Microsoft Edge for iOS now boasts instant web page translation.
The feature lets you visit your favorite foreign sites and enjoy them in your native tongue. It also gives you the option to quickly switch back to the site’s original language with little effort.
Apple needs to add these features. Photo: Matt Birchler
The grand unveiling of watchOS 6 is probably just three months away, but a cool new concept from Matt Birchler suggests some simple features that will hopefully get added in time for Apple Watch lovers.
In his annual watchOS concept, developer Matt Birchler lists all the ways Apple could make the Apple Watch platform even better. Most of the suggestions are pretty simple, such as always on watch faces, and would be easy for Apple to add. Hopefully, Apple’s software engineers are taking notes of these ideas.
Apple is serious about creating a foldable iPhone. Above, is a drawing for a patent Apple was granted last year. Photo: Apple
After being one of the first out of the gate with a folding smartphone, Samsung is trying to entice competitors — including Apple — to join the foldable future.
Samsung, which debuted the Galaxy Fold at its Unpacked event on Feb. 20, has reportedly sent some foldable display panel samples to Cupertino in hopes of attracting Apple as a client.
3D Touch can be awesome, or annoying. Photo: Charlie Sorrel/Cult of Mac
Apple may or may not be ready to euthanize 3D Touch. My view is that it sticks around, neglected and unloved, forever more. Like Dashboard on macOS. (Yes, Dashboard still exists.)
That would be a shame, as 3D Touch really is an excellent augmentation to a touchscreen device. It’s also quite tweakable. Here’s how to adjust how it works, and — if you really hate it — how to turn 3-D Touch off altogether.
There are a lot of reasons to switch to iPhone. Photo: Apple
Apple is expanding its “There’s More to iPhone” marketing campaign to more countries in Europe after launching it last year in Germany.
New pages have been created on Apple’s websites for France and the United Kingdom detailing how the iPhone is “more than the device in your hand.” Security, recycling and privacy are some of the topics covered by little blurbs that tout the iPhone’s superiority. There are also three new videos to go along with it.
You can’t watch these on Apple’s U.S. YouTube channel though:
Can you bring yourself to do it? Photo: Ste Smith/Cult of Mac
As much as I love my smartphone, there’s no doubt that they raise some problematic questions. From concerns about social media’s impact on mental health to the very real chance of being so glued to our devices that we miss what’s happening around us, the abundance of connected gadgets has caused plenty of problems.
Can you put down your iPhone, iPad, and other devices for 24 hours? This weekend’s National Day of Unplugging challenges you to do just that. From sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday, it’s intended as a 24-hour global respite from technology. Can you bring yourself to take part?

Reduced iPhone demand in China has hit Foxconn employees’ salaries and benefits, according to a new report.
A number of workers say that their salaries were reduced at the end of last year, due to a smaller number of working hours available. There has also not been the usual Foxconn recruitment drive, which was previously an expected part of the iPhone manufacturing process.
With foldable smartphones becoming the hot new trend for 2019, iPhone fans are wondering when we’ll see something from Apple. It’s likely to be a while before a foldable iPhone hits the market, but there’s no question Apple is looking into it.
The company’s latest patent application details how it might prevent a foldable smartphone from breaking in cold weather.
iPhone sales have had a tough time in China. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
Slowing iPhone sales in China was a major concern for Apple. However, things may be back on the upswing, claims UBS analyst Timothy Arcuri.
According to Arcuri’s latest note to investors, Apple is clearing inventory in the country. This is partially thanks to price reductions. While it would be foolish to suggest that there won’t be more struggles, it seems that the worst could be behind Apple.
Your old iPhone could be worth a small fortune. Photo: Killian Bell/Cult of Mac
So, you’ve decided you just have to have Samsung’s brand new Galaxy S10. Or maybe even the exciting new Galaxy Fold. But how are you going to pay for your shiny new upgrade? It certainly won’t be cheap.
You can start by selling your old iPhone to Cult of Mac. We typically pay more than most buyback services, which means getting your hands on Samsung’s latest flagship could be a lot more affordable than you think.
AirMessage bridges the gap between iMessage and Android. Photo: AirMessage
Android lovers can finally bust out of the green bubble life without owning an iPhone.
Thanks to a new app that brings iMessage to Android, you can now enjoy one of Apple’s best features even if you don’t have an iOS device. It’s not a perfect solution and you’ll need a Mac but it’s better than any of the other workarounds we’ve seen.
Is that a folding iPhone? Or a folding iPad? Photo: Foldable News
At this week’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, phone-makers are demonstrating their folding phones. These range from the laughable (Samsung) to the desirable (Huawei), but none of them is really plausible. Why? Because nobody is going to buy a folding phone. Not now, and not in the future. At best they will be a niche product, like ruggedized laptops are now, for example.
