In a surprise move, Skype has released a WiFi app that allows users to access over one million hotspots with Skype’s pay per minute credits. The app is clearly geared towards international travelers, and Skype is offering its new WiFI app for free in the App Store.
“With the new Skype WiFi app, you can go online on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch (running iOS 4.1 or above with multitasking) at over 1 million WiFi hotspots around the world, including hotels, airports, train stations, convention centres, bars and restaurants. And with Skype Credit you only pay for the minutes you use. So, there’s no need to buy an hour or day WiFi voucher if you’re only looking to check your email or make a quick Skype call.”
You can connect to multiple types of hotspots, and the app is pretty straightforward to use. For travelers that are wary of their data rates, this app is a no-brainer.
WiFi access prices through Skype’s supported hotspots start from US$ 0.06/4p/€0,05. You will only be charged for the minutes that you use while connected.
Skype is offering free WiFi access and 60 minutes of free talk time with its new app through August 21st. Skype WiFi is available for the iPhone and iPad.
