iOS 7.1.1 has a jailbreak, but you can’t use it… yet

Unfortunately iOS 7.1 brought an end to the versatile Evasi0n jailbreak, which let anyone using iOS 7 to iOS 7.0.6 run unsigned code on their iOS device.

But no-one thought that would be it forever when it came to jailbreaks, and this weekend two prominent hackers posted evidence of iOS 7.1.1 jailbreaks online.

First up was i0n1c, a.k.a. Stefan Essar, who posted the below tweet, apparently showing a jailbroken iPhone running both iOS 7.1.1 and Cydia:

i0n1c went on to note that the jailbreak he used “is not based on a long vulnerability chain. It uses a single beautiful kernel bug that goes from mobile to kernel.”

Shortly after, fellow jailbreaker winocm teased a second iOS 7.1.1 jailbreak — noting that the solution could be ported to newer iOS devices if only someone was willing to “put in the effort.”

While this all sounds well and good, however, it’s possible that we won’t see a public version of the iOS 7.1.1 jailbreak in the foreseeable future. That’s because WWDC is just around the corner, where Apple is likely to announce iOS 8. Once iOS 8 lands it’s likely that attention will be placed on jailbreaking that instead.

In addition, winocm is reportedly starting an internship with Apple sometime this year — which could well signal the end of her involvement with the jailbreak scene.

Hey, it wouldn’t be the first time Apple has adopted the “if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em” (or get them to join you) approach: having done the same thing with jailbreakers Nicholas Allegra and Peter Hajas in previous years.

Ha ha. Never. Never I say. In all seriousness I think the focus will be on iOS 8 like everyone else is guessing. Until then, I’m staying status quo.
