Ed Hardy has been writing full-time about tech for 25 years, and using it for much longer than that. His intro to Apple was a Macintosh SE/30 (which he still has), but now he uses a 13-inch iPad Pro as his primary computer.
That's because he's a "tablet first" type of guy. Rather than use a Macbook, he connects a keyboard case to the iPad. And instead of a desktop Mac, he connects his tablet to a 27-inch display and full-size keyboard. (So don't try to tell him that everyone has to use a Mac to be productive.)
Before coming to Cult of Mac, Ed wrote for NotebookReview, TabletPCReview and Brighthand, as well as other sites.
It's too late for many people to have a shiny new iPhone 14 Pro under their Christmas tree. Photo: Apple
There are going to be many sad Apple fans this Christmas. An iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max ordered today won’t arrive until after Christmas – six weeks from now.
Problems at a giant iPhone assembly plant in China mean the supply of the two iPhone 14 Pro models is falling far behind demand.
How much would you pay for a used pair of shoes? A few bucks, probably. What if they were owned by Steve Jobs? The amount you might be willing to put down surely goes up quite a bit. But would it go up to almost $220,000?
That’s what a pair of Birkenstocks owned by the Apple co-founder sold for over the weekend.

A proposed class-action lawsuit claims Apple applications, including the App Store, surreptitiously track users. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
A class-action lawsuit filed in California alleges that, “Apple’s assurances and promises regarding privacy are utterly false.”

The Mac Pro still runs on Intel. It's overdue for Apple silicon... whatever the chip gets named. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
At the launch of Apple silicon in 2020, the Mac-maker committed itself to a two-year transition away from Intel processors. Today marks the first day of year three of that transformation but the Mac Pro still uses Intel chips. Apple missed its deadline.
There has not even been a mention from Apple of a replacement macOS workstation with an M-series processor. A few leaked details are all we have.

Never find yourself without an iPhone charger if you add inCharge X to your keychain. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
It’s happened to all of us. Your iPhone battery is on empty and there are plenty of chargers around but no Lightning cable. The same thing can happen with a iPad and even a Mac. The inCharge X from Rolling Square is just what you need. It’s tiny enough for you to take it everywhere, but adaptable enough to enable almost any type of Apple device to get power from almost any charger.
Rolling Square also makes inCharge X Max, which is just as flexible but with a 5-foot cable built in.
I tested both. Here’s why I think they’re brilliant.

Colorado just became the third U.S. state to support digital driver’s licenses and IDs stored in an iPhone’s Wallet app. Residents of the state can now show their handset instead of a physical card in many situations where ID is required.
Apple launched its digital ID initiative back in 2021, but adoption is moving slowly. Still, multiple states have committed.

Battery life is an important consideration in any handset, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max solidly outlasts two Android flagship devices in a real world battery test. The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and Google Pixel 7 weren’t even close.

Stage Manager isn't perfect but it doesn't deserve all the criticism being heaped on it. Image: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
The new Stage Manager multitasking system is Apple’s answer to requests for floating app windows on iPad. It’s drawn a lot of criticism, much of which is undeserved.
I use the new system all day every day. Here’s why there’s a lot to like in Stage Manager, although there are undoubtedly some problems, too.

And those who are part of the iOS beta program can get access even earlier.

I tested the wireless audio adapter with AirPods and other headphones, as well as a variety of audio sources. Here’s why I’m quite pleased with it.
