Samsung Enlists Witnesses From Motorola’s Trial To Help Them Against Apple

By

applevssamsung

After two weeks of Apple laying down their evidence that Samsung has violated their patents and completely ripped-off the iPhone and iPad, Samsung is now going on the defensive in the Apple vs Samsung trial. So far, Samsung’s biggest strategic defense has been to flip the trial around and claim that Apple has infringed on their standard essential patents.

To help their case, Samsung has listed two expert witnesses to justify their claims that Apple should pay up to 2.5% in royalties. One of the experts – David J. Teece, a professor at the University of California, Berkley, was recently used by Motorola in their case against Microsoft related to H.264 patents.

Here’s What The New 13-inch MacBook Air Looks Like When X-Rayed [Image]

By

xray

When your dad’s a radiologist you probably get to see all kinds of neat crap get x-rayed, because hey, why not take an x-ray of those apples and carrots before you put them in a blend? Maybe the radiation will make you into a super mutant. You’re the boss of the magical x-ray machine and can do whatever you want.

That’s kind of what happened to one Redditor. They ordered a new MacBook Air, but when it arrived their dad didn’t tell him it arrived. Instead he took it to his lab, x-rayed it, and gave his son the x-ray to tell him that his new Mac was finally here. Ain’t that sweet?

iPad Mini? iPad Air? What Should Apple Call The Newer Smaller iPad? [Let’s Talk]

By

ipad

Dude, what is Apple going to call this newer, thinner, smaller iPad they’re about to launch? iPad Junior? iBook? iPad Mini? iPad Air? iPad 3? I have no idea anymore. Last night I went to bed completely confident that Apple was going to probably call it something simple like “iPad Mini,” but then I woke up to some new renders of the smaller iPad and talk about how Apple might call it the iPad Air.

Now I’m second guessing the whole iPad Mini thing, and leaning towards iPad Air. I really want Apple to call it an iBook, just because I want to read iBooks on my iBook, but that’s probably not going to happen. Are there some better possible names for a smaller iPad? What do you think Apple should call the “iPad Mini.” I need to know!

The Items Stolen From Jobs House Included Steve’s Wallet With One Dollar In It

By

jobshouse

Earlier this morning Cult of Mac reported that 35-year-old homeless man, Kariem McFarlin, broke into Steve Jobs’ house and stole more than $60,000 worth of computers and personal items.

We now have a list of items McFarlin stole, which includes a lot of Apple hardware, and some personal items, like Steve Jobs’ wallet, that still had his license, credit card, and the $1 annual salary he earned as CEO of Apple.

Do You Plan To Switch Carriers When You Buy The New iPhone? [Let’s Talk]

By

Have you been waiting for the next iPhone?
Which carrier will you run this bad boy on?

My contract with AT&T is finally up, which might be the most glorious moment of my smartphone owning days. I’ve been jealous of my friend’s using their iPhones on Verizon for over a year, and now I can join them and maybe get some better service. Or go to Sprint. Hell, I might even go to Virgin Mobile and save some fat stacks of cheddar on their pre-paid plans.

I don’t know exactly what I’ll do, but I’m free, and that’s the important part. But what about you guys? Do you plan to switch carriers when the new iPhone comes out? Is the grass really greener in other cellular pastures? Or is it pretty much all the same? I’d love to hear your thoughts or stories about switching carriers in the comments.

Don’t Worry, iOS Encryption Is So Secure Even The NSA Sucks At Hacking It

By

iphonelock

Your iPhone contains a whole lotta information about your personal life. You got your bank apps, email, text messages, phone calls, browsing history, plus all those embarrassing songs you listen to on Spotify you don’t want people to know about.

You don’t expect to get hardcore encryption security on a tiny iPhone, and when the iPhone was first released in 2007 you didn’t. Huge security holes allowed  hackers to easily take over the device, but Apple learned from their mistakes, and now your iPhone is like a freaking Fort Knox for data. Even the NSA is having a hard time breaking iPhone encryption, and it’s frustrating the hell out them.

Your iPhone Can Now Test If Your Delicious Organic Beef Is Really Organic With This Accessory

By

lapka

Scientific instruments usually look crazy weird and aren’t designed to be user-friendly for the every day, non-scientist man. Lapka is looking to change that with their beautifully designed, semi-affordable Personal Environmental Monitor.

