Is the non-Retina MacBook Pro on its way out? Photo: Apple

Apple wants to open a flagship Apple Store in India, similar to its Fifth Avenue outlet. Photo: Apple
Apple’s plans for a string of retail stores in India hit a hurdle last month when the country’s finance minister ruled that Apple must conform to local sourcing laws in order to be granted a permit for the country. Requiring that Apple procure 30 percent of its goods locally, this seemed like it put a decisive halt to plans for Apple Stores in India.
Fortunately, it seems that cooler heads have prevailed — as part of a much larger rethink that goes way beyond Apple.
Apple may be running into roadblocks during its expansion in China, but that’s not stopping the company from pushing forward with its retail plans — with Macau, a glitzy city often referred to as the “Las Vegas of China,” set to receive its first Apple Store later this month.
According to Apple, the store will open at 10am local time on June 25, based at the upmarket Galaxy Macau resort shopping mall. Its opening will mark the 41st dedicated Apple Store to open in China.
After opening up a fancy new retail store in Union Square, Apple no longer needs its original San Francisco store on 1 Stockton Street — but it won’t be empty for long. New plans reveal there is demand for the space from one of Apple’s partners.

Apple may want to rethink its permanent blue uniform strategy after thieves pillaged an Apple Store in New York in broad daylight last week.
Two teenage thieves reportedly pulled off an iPhone heist without employees ever noticing because they were dressed similar to Apple’s staff, says the police.
India is a project for the long haul it seems! Photo: Ste Smith/Cult of Mac
With Apple running into problems in China, it’s been upping its focus on India as another relatively untapped market where Cupertino hopes to expand its market share. But can India, which has a population of 1.25 billion people, really serve as a substitute for China, with its comparative 1.36 billion people?
Not according to a group of Mizuho Securities analysts, who argue that regulatory politics, competition, low wages and lack of carrier support are all obstacles in India which means it will struggle to offset a slowdown in Apple’s China business.
Apple's original flagship store in San Francisco is being quickly decommissioned. Photo: Lyle Kahney/Cult of Mac
SAN FRANCISCO — The iconic glass staircase is gone. The interior is being gutted. The Apple logos have been covered up.
Rest in peace, Apple’s original flagship store in San Francisco, which opened to great fanfare just a dozen years ago. Apple recently opened a crazily detailed store just two blocks away on Union Square, and the old one is being rapidly dismantled.
Cult of Maccub reporter Lyle Kahney rode his bike downtown to snap a few photos of the old San Francisco Apple Store before it’s completely gone.
Indian Apple Stores may finally be on the way. Photo: Ste Smith/Cult of Mac
Apple’s plans to open own-brand Apple Stores in India may finally be gaining momentum, with a new report claiming that the Indian government is likely to give the company a two or three year exemption to local sourcing laws in order to establish its retail outlets in the country.
SAN FRANCISCO — Look carefully at the cracks in the sidewalk around Apple’s new flagship store in San Francisco. They all line up with architectural elements of the store.
Some are continuous with the metal panels on the exterior walls. Some line up with the windows, and the huge glass panels that make up the 42-foot high front door. Some of the cracks are continuous with the stone floor tiles inside the store.
In turn, the joints in the floor line up with panels on the wall, which line up with the lighting panels on the ceiling.
In fact, most of the lines in the store — the edges of the glass balconies, cutouts in the middle of the tables, the edges of shelves and drawers — all line up with other elements of the store.
Some of these lines run continously from the sidewalk in front of the store all the way through to the tree-lined plaza in the back. It’s a bit crazy, when you examine it, and very, very difficult to pull off.
Good luck getting an AirPort Extreme today. Photo: Apple
Apple Stores in the U.S. are no longer selling the AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule. It’s thought both devices were pulled as the result of a new FCC ruling that comes into effect soon — but it’s likely they will return at some point.

It may not have been the first Apple Store, but Apple’s Fifth Avenue New York retail outlet (a.k.a. the big glass cube) is almost certainly the most famous Apple Store in the world — and it may be about to get even bigger and more impressive.
According to a new report, while Apple is overhauling its iconic New York store it plans to occupy the nearby 61,000 square foot FAO Schwarz space in the GM Building, and may even consider keeping this space permanently in addition to its existing site.
