Apple has hit back at claims that it is abusing its power in South Korea by forcing mobile carriers to pay the cost of advertising its devices.
The company said that its actions were fully justified, and that selling the iPhone in South Korea wasn’t just advantaging Apple, but also to local mobile carriers.

There are a bunch of reasons to remove the background from a photo. You might just hate the background — a perfect portrait ruined by crowds, or ugly construction work, or both. You may want to remove the background in order to extract the subject — maybe you’re doing some kind of Photoshop trick, or making a greetings card.
Whatever your reasons, it’s easy to do. Removing the background from an image used to be a nightmare. Now, you just need the right app. And if you’re a regular with our Cult of Mac photo how-tos, you probably have that app already.

Microsoft’s mobile operating system, Windows Phone, is officially dead.
After failing to compete with iOS and Android, Microsoft is now advising users of Windows Phone to go out and buy an iPhone before the end of the year.

Foxconn, Apple’s largest manufacturing partner, has cut 50,000 workers ahead of schedule as a result of weak iPhone demand.
The first cuts came last October, months before Foxconn typically scales back its workforce in preparation for slow season, according to a source familiar with the move. It is believed that Foxconn isn’t the only Apple supplier making cuts, either.

This year’s iPhone refresh will bring big upgrades for some of the handset’s most important features, according to a new rumor.
One tipster claims that we can look forward to an even better camera with 3x optical zoom, a bigger battery, faster wireless charging, and a more responsive screen.
The same is true for Screen Time. This feature tracks how long you spend using apps every day, and can help you limit that time. But you can also use Screen Time to password-protect any app on your iPhone or iPad.
Another small but significant reference to Apple’s long-awaited AirPower charging mat has been spotted this week, giving fans hope that the product is still in the pipeline after all.
AirPower is mentioned on an Apple product page for its new Smart Battery Case for iPhone XS. But what does it mean?
Nike is on a mission to kill shoelaces for good with its new pair of app-controlled sneakers, which made their official debut today.
Taking a page right out of Back to the Future II, Nike’s new Adapt BB self-lacing shoes pack wireless connectivity, and a custom motor and gear train, to give athletes a perfect fit without having to fuss with retying their laces.
Most of us don’t need that advice, but one Chinese man, aged just 25, is now bedridden with organ failure after selling his kidney to buy the latest Apple devices eight years ago.
Qualcomm previously won an iPhone ban in the country. Photo: Qualcomm
The recent court-appointed sales ban on certain iPhone models in Germany could be at risk. That’s thanks to a decision by a German court on Tuesday, who ruled against Qualcomm in its patent case against Apple.
The regional court in the city of Mannheim threw out the Qualcomm suit, claiming that the patent was not being violated due to Apple’s use of Qualcomm chips in its older iPhones. Qualcomm has said it plans to appeal.

Apple reportedly replaced a whopping 11 million iPhone batteries last year — 10 times as many as anticipated.
Apple CEO Tim Cook has already cited this as one of the reasons why new iPhone sales are slowing. It is believed the company expected to perform between 1 and 2 million replacements under its heavily-discounted $29 program.
Qualcomm and Apple's legal war has no end in sight. Photo: Qualcomm
Apple wanted to use Qualcomm’s LTE modems in the iPhone XS and iPhone XR this year, but according to Apple COO Jeff Williams, Qualcomm refused to sell Apple its chips due to their current legal disputes.
After using both Intel and Qualcomm modems in the 2017 iPhone lineup, Apple says it planned to use chips from both companies again on the 2018 iPhones. Qualcomm’s refusal to sell Apple chips forced Intel to scramble to make up for the extra production.

