Ed Hardy has been writing full-time about tech for 25 years, and using it for much longer than that. His intro to Apple was a Macintosh Classic II (which he still has), but now he uses a 13-inch iPad Pro as his primary computer. He’s written for NotebookReview, TabletPCReview, and Brighthand, as well as other sites.
Denzel Washington is up for the Best Actor Oscar for his role in The Tragedy of Macbeth, now streaming on Apple TV+. Photo: Apple TV+
The nominations are out for the 94th Academy Awards, and Apple TV+ films are up for six Oscars. Two movies from Apple’s streaming service attracted the attention of the Academy: CODA and The Tragedy of Macbeth.
Both films have already garnered a bevy of awards and nomimations.
Belkin’s Portable Wireless Charger Pad is a MagSafe charger and desktop stand in one. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
Belkin found a way to improve on Apple’s MagSafe charging puck for iPhone. Both charge equally fast, but Apple’s lies flat, while Belkin’s includes a built-in kickstand. Plus, the third-party accessory maker put in a much longer cable. And these are just some of the benefits of the (deep breath) Belkin Boost↑Charge Pro Portable Wireless Charger Pad with MagSafe 15W.
I put the wireless charger through a round of tests. It came through with flying colors.
The SEC has been asked to look into whether Apple lied about not using NDAs as concealment clauses. Photo: SEC
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is being urged to look into Apple’s claim that it doesn’t use nondisclosure agreements to prevent its employees from talking about alleged incidents of harassment and discrimination.
The request comes from a collection of state treasurers who point out that activists accuse Apple of using NDAs for exactly this purpose.

A Colorado woman was rescued from a kidnapper after police tracked down her iPad at a motel in another state.
Apple devices can be connected to the Find My network, allowing their owners to locate them if they’re misplaced. But the feature has other uses… obviously.

This is the 2020 iPhone SE 2. And it’s probably what the 2022 iPhone SE will also look like. Photo: Apple
The third-generation iPhone SE will have a few improvements over the current version, but MagSafe won‘t be one of them, according to a new report coming from Asia.
At this point, it appears the major changes in the upcoming iOS handset will be speed related.
Order from Apple Stores around the world and you’ll be waiting weeks to get the 10.2-inch iPad. Photo: Apple
Demand for some iPad models outstrips supply. And the result is customers waiting a month or more to receive their tablet. Buyers in some countries who place an order now will be waiting until March to receive it.
The problem is a shortage of the secondary processors used in the mobile computers. Apple just can’t get as many as it needs.
The latest Innocn monitor makes a fine mid-size TV. Or put it on your desk and get to work. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
If you want a monitor for your Mac, let me suggest the 27-inch Innocn one that just launched. It has a 4K resolution, offers 1.07B+ colors and high contrast. The screen is suited for Photoshop, gaming, or watching TV and film.
I tested the + 27-inch 4K Computer Monitor 27C1U in my home office, and it’s some serious eye candy. Here’s why I think you’ll agree.
‘The Tragedy of Macbeth’ is drawing a big audience for this murderous classic from the Bard. Photo: Apple TV+
The Tragedy of Macbeth was the third most watched movie on all the streaming services in the United States during January. And it was only available for half the month.
The Apple TV+ version starring starring Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand is also getting rave reviews from critics.

The long, long wait for YouTube picture-in-picture support for iPhone could be near its end. Graphic: YouTube
YouTube might be about to follow through on its promise to allow all iPhone users to watch video from its application in a small window while another app is open. The feature is already available for YouTube Premium subscribers, but the testing period expires soon. That suggests picture-in-picture is about to become available for all iPhone users.
When it finally launches, PiP will make YouTube videos easier to enjoy because they’ll allow people to use their iPhone to multitask while also watching.

What if the next Mac looked like the original Macintosh? Concept: Ian Zelbo
Suppose Apple made a Mac that harks back to its early days. A concept designer floated the idea of a computer with the latest tech, including an M2 processor, but in a casing that mimics the original Macintosh from 1984.
It’s certainly a fun idea, especially to those who remember those days. But the practicality is questionable.
The Apple Store in Canberra Centre was burglarized by some fairly incompetent thieves. Photo: Apple
A couple of scofflaws broke into an Australian Apple Store and made of with thousands of dollars in computers. But the hapless burglars — allegedly including a 16-year-old boy — were soon tracked down by police.
They got caught because they apparently made nearly every possible mistake.
The global chip shortage hit Apple in the iPads last quarter. Screenshot: Apple
The lone dark spot in Apple’s otherwise bright Q4 earnings report was iPad. And analysts are out with their estimates of how bad the damage was, with Apple’s quarterly tablet shipments possibly dropping as much as 21% year over year.
The only good news for Apple is that the drop off wasn‘t because of low demand. It couldn’t get the necessary parts to make sufficient devices to meet demand.
The FAA worked out a deal that will let us stop talking about C-band 5G and airports. Photo: Miguel Á. Padriñán/Pexels
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration worked out a compromise that will let AT&T and Verizon deploy their new C-band 5G near airports without it interfering with instruments on airplanes.
While that’s good news for iPhone users who want fast cellular-wireless access everywhere, the agreement also means that the new version of 5G still won‘t be offered very near airports.
Here are some, but not all, of the new emoji coming soon to iPhone and iPad. Image: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
Soon you’ll be able to use an emoji to show that your battery is low. Or that you’re melting, are feeling ambivalent or patriotic, or getting teary-eyed. This is because the crop of fresh emoji approved in fall 2021 will debut when iOS 15.4 does.
