Astounding GIF shows just how far the iPhone has come in 8 years

The iPhone recently celebrated its eighth birthday, and what better way to mark the occasion than with a mesmerizing animated GIF — showing the evolution of Apple’s mobile handset from the revolutionary but (now) small and slightly bulky device Steve Jobs unveiled in 2007, to the landmark iPhone 6 which racked up more than 10 million sales in its first weekend alone?

If you’re a long-time iPhone fan, or a relatively new user, it’s an astounding glimpse at just how far we’ve come in just a handful of iPhone iterations. To paraphrase The Simpsons, it’s hypnotic… almost like watching a lava lamp.

You can check out GIF profiles of the iPhone’s evolution (including front and back views) at PicClick.com.

iPhone 3G is still the best looking IMHO. Steve Jobs was totally correct about that form factor being the perfect size for one handed operation. I desperately want them to make a 6 series in the smaller/traditional format, the current sizes are too big for my taste.

iPhone 4/4s for me, perfect form, and oozes of luxury! If I can update the internals and have the same form factor that will be my forever phone.

Agreed, the 4/4S were works of art. And felt so satisfying in the hand. Just perfectly weighted. And the stainless steel-banded glass sandwich is so timeless. Just leaps and bounds better than any other smartphone of its time. Shame Apple had to move on.

I agree. I remember marvelling at the iPhone 4 design when it came out compared to my iPhone 3G. I however always loved the rounded edges of the 3G.

Why did the 4S get skinner to the 4 in the gif?
