iPhone 8 beats iPhone X in early benchmark tests

iPhone 8
But all Apple's new phones beat their Android rivals.

The iPhone X is Apple’s top-of-the-range iPhone, but if you’re looking for impressive Geekbench scores — referring to the cross-platform CPU benchmark scoring system — you may be better off sticking with either the iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus.

That’s according to scores Apple’s new devices have achieved on Geekbench’s iOS Benchmark Chart. Despite all three devices having Apple’s new A11 Bionic Fusion chip, the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus outstrip the iPhone X on both single core and multi core performance.

The iPhone 8 comes top of the Single Core iOS Benchmark Chart with an average score of 4,195, closely followed by the iPhone 8 Plus’ 4,128. In multi core, the iPhone 8 also wins with 10,005, against the iPhone 8 Plus’ 9,829. The iPhone X, meanwhile, manages 4,028 in the single core and 9,287 in the multi core stakes.

Despite having the same chip, it is likely that the iPhone X suffers slightly in the Geekbench department because of the extra work the A11 chip has to do to handle the extra features of the iPhone X, particularly for its new Face ID facial recognition unlocking technology.

A whole lot better than Android

All three of the new generation iPhones stack up very favorably compared to their Android rivals, however. The A11 Bionic Fusion chip smashes the single and multi core performance of 2024 and 6719, respectively, of the new Samsung Galaxy S8.

Overall, Apple’s new A11 Bionic chip is reportedly 70 percent faster than last year’s A10 chip. Apple spent considerable time bragging about it at last week’s iPhone media event — and it’s easy to see why. If you’re trying to decide between an iPhone X and an iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus, make sure to check out our comparison post here, written by my esteemed colleague Killian Bell.

Less pixels of course it does

    • The best low-light camera of any smartphone most likely- 2 generations better than the iPhone 6.

      • Bespin says:

I don’t know if it truly is best in low light. I suspect their bare older phones like my 950 that do just as good if not better.

The tragedy her is they are basically using the same 12MP Samsung camera unit on a new “future of Smartphones” device at 1600. When my phone had 20MP Zeiss two years ago. Seems like they are skimping on that component running virtually the same for four years.

      • You obviously don’t know much about camera technology. Advertised pixel count means absolutely nothing. 20MP on a sensor the size of a pencil eraser is a joke. Getting 20 million pixels on a 35mm sensor that is 100 times larger than your smartphone sensor is pushing the limits of sensor technology. Apple is well aware of this and that is why they stick with 12MP even though they spend more money on their camera tech than Samsung spends designing an entire phone like the S8. The iPhone X has 4 state-of-the-art lenses that all have mechanical image stabilization, and all new iPhones (8 and X) have a new Apple-desgned hardware chip developed just for low-light noise removal. Your 2 year old camera is a piece of junk compared to these new cameras. Don’t take my word for it- study the image samples these phones are getting in dark situations.

      • Bespin says:

Ok then explain this. I showed an ATT rep pictures off my phone and she was BLOWN AWAY after dealing with Galaxy’s and iPhones all day..then she proceeded to trash them.

She looked at her Note 8 and shook her head

      • Bespin says:

Not junk it blows peoples minds , when I show them my pictures. Why apple did not do a camera spec jump to at least 16MP is a mystery heck they have the bump to fit it in.

Simple More pixels better at crop.. got it?
Less pixels ok for 6″ screens or web..so I’m sure iPhone excels there

      • OK, just so you know I have been working in digital imaging professionally for 30 years now. Without a doubt, in every definition of the word “expert”, I qualify as a lifelong expert in digital imagery and color theory. Simply look up my name on LinkedIn and you will see there are few people who have been doing this as long as I have. It is clear to me that you understand nothing at all about how cameras or digital sensors work. That is OK, as I deal with people like you every day, and I am happy to educate you if you actually want to learn something about the topic I have studied all my adult life. Again, read this: Megapixels have NOTHING to do with the quality of an image. At least, not when discussing the difference between a 10 MP image and a 20 MP image. send me a 10MP image right now, and I will res it up in photoshop to 20MP. Did I just make it twice as sharp? NOPE! That is what your silly camera in your phone is doing. Those 20 million pixels are fake pixels! You got scammed by the marketing department of your phone company. Apple spends 3-5 times the amount of money in R&D than any other smartphone company. The fact that you think your old phone takes photos that equal any new phone is laughable. take a selfie with your phone out on the streets using only the streetlights to light your face. (Turn off your flash) Tell me how amazing it looks. (hint: It will look horrible) The iPhone X will take stunning photos under the same conditions.

