iWatch could cost as much as $400 for highest end model

By

Yet another iWatch concept.
Yet another iWatch concept.

Apple could charge an upwards of $400 for its highest end iWatch, according to Recode. Apple executives have reportedly “discussed charging around $400 for the company’s new wearable device,” although there will also be different models set at lower prices.

Does that mean the top-of-the-line iWatch will actually cost $400? Not necessarily.

Grey hull of the iPhone 6 shows off striking new antenna design

iPhone-6-Battery-Door-04

When you start to see assembled iPhone 6 devices basically powered on, you know it’s getting late in the rumor mill cycle. Basically every part imaginable for Apple’s forthcoming smartphone has leaked ahead of its September 9th unveiling.

Now hi-quality shots of what looks like a near finished iPhone 6 hull have surfaced. They show the defined antenna lines on the back as seen in previous parts, but this time they’ve been colored to look more at home on the phone.

Why the iWatch will likely be the iPhone’s sidekick at Sept 9th unveiling

It makes sense for the iWatch to be the iPhone's Robin... at first.
It makes sense for the iWatch to be the iPhone's Robin... at first.

Apple sent out press invites for its September 9th event earlier today, the date when the iPhone 6 and iWatch will reportedly be unveiled.

Corroborating an earlier story by Recode, Bloomberg’s own sources are confirming that new iPhones and an Apple wearable will share the stage.

Given that Apple has promised new “product categories” this year akin to the original iPhone and iPad launch, it seems odd that there won’t be a separate Apple event dedicated to its wearable strategy. Sharing an event gives Apple the opportunity to pitch the iWatch—or whatever it’s called—as an accessory to the iPhone. And that could ultimately be better for Apple’s bottom line.

CloudApp touts itself as your “clipboard in the cloud,” and today it received a major update.

In case you’re unfamiliar, CloudApp is a menubar app for the Mac that can upload just about anything copied to your clipboard with a keyboard shortcut. It then creates a shortened URL for sharing and lets you track how many hits the link has received.

CloudApp 3.0 is now the easiest way to make animated GIFs on the Mac, thanks to a new feature called Cloud Motion. The CloudApp team has also revamped its pricing for paid plans along with a brand new way for teams to collaborate using the app.

“We’ve been hard at work since Apple announced the new and exciting extensions and custom keyboards available in iOS 8,” said Smilie in a preview of their new keyboard layout. “TextExpander touch 3, coming on the heels of iOS 8 this fall, includes a TextExpander keyboard which can expand snippets in any app on the iPhone or iPad, including built-in apps such as Mail and Safari.”

Instagram explains the cool tech behind new Hyperlapse app

By

Hyperlapse

Yesterday Instagram released Hyperlapse, its new app for making time lapse videos. The obvious benefit of time lapsing footage is that you can cram more into a 15-second clip, but the videos also end up looking really cool.

Hyperlapse takes the time lapse concept to the next level by encouraging you to move around while you shoot. That ends up opening the doors for all kinds of creative shots. You’d normally have to pay thousands of dollars for video gear to make the HD footage Hyperlapse can, but now anyone can do it with an iPhone for free.

The engineers at Instagram have shared what went into making the app. Here are a few takeaways:

Judge Lucy Koh has denied Apple’s second attempt at banning certain Samsung phones. After Apple won its second major patent infringement case against Samsung earlier this year, it requested that a permanent injunction be placed on nine Samsung devices in the U.S.

Just like when Apple was denied a sales ban after its 2011 landmark victory against Samsung, Koh has not granted the second request. This time around, the ruling signals that Apple and Samsung’s court disputes are indeed settling down.

Apple is assembling a wearables and fashion dream team

By

For a company as secretive as Apple, one of the few ways you can learn anything about what it has planned next is to see who it has been hiring. High-profile hires say a lot about where Apple’s priorities are for the future.

Looking back at the hires Apple has brought on over the last year reveals something pretty obvious: it’s assembling a wearables and fashion dream team.

Google is gunning hard at Apple’s iWork apps and Microsoft’s Office 365 suite. Docs, Sheets and Slides are not only completely free, but they have offline mode and the ability to convert and edit Microsoft Office files.

Sapphire production for iPhone 6 won’t hit full speed until 2015

By

iPhone-6-ecran-bordures-08

The uncertainty about iPhone 6 availability this fall is largely centered around one component: sapphire. The ultra-durable material is rumored to be in not only two new iPhone models this fall, but the iWatch as well.

Apple’s only sapphire partner is GT Advanced Technologies with a relatively small operation in Arizona. According to another report, GTAT’s sapphire production, particularly for the 5.5-inch iPhone 6, will he heavily constrained until 2015.

Estimote makes iBeacons in little polygon shapes with cool colors and custom designs. Designed to communicate over low-energy Bluetooth, Estimote Beacons can be used to alert nearby smartphones of a specific deal when they enter a shop, for example.

But what if different items for sale in that shop had their own iBeacons? That’s the vision behind what Estimote is calling Stickers, small adhesive sensors that can be put just about anywhere. As more and more companies adopt iBeacon technology, expect to start seeing these kinds of little beacons everywhere you go.

One of the most famous speeches by Steve Jobs is the commencement address he gave at Stanford University in 2005. The 22-minute speech is definitely worth watching if you’re an Apple fan.

Apple has made small and subtle references to Jobs in its software before, and now another easter egg has been discovered in Pages for Mac. Jobs’ entire commencement speech is hidden within a text file in Pages, and it’s easy to pull up.

New leak compares 5.5-inch iPhone 6 to 4.7-inch shell

By

Leaked-iPhone-6-5.5-inch

A shell for the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 has reportedly leaked right out of the Asian supply chain, and it has been compared with one of the 4.7-inch iPhone parts that have been making the rounds.

The larger 5.5-inch shell looks very similar to its smaller counterpart, as expected. The design features the same antenna lines and embedded Apple logo casing seen in previous iPhone 6 leaks.
