Apple’s OLED iPad mini is closing in on release. A fresh report says the redesigned tablet would reach store shelves by the end of October.
Expect a sharper, brighter screen as well as a faster chip built for Apple Intelligence. Apple is also said to be reworking the tablet’s shell for better water resistance.

iPad mini: A tablet made for travelers
The iPad mini is the smallest tablet in Apple’s lineup, designed to deliver the full iPad experience in a much more portable package. The current model has an 8.3-inch standard LCD screen, and measures just 7.7 by 5.3 inches.
Given its dimensions, the tablet targets people who value portability over screen size. It’s small enough to slip into a small bag and light enough to comfortably hold in one hand, making it particularly appealing for travelers, commuters, readers and students. Pilots and other professionals who need a capable computer they can carry around easily have also embraced the compact format.
And the improvements supposedly on Apple’s agenda could make it even more interesting.

It’s been an open secret for at least a year that Apple was designing an iPad mini with an OLED display. It apparently is almost ready to go.
An OLED screen will give the iPad mini a significant visual upgrade over the current LCD display. Because each individual OLED pixel produces its own light, the tablet will deliver deeper blacks, higher contrast and more vibrant colors, while also providing better HDR performance.
For a small tablet often used for reading, watching movies and viewing photos, the richer visuals could make a noticeable difference.
Also, OLED panels can be thinner than LCD screens because they don’t require a separate backlight, potentially helping Apple make the iPad mini even slimmer.
Another screen movement is still up in the air. It’s unknown if Apple will pair the OLED panel with a 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate, or if it will stick to the same 60Hz panel.
It’s worth noting that the iPad mini would be just the latest Apple device to go OLED. This type of screen is already used in iPhone, Apple Watch and iPad Pro. And it’s supposedly coming soon to the first touchscreen-enabled MacBook Pro as well as iPad Air.
A19 Pro chip should power Apple Intelligence
Reports point to Apple going with the A19 Pro chip for the 2026 iPad mini. That’s the same chip already powering the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone Air. The current iPad mini runs on the A17 Pro, which is now two generations behind.
Some rumors suggest that Apple could instead skip ahead to the A20 Pro — the chip going into the iPhone 18 Pro models — but that seems unlikely. Historically, the iPad mini lags behind Apple’s newest chip upgrades. And the older processor would comfortably handle Apple Intelligence features like Siri AI built into the upcoming iPadOS 27.
Redesigned casing to bring better water resistance
Beyond the OLED screen and faster processor, Apple is also reportedly working on a redesigned casing for its mini tablet, with the goal of bringing water resistance closer to what the iPhone has to offer. This would be really useful for anyone who reaches for their iPad mini near a pool or in the kitchen.
To do that, Apple is said to use a vibration-based speaker system. This way, it could skip traditional speaker holes entirely. Instead of open grills, the sound would come from vibrating surfaces. Fewer holes mean fewer places for dust and water to get in.
New release date leak points to October
The last new model, the iPad mini (A17 Pro), launched in fall 2024. But a new one is coming, with a better screen. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said in the latest Power On newsletter that the OLED iPad mini “should go on sale by the end of October.”
The timing suggests Apple won’t reveal its new pocket-friendly tablet at the September 9 “Surprise and shine” event. A separate announcement — likely through a press release — looks more probable for October.
If true, it won’t be the first time Apple has skipped a dedicated event for the iPad mini. The current model — iPad mini 7 — debuted the same way.
OLED iPad mini price could climb higher
Apple bumped the iPad mini’s starting price to $599 earlier this year. Whether the OLED iPad mini holds that price or costs more remains to be seen.
That said, OLED panels typically cost more to produce than their LCD counterparts, so there’s a chance the upcoming tablet would cost even more.
Even so, for those due for an upgrade, the OLED iPad mini looks worth the wait. Apple’s smallest tablet hasn’t seen a redesign like this in a long time.