        Lumia 950:
Now before Lumia 950 fans howl in protest

******I want to note that I still suspect the 950 is the best smartphone camera in the world, over all lighting conditions and use cases ********

Boom. Now you can claim 30years of expertise yet results say otherwise.

Bespin is a moron with no clue about photography, he just wants attention, best ignore the dullard, stop giving a droning troll what he wants.

He obviously knows nothing about what he is talking about.

      • Bespin says:

I know nothing? Ok bright guy explain to me the 1600 iPhone..give me the plusses of it and tell me how it blows everything else out of the water go for it.

      • Scr-U-gle says:

        No problem wingnut.

12mp is a resolution, that isn’t proof that it is the same sensor, and it can’t be as this years sensor is physically a different size.

        Secondly, seeing as I have spent the last seven years as a Pro tog after working as a graphic designer for 15 years and a few years here and there in post, all the while working as a studio IT manager/studio builder at some global graphics companies, then I will explain to a know nothing winkle-bag;
The larger the pixel, the better the light gathering capabilities.

That’s why any decent photographer wouldn’t go much above 25mp on a 35mm sensor.

I use phase one medium format backs on my hasselblad for above 25mp needs.

Samboom, Sony and google agree, that’s why they all gave up on the ridiculous pixel war when they all realised that even the least informed (excluding you of course) people were understanding that too many pixels were worse than the right amount. Even now, an 8mp sensor of the same size is better than the same sized 12mp.

I think we are done here, go back, delete all you nonsense comments about how more pixels are better, you have made enough of a fool of yourself already.

      • Bespin says:

Then why does my phone outperform bot a Galaxy Note 8 and an iPhone 7 Plus bright guy in photos both victims in head to head same subject/scenes

      • Scr-U-gle says:

You don’t even have a clue on the basics of photography, why would your opinion mean anything?

I suggest you go read a 101 for dummies on how sensors work.

You are just continuing to make a fool of yourself, keep it up.

      • Bespin says:

See you apple fans like benchmark stats that’s why the A11 “bionic” is the best thing since sliced cheese according to you all yet ios crashes daily and you use a basic ui from decade ago

Cherry picked stats don’t mean jack..its real-world actual usage and performance with human eyes. I’m 20-0 against flagships with my 950 since I got it..pretty darn good record. This agreed by the owners of the other 20 flagships including all the latter iphones

      • Scr-U-gle says:

How about the fact that the iPhone 7 Plus is two minutes faster than the Samboom Not 8 is real world usage!

There is no point in me explaining about pixel size to someone who understands so little about digital imaging, no go play with your toys mungo.

      • Bespin says:

Got cloud? Got watch? LOL you play with your 10yo springboard boring.

      • 程肯 says:

        Show us your pictures.

      • DrMuggg says:

Damn, is this Bill Costello, the infamous Café Racer Bike Builder from New York?

      • Bespin says:

Last night I destroyed a 1000 dollar NOTE 8 with my 2yo 950 in a photo challenge LOL nice to see the deflation then the “Um its a nice phone …” comment

        Bring on the X

      • Daniel Michael says:

As Bill pointed out, and I pointed out a few days ago, you don’t understand much about camera technology. Megapixels mean next to nothing except to insecure trolls/android fanboys who derive superiority from spec sheets. You seem to have missed the part where both iPhones outperform every Android on the planet. Your trolling is reaching the obsessive stage.

      • Bespin says:

May outperform every Android although I doubt that. to be the case. Absolutely sure it struggles in comparison to top end Lumias with Zeiss optics and 20MP’s

      • Daniel Michael says:

2444 comments since April is a lot of comments. Is lying in wait on an Apple centric site like CoM for someone to write an Apple centric comment to rebut the only way you can get someone to respond to you or is @LukeB33 onto something?

      • Bespin says:

What is this obsession you have with why I am here? Seriously lets have an adult conversation about how Apple dropped the ball and find people solutions.

      • 程肯 says:

“Spec sheets is an Apple thing , the rest of us just use what we have and get honest feedback.”

        LOL, the irony.

