The iPhone is the Best-Selling Smartphone in the US [Report]

iPhone 4 White and Black Side by Side

In case you needed any more confirmation: yes, the iPhone is doing very well in the US. Research firm NPD has published its Mobile Phone Track report for Q2 of 2011, and the iPhone 4 and 3GS tank as the top two best-selling smartphones.

Even during the current economy, consumers are still opting for the Apple tax. What’s even more interesting is that the iPhone 3GS is the second best-selling smartphone, and the 3GS has been on the market for over two years.

Top 5 Selling Smartphones in Q2 of 2011:

  1. Apple iPhone 4
  2. Apple iPhone 3GS
  3. HTC EVO 4G
  4. HTC Inspire 4G
  5. Samsung INTENSITYII

Despite the 14 month-old iPhone 4 and 26 month-old 3GS claiming the top selling spots, NPD does note that Android took the majority of sales with 52% of new adopters in Q2 — and that’s due to the fact that the OS is preinstalled on such a wide variety of hardware from different manufacturers.

What’s most telling about this report is that Apple has managed to maintain traction without introducing a new iPhone in the Summer. Besides the announcement of the white iPhone 4 and Verizon support, the iPhone 4 has been all there is for the past 14 months.

Apple has been aggressively marketing the iPhone 3GS with promotions and price cuts, but that 26 month-old device is expected to lose software support soon.

The iPhone 5 is expected to launch this Fall in the month of September or October, depending on who you ask.
