Allen Paltrow was a 10 year old boy when he was invited to attent the grand opening of Apple’s flagship retail store in New York City. He was invited by Apple’s co-founder and then-CEO, Steve Jobs.

How did Allen earn such an invitation? He showed his enthusiasm for Apple by shaving the Apple logo into the back of his head. A chain of events led to him having one of the most amazing experiences of his life.

Earthquake in New York City Evacuates Apple Store on Fifth Avenue [Photo]

“Did you feel that?” That was the question many were asking on the east coast a couple of hours ago. A 5.8-magnitude earthquake sent tremors through New York and the New England area this afternoon, with the epicenter located in Virginia.

9to5Mac has obtained a photo of Apple’s evacuated flagship store on Fifth Avenue in New York City. Once the quake hit, Apple employees and customers were evacuated to Central Park while the store was checked for damages.

Hopefully no one was harmed during today’s earthquake. Stay safe out there, folks.

Sprint to Offer the iPhone 5 this October [Rumor]

According to The Wall Street Journal, Sprint will offer Apple’s iPhone come this October. Currently, the iPhone is only available on AT&T and Verizon. An AT&T/T-Mobile merger is currently in the process of being approved by the FCC, so that leaves Sprint as the lonely, iPhone-less kid in the corner.

According to a new report, Sprint will soon be able to share in Apple’s ‘magical’ smartphone when the iPhone 5 is launched in October.

Apple’s iPhone Production to Double in Second Half of 2011 [Report]

Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 5 alongside a cheaper, possibly retooled iPhone 4 in the coming months, with industry reports indicating a September or October launch.

According to Apple’s manufacturing partners overseas, Apple is drastically ramping up iPhone production for the second half of 2011, with an estimated 58 million units expected to ship. With the continued sales of iPhone 4 models alongside whatever is announced this Fall, it looks like the last two business quarters of 2011 will be record-breaking for Apple.

In case you needed any more confirmation: yes, the iPhone is doing very well in the US. Research firm NPD has published its Mobile Phone Track report for Q2 of 2011, and the iPhone 4 and 3GS tank as the top two best-selling smartphones.

Even during the current economy, consumers are still opting for the Apple tax. What’s even more interesting is that the iPhone 3GS is the second best-selling smartphone, and the 3GS has been on the market for over two years.

Intel: Apple Switching MacBooks To ARM Is A Very Real And Scary Threat For Us

It’s been a long-standing rumor that Apple will switch to its own, proprietary ‘A’ series of ARM-based chips in its MacBook and desktop machines. Currently, Apple relies heavily on Intel to provide processors for its computers — the MacBook specifically.

In terms of the MacBook, a recent interview with the director of Intel’s Ultrabook group shows that Intel sees Apple switching to ARM processors as a very real threat. There could very well be a day when all Apple products run on the same series of chips — and that series will be exclusively made by Apple.

Apple Field-Testing iOS 5 Devices With LTE, Could Launch With iPad 3 in 2012 [Rumor]

A slew of rumors have surfaced this weekend that point towards Apple currently field-testing 4G iDevices in the wild running the latest builds of iOS 5. LTE code has been uncovered in recent beta builds of iOS 5, and speculation is that Apple could release the iPad 3 with LTE capability in early 2012.

Reports have already come out that Apple is testing LTE iPhones in the wild, and it was recently uncovered that AT&T was installing 4G equipment in Apple stores. Will we see the first 4G device from Apple in early 2012?

Mac sales continue on a steep upward trend, with Needham analyst Charlie Wolf weighing in on Apple’s Mac sales for June of 2011. As Wolf notes, the Mac saw its 21st consecutive quarter in which shipment growth for the Mac surpassed that of the entire PC market.

Overall, the Mac saw an astounding 14.6% growth in worldwide shipments, while the PC market saw a minimal growth rate of 2.7%. The reason for the Mac’s continued spike in growth? Asia.

The Games category is by far the most popular corner of the iOS App Store, and a new report has surfaced that says most people spend their money on virtual, in-app goods and upgrades in their favorite games.

In terms of Android and iOS users, the ‘freemium’ model seems to be the reigning king of mobile gaming. Users are starting to prefer free games that offer in-app upgrades and purchases to unlock new content.

Amazon has released a new iPhone app for college-bound students that offers online price comparisons for textbooks. As the school year beings, finding a good deal on class textbooks can be tricky.

The new Amazon Student app lets users scan the barcode of a textbook and determine its trade-in value. Users can also buy new and used textbooks from Amazon.com and have them shipped from within the app.