If you want to stream different tracks on different devices from Apple Music, you’ll need two subscriptions. It was previously possible to listen to one track on your iPhone while enjoying another on HomePod in a different room, but not anymore.
Apple says this was a bug — not a feature — and it has finally been fixed.
Dialog Semiconductor didn't make as much money as hoped. Photo: Ste Smith/Cult of Mac
Dialog Semiconductor, the European chipmaker that Apple has been working with since the first iPhone, has reported disappointing earnings for the fourth quarter of 2018.
The firm, which Apple invested $600 million in last year, rakes in about 75 percent of its revenue supplying power management chips for iOS devices. Dialog’s shares fell more than 3 percent with the earnings news.
The iPhone comes with some cool dynamic wallpapers — they’re the ones where blobs of color float around the screen like wax in a lava lamp. But did you know you can create your own Dynamic Wallpaper using your own Live Photos?

The era of using cables to charge your iPhone may finally be coming to an end.
During CES 2019, Ossia, a company that specializes in creating truly wireless charging solutions, debuted its first case for iPhone that can take radio waves out of the air and convert them into useable electricity.
Can Apple reinvigorate iPhone sales in China? Photo: Tim Cook/Weibo
As expected, Apple resellers have started cutting the price of the iPhone in China. Today, popular e-commerce platforms JD.com and Suning reduced the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone XR’s asking price — with some price tags dropping by as much as 22 percent.
For what it’s worth, the iPhone prices remain unchanged on Apple’s official website in China.

Expect to see an extra lens for each of the 2019 iPhone models, claims a new report from the Wall Street Journal. In the case of the iPhone XS and XS Max sequel, this will mean jumping from two to three lenses. In the case of the iPhone XR follow-up, it means moving from one to two lenses.
This report appears to back up another recent rumor, suggesting that the new top-tier iPhone will sport a series of camera lenses arranged in a triangle configuration.
Don't let this happen to you. Photo: Charlie Sorrel/Cult of Mac
Apple’s revenue is hurting this quarter. Part of that is down to China, but part of it is Apple’s own stupid fault. The iPhone is just too damn good.
Unlike most crappy Android junk, which slows down and falls apart almost as soon as you’ve opened the box, the iPhone lasts for years. Even if you, the original owner, replace it after just a couple of years, then it’s likely that you’ll hand it down to a friend of a family member who will enjoy it for a few more.
The iPhone is a great investment, then (for you, if not for share traders) but you can make it last a lot longer. Try these tips to make your iPhone last you for years.

Before Apple’s magical product pipeline pops out a plethora of new goodies this year, it might be good to take a minute to appreciate the insane number of products the iPhone-maker has come out with over the last 42 years.
Keeping tabs on all the products Apple comes out within a single year is hard enough, but some ambitious person has created a detailed graphic that shows everything Apple has ever made.

Slowing iPhone sales aren’t just bad news for Apple.
Foxconn, the company’s largest manufacturing partner, is also suffering as a result of weakening iPhone demand, with revenue for December falling 8.3 percent year-over-year.
It’s the first time Foxconn has experienced a drop in revenue in almost a year.
HSBC has previously said iPhone's days of massive growth are over. Photo: Apple
Apple stock seems to have stabilized after its steep decline in recent weeks, but HSBC analysts seemingly don’t think the worst is over just yet.
Having previously said that meaningful iPhone growth is “broadly over,” analysts for the bank have now lowered their Apple price target for a second time.

Apple has slashed the prices of certain iPhone models in China. Chinese iPhone vendors reportedly received the word from Apple that they can offer discounts on the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max.
Of these, the biggest price reduction amounts to around $66 off the price off the iPhone XR. Other iPhones are receiving price cuts of around $59.
There’s no need to buy new storage space for your iPhone — just free up what you already have. Photo: Charlie Sorrel/Cult of Mac
It’s happening again! You cheaped out and bought that 32GB iPhone or iPad a few years back, and it’s full up, again. But wait — before you go deleting your photos, or uninstalling apps at random until you recover enough space, take a look at this how-to. You might be able to recover tens of gigabytes from apps you’d totally forgotten about.