No. The folding phone will probably never happen. But what about foldable tablets?
iOS 12.2 adds even more goodies for iPhone and iPad. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
iOS 12 is proving to be Apple’s most widely adopted software updates for iPhone and iPad in years.
Apple published its latest adoption percentages for iOS 12 today revealing that 80% of all iOS devices in the world are now running iOS 12, far outpacing iOS 11’s adoption last year.
Sprint plans to launch its 5G network in select U.S. cities this May.
Customers with compatible devices, such as the new Galaxy S10 5G, will initially get to enjoy faster data in Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, and Kansas City. Other cities will be added to the roster “in the first half of 2019.”
Apple continued its run of bokeh-related iPhone ads over the weekend. In its new “Depth Control” ad, a jealous partner blurs a handsome male co-worker out of a photo of his girlfriend/wife, using the depth of field function.
Come to think of it, that sounds a lot less funny in writing than it comes across on screen. As a slice of everyday iPhone use, though, it certainly raised a smile. Check it out below.
Oh look, another Facebook controversy. Photo: Ste Smith/Cult of Mac
Deleting your Facebook account isn’t enough to stop some apps from sending deeply personal information about you to the social network.
The Wall Street Journal found a wide range of apps that send personal information to Facebook even if you don’t have an account. Health apps and real estate apps were discovered sending a lot of information to Facebook and the type of data might surprise you.
Samsung has beaten Apple to the foldable smartphone, and it could have a sneaky trick up its sleeve to prevent the iPhone-maker from catching up quickly.
Analysts expect Samsung to hold off on selling its Infinity Flex displays to delay a foldable iPhone. It’s unlikely Apple would be able to source flexible OLED displays elsewhere.
Radio is still remarkably rad. Photo: Charlie Sorrel/Cult of Mac
Yes, the radio.
Some phones, and some old iPods — the clip-on Nano, for example — have real radio receivers built in. They can pick up over-the-air AM and FM waves, and play them, just like you were in a car from the olden days. The iPhone and iPad, though, have never had working radio tuners. But thanks to internet streaming, it doesn’t matter. You can listen to live radio anywhere, using an app.
Today we’ll see one super-simple app that works a lot like an old radio, and another app that I don’t really like, but that does pretty much anything you could want in a radio-streaming app.
Bag yours before they're all gone. Photo: Ste Smith/Cult of Mac
Apple has joined forces with Alipay in an effort to boost iPhone sales in China.
iPhone fans can now bag one of the company’s latest handsets with up to two years of interest-free finance. The loan allows customers to swap the costly upfront fee for much more affordable monthly payments. It’s available on purchases of 4,000 yuan (approx. $595) or more.
Apple no longer discloses exact iPhone sales, and that might be for the best.
New data suggests the company’s smartphone business suffered its worst decline in nearly three years over the 2018 holiday period. Apple still managed to be the second-best seller, however.
Target stores are now accepting Apple Pay. Photo: Apple
The number of Apple Pay users continues to climb, but the country with the slowest adoption is the United States.
Year over year figures show a 135 percent increase in Apple Pay users, a meteoric climb likely fueled when Apple added peer-to-peer payments at the beginning of 2018.
Update: The latest beta of iOS 12.2 is now available to the public, not just developers.
Apple just released the third beta build of iOS 12.2 to developers this morning, bringing a bunch of fixes and new features to the iPhone and iPad.
iOS 12.2 beta 3 arrived just over two weeks after developers received the last build. There are also new betas out for tvOS 12.2 and watchOS 5.2 to go with the macOS 10.4.4 beta that came out yesterday.

The serious photographer has made peace with the iPhone and how it has turned everyone into a photographer.
But Apple’s introduction of bokeh to the photographic novice has caused some heartburn, thanks to an ad featuring two mothers who turn bokeh into a verb.
Certain iPhone models could potentially be blocked from sale in the U.S. Photo: Qualcomm
Qualcomm has ramped up its efforts against Apple as part of the long-running battle between the two tech companies.
The chip maker has asked U.S. trade regulators to reverse a previous judge’s ruling. This would allow it to block the import of certain iPhone models into the United States.
Your favorite apps could soon be available on any Apple device. Photo: Apple
Apple plans to make it easy for developers to merge iOS and macOS apps into one by 2021, according to a new report.
The project, dubbed “Marzipan,” hopes to encourage development and boost App Store revenue. It will start with a new software development kit that will let developers port their iPad apps to Mac later this year.
