably come away with a cheaper version, and you’ll feel like MacGyver.

On the one hand, I love the idea behind Time Flies, a to-do app from Absent Design which allows you to record the things you do, then tells you how long it’s been since you last did them.

It’s a great idea, right? Time Flies keeps you honest. “No, you didn’t go to the gym ‘the other day’… it was three weeks ago. No, you didn’t buy your girlfriend flowers last month… it was three months ago. No, you didn’t move the stash a week ago… it’s been a month.” And so on.

My only problem here is that while I’d love to use this app myself, I definitely don’t want my girlfriend getting wind of it and using it against me. Claiming that it’s her turn to do the dishes or grout the tiles is going to be a lot harder if she’s got an app specifically devoted to catch me in my lies.

Apple’s decided not to bundle OS X with Flash anymore, and could this chart make the reasons for that any clearer? 42% of the security updates in Mac OS X 10.6.5 were dedicated to fixing problems with Flash. Add in the fact that on the new MacBook Air, merely stripping Flash from the default OS X install adds two hours to the battery life, and the message is clear: Flash is a product of garish incompetence and staggering ineptitude, and the quicker it dies, the better.

We personally love it, but not everyone thinks the new AppleTV is much of an improvement over the old model, which featured local storage, legacy outputs, was fairly easily upgradeable and was easily hackable with great media center software like the Boxee Box.

If you’re one of those nostalgists and think the AppleTV took a step back when it became a streaming media only affair, good news: Apple’s dropped the price of the 160GB first-gen AppleTV from just $50 more than the new model.

Of course, buy that and you’ll miss out on the inevitable fun that everyone is going to start having once jailbreak developers start really mastering the capabilities of the new iOS-driven AppleTV, but heck, there’s always room for both in your entertainment center.

We already know that if a couple of overly restrictive NDAs hadn’t gotten in the way, Apple could have ended up owning the technology behind Microsoft’s new motion-control accessory for the Xbox 360 game console, but if you’ve already bought a Kinect and would like to see what a Mac with Kinect-like abilities could have been like, the hacker community’s already starting to put the software together, starting with hacker Theo Watson getting the Kinect’s cameras to output under OS X.