Lapka allows iPhone users to attach four different measuring instruments which can test for radiation, nitrates, humidity, and electromagnetic frequency, so you can create a perfect climate in your home, make sure your food is truly organic, find the perfect spot for your router, and make sure you’re not going to get cancer.

This Incredible Vintage Apple Collection Is Probably The Biggest One Outside The U.S. [Gallery]

By

Andrei Antonov is a huge Apple fan and has been an avid collector the last three decades. He’s got a certified crap-ton of old Apple machines, Newtons, Pippins, even random peripherals and Steve Jobs figurines. The guy has seriously got so much Apple stuff that he used it all to launch the Museum of Apple Technology where visitors can come in and actually touch the machines and play games like Prince of Persia and Mario on the oldest Macs you can find.

It’s an impressive collection to say the least, and some people think it might be the biggest collection of Apple hardware outside the U.S. Who are we to doubt them? Take a look at the pictures and see for yourself.

Has Mountain Lion Worsened Your Battery Life? [Let’s Talk]

By

sleepy

It seems like every time Apple releases a new version of iOS the battery life on iPhones would drop significantly. Now with a the newest version of OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, some users are reporting a significant decrease in battery life on their MacBooks after they upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion.

Our buddy Chris Foresman at Ars Technica looked into the issue and found that his new Retina MacBook Pro has lost about 38% of its battery capacity, which is pretty huge. Have you seen anything similar in your own use of Mountain Lion? What about any other bugs that Apple needs to fix immediately? We want to hear about it in the Cult of Mac Forums.

Here are the 10 best Mac Guy memes from the contest:

Court Documents Show Samsung Tablet Sales Are Only 5% Of The iPad’s

By

samsung

We’ve always been curious about just how Samsung managed to sell 2million Galaxy Tabs. I mean, do you actually know anyone that bought one? Have you seen one in the wild? Because we haven’t. Yet in 2010 Samsung reported that they had shipped over 2 million units.

Turns out that there’s a huge discrepancy over the way Samsung reports “units shipped” and the amount of units that were actually sold. In some new court documents for the Apple vs Samsung trial, both companies had to reveal their sales figures for each device in the case. Turns out that Samsung really only sold 262,000 Galaxy Tabs in 2010, and their other sales figures were hugely disappointing as well compared to the iPad.

Apple Retail Stores Will Now Price Match iPhone Discounts From Other Retailers

By

apple_iphone_price_match

The new iPhone will be released in September and already we’ve seen a couple carriers and retailers drop the price on the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, and iPhone 3GS below the standard contract price.

Apple’s website is still selling at the standard prices, but according to some informers, Apple Store employees have now been authorized to price match discounts from other retail locations.

Do You Really Want/Need An Apple iWatch? [Let’s Talk]

By

iwatch2

You’re probably aware that tons of people wear their iPod Nano as a watch, even thought it’s really a great. But what if it were better? Would you actually want it?

The Pebble ePaper Watch was the most successful Kickstarter project of all time because it lets you get notifications from your phone on your cute little wristwatch. Do you think Apple might jump all over that idea and release a similar product of their own via the iPod Nano? Plus, iOS 6 Beta 4 has a new Bluetooth Sharing feature that might let you pair your iPhone 5 with a new iPod Nano (iWatch).

Is there a point in getting phone notifications and texts on your watch when you can just pull your slender iPhone out your pocket to do all that plus check the time and play Temple Run while walking down the street? I dunno, but I’m interested to hear what you guys think. Do you really really want Apple to release an iWatch style product?

Google Agrees To Pay Largest FTC Fine Ever For Bypassing Safari Security Settings

By

googleftc

The Federal Trade Commission released information this morning that because of their misrepresentation to users of Apple’s Safari Internet browser, Google has agreed to pay a record $22.5 million civil penalty to settle charges from the FTC.

The $22.5 million fine is the largest in FTC history. Earlier this year an investigation found that Google had placed advertising cookies on the computers of Safari users who visited sites on Google’s DoubleClick ad network. Users were told by Google that they would automatically be opted out of the tracking, but Google kept tracking them anyway.