    • LukeB33 says:

Do you post on literally every iPhone article. It’s a weird obsession. Course now I’m thinking you work for cult of mac to drum up comments. I mean, no one’s really gonna take your outrageous comments to heart so it won’t drive off its audience. I mean, You’re a windows mobile fan boy. Even windows execs think that’s a joke.

      • Bespin says:

No , they don’t and yes if an iPhone article comes up I’ll comment if I want. You should worry less about my intentions and more about Apple intentions. Watch it you may learn something.

See if I was off base I would have been run out by now with facts, in lack of that perhaps I’m correct.

      • BusterH says:

Can confirm, this dum-dum does not work for CultofMac

    • Scr-U-gle says:

Every iPhone for the last three years out performs every drone phone ever made, and that’s a fact.

You know nothing about photography, firstly; Apple use Sony sensors; secondly, Samboom had to reduce pixels to even get close to matching the iPhone; and thirdly, more pixels per inch makes worse not better images, that’s basic photography that even the least informed amateur would know.

      Basically you are an imbicile.

      • Bespin says:

No, I’m not I happen to be very Intelligent and likely know much more about everything having to do with technology and where it is going.

The iPhone (insert name here) has a good camera so do many other phones including my Zeiss PureView 20MP. We all take GREAT photos difference is mine is 298 and your is 850ish..you compare mine are better.

Why ? I challenge all late flagships to a photo dual and guess what I have a perfect record or a tie on candid photos taken of same scenes. It’s a no-brainer if you compared YOUR phone to any what used to be available Lumia .

iPhone cameras have not exceeded magically my two-year-old camera.

Now this A11 Bionic processor..graet! What for?
When is the last time you felt your iPhone was slow when new, now I know after two years itas slow but I’m talking brand new? Does Springboard now flay or something, are you recovering from (we all know) iPhone app crashes sooner?

I do not think I’m an imbicile nor do I think you are ..but come on man take a look around outside you apple world where you just got Oled and wireless charging and no one ever was itching for Animoji come on man.

Now if you want to spend 949 on an 8 that is a 7 with glass back and wireless go for it..if you want to spend 1600 on an X cool. But don’t try to tell me I’m an imbicile.

      • DrMuggg says:

        You must be utterly stupid.

      • Bespin says:

Am I? Let’s see after you buy the new iPhones then return to this conversation

      • DrMuggg says:

What are u trying to prove? That I can buy whatever I like? That u can have an opinion about what I am buying?
I don’t care about you, would not even p*ss on you if you catched fire…

      • Bespin says:

Why are certain apple fans like this? Do I by shining facts on Apple offend your reality? Seriously chill.

  2. David Kaplan says:

    It’s driving a more pixel-dense display.

    • barely_free says:

surprised the author did not realize this difference results in a lower score.

    • Jay says:

So it should’ve had an even better processor. Maybe even an A11X.. The X is such a rip off. 8 and 8 Plus (7s and 7s Plus) are the better phones here. The mini kinect and Amoled displays are nice features but not enough to justify the higher price because just about everything else is the same.

      • Bespin says:

“8 and 8 Plus (7s and 7s Plus) are the better phones here.” True (if you put the words “High priced flagships”)

“The mini Kinect and Amoled displays are nice features but not enough to justify the higher price because just about everything else is the same.” True

    • Narg says:

So, that still translates to real world performance, so the S8 is basically gimped if you use your “logic”

  3. Tommy Peters says:

Paraphrasing Matthew ‘The one who dipped his hand into my bowl shall obey me whole’.

Seriously folks, a beer to Ive for bringing Jobs back, not with the 8 which still is bowl and backside garden-variety smartphone; but with the X, the Jobs 3-piece sandwich design, which incidentally the Cannondale Raven’s magnesium spine is reminiscent of. Point is, no one seems to highlight this design distinction, neither was the Raven’s spine a bullet point for the bicycling fraternity two decades ago.

On a tangent, the Raven advertorial says its “spine absorbs vertical, in-plane loads and secures the frame’s skins in channels along the spine’s lateral faces which also provides secure mounting points for the headset, bottom bracket, seat post, shock absorber and swing-arm.”

  4. Bespin says:

“Profound day”.. Tim Cook 9/19/17 LOL

    Almost as great as “courage”….

    Tim Cook…”remember this day”.
