Jailbreak developers have found a way to run macOS on the iPhone 14 Pro Max. But it works as a virtual machine, not a full swap of iOS. The trick piggybacks on an existing iPad project that was never built with phones in mind.
The update comes from Virtual Mac, an open-source tool that lets some iPads run full macOS. Version 1.2.1 of the project extends the package to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. And, as expected, support is thin, and the trade-offs are real.
Virtual Mac brings macOS on iPhone 14 Pro Max through virtualization
Virtual Mac does not replace iOS, nor does it dual-boot into macOS. Instead, it runs a macOS guest inside a virtual machine while iOS keeps running underneath. That’s the same approach apps like UTM and VirtualBuddy take for running virtual machines on an Apple silicon Mac.
The developer of the project — nfzerox — built it by pulling Apple’s own Hypervisor, Virtualization and ParavirtualizedGraphics frameworks from macOS. Those frameworks were then modified to load on iOS, giving the guest system hardware-backed virtualization, not slow software simulation.

But getting it running still requires a jailbreak. Users will need to install Dopamine, a popular tool for jailbreaking iOS. Then comes the developer’s own repository, added through Sileo. Only after these steps can the Virtual Mac package be installed.
Supported versions span macOS Monterey through macOS Sequoia, with the latter being recommended for stability. Some experimental builds reportedly boot, too, with varying results.
According to a write-up by onejailbreak that first documented phone support, version 1.2.1 improves the interface specifically for the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. It adjusts layouts for the smaller screen and also cuts down on text truncation. Apple pulled Hypervisor access from the kernel starting with iOS 16.4, so official support stops at iOS 16.3.1.
Community testing pushes past the official limits
Reports from the r/onejailbreak community describe testers going further than the developer officially supports. One user reportedly booted macOS on an iPhone 14 Pro Max running on iOS 16.1.1. That’s technically outside the documented ceiling.
The setup reportedly needed the virtual machine capped at 4GB of RAM to stay stable. Performance reportedly improved in Safe Mode, and turning off tweak injection helped, too. The phone reportedly ran noticeably hot in testing.
Hardware limits make the phone a rougher ride than the iPad
An iPhone 14 Pro Max has less RAM and less thermal headroom than a high-end iPad Pro. Anyone attempting to do this would need to keep memory allocation conservative from the start. Also, this isn’t close to a daily-driver setup.
The project has moved fast since its original release in August. Previous updates added support for Apple’s high-end creative software, with trial versions of Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, and Pixelmator Pro downloadable from the guest’s menu bar.
The 1.2.1 release mostly focused on input responsiveness and stability fixes, and the phone-specific interface work rounded it out.
Jailbreaking an iPhone carries its own risks. Warranties get voided, and device security takes a hit. The project is entirely community-built and has no affiliation with Apple. So anyone curious should treat it as an experimental proof of concept rather than a practical upgrade for running macOS on an iPhone.