StoryBundle Might Be The Most Interesting Thing To Happen To eBooks Since The iBookstore

By

storybundle1

You need to read more. It’s just a fact. Everyone could stand to read a few more books a year and watch a few less GIFs on the internet. Isn’t that why you bought your iPad? Because you said you’d read more if you had an “eReader”? No? Well you should anyway.

To inject your life with more literature you’ll need to buy a lot of books. They’re not cheap, and they kind of suck to buy because, depending on which digital store you buy them from, they’re laden with DRM. Don’t let that get you down though because there’s some really great news today on the eBook front. Storybundle.com just launched their cool new website, and it’s pretty much the neatest thing to happen to eBooks this year.

Mike Daisey Retooled His Entire Monologue To Finally Be Factually Accurate [Updated]

By

Mike Daisey performing "The Agony & Ecstasy Of Steve Jobs"

Mike Daisey’s life has been pretty crazy the past 12 months. He shot into fame with his monologue The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs, which sparked the public’s interest in Chinese working conditions. Woz even saw the show and cried.

Then word came out that many parts of Daisey’s play were fabricated and an unrelenting storm of excrement rained down on Daisey. Now he’s back, and his play The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs has been completely updated to version 2.0 so people will stop accusing him of lying while telling some of the vital truths behind Apple’s manufacturing process.

Would You Be Angry If Apple Introduced A Smaller Dock Connector This Fall? [Let’s Talk]

By

connector

The writing is on the wall my friends. Apple is going to announce a sleek and beautiful new iPhone in September, only instead of using the traditional 30-pin connector, it’s going to use something a lot smaller. Like, “maybe only 9-pins” smaller. Apple might sell an adaptor so your old iPod speaker docks can play nice with the new connector, but will that satisfy you?

Does the news make you sad or angry? Or maybe you’re like, “Smaller dock connector? Hells yeah! Now all my iDevices are going to be slimmer and cooler.” I dunno. You tell me. We want to hear how you feel about the smaller dock connector and whether or not you’re worried it will ruin all of your Apple accessories.

See What Apps Will Look Like On The iPhone 5’s Bigger Screen With This Easy Hack

By

4-inch iPhone concept

The new iPhone is coming out and supposedly it’s going to have a 4-inch screen. Rather than making the device wider, Apple’s just going to add more pixels to the top of the screen for a bigger display, which might be pretty cool, but how how are your favorite apps going to look once they’re all stretched out like that?

Well if you have access to Apple’s developer tools (which you can totally download for free by the way), then you can run the iOS Simulator and this quick hack to see for yourself what apps will look like at a display resolution of 640 x 1136.

Here, try it out and let us know what you think.

Want To Get Paid $625 Per Hour? Just Testify In The Apple vs Samsung Trial

By

applemoney

To defend their allegations that Samsung has been shamelessly copying their products, Apple has had to bring in a few outside experts to testify in the Apple vs Samsung trial. So far the expert witnesses have included people in the fields of product design, graphic design, and marketing.

So how much have they made total? About $205,000 between the three of them to endure the pains of lawyers asking them the like a billion questions. Here’s how much each expert has been paid so far –

Sprint CEO Says Buying The iPhone Was Worth $15.5Billion

By

sprint

Even though selling the iPhone can potentially bring carriers a huge influx of new customers, selling Apple’s treasured phone isn’t cheap. Before they were able to bring the iPhone to their network, Sprint had to give Apple $15.5 billion in committed purchases for four years, which sounded pretty crazy at the time.

In a recent interview, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse explained that committing to the iPhone was a huge risk, but ultimately, betting against Apple could have been disastrous.

All These Incredible Olympic Photos Were Taken With An iPhone 4S [Gallery]

By

Women's 200m backstroke semi-final 2, SW012

If you’re a professional photographer going to the London to cover the Olympics, you’d probably want to take a huge DSLR and a couple thousand dollars worth of extra lenses to get the best pictures possible, right? Wrong.

Dan Chung is covering the Olympics for The Guardian, only instead of using his fancy pants DSLR, Chung is capturing the entire event using only his iPhone 4S and some binoculars. He edits the photos using Snapseed before uploading them to the web, and the results are pretty impressive. Take a look for yourself.
