Prime Target is an incoming Apple TV+ thriller that combines conspiracy theories with math theorems. Seriously. It’s about a mathematician whose research is being suppressed as part of a mysterious conspiracy.

The upcoming series will star Leo Woodall and Quintessa Swindell.

Prime numbers are the target in Prime Target on Apple TV+

Thrillers are a mainstay of Apple TV+. The streaming service offers some good ones, from Idris Elba’s Hijack to the mega-hit Severance. And Apple just made a series order for what it calls a “conspiracy thriller.”

The full description says:

Prime Target features a brilliant young math postgraduate, Edward Brooks (played by Woodall), on the verge of a major breakthrough. If he succeeds in finding a pattern in prime numbers, he will hold the key to every computer in the world. Soon he begins to realize an unseen enemy is trying to destroy his idea before it’s even born, which throws him into the orbit of Taylah Sanders, a female NSA agent (played by Swindell) who’s been tasked with watching and reporting on the mathematician’s behavior. Together they start to unravel the troubling conspiracy Edward is at the heart of.”

For those not geeky enough, encryption algorithms are based on very large prime numbers. They can be used to keep data safe because there’s no pattern to them — primes appear semi-randomly, even in numbers with hundreds of digits.  If the character in the Apple TV+ series found a pattern in prime numbers, it could be used to decrypt virtually everything kept secured on the internet.

The stars of Prime Target are young but have already turned in solid performances. SAG Award winner Woodall is best known for roles in The White Lotus and One Day, while Swindell appeared in Black Adam and In Treatment.

The cast also includes Oscar nominee Stephen Rea (The Crying Game, V for Vendetta), BAFTA Award nominee David Morrissey (Sherwood, The Walking Dead), Emmy winner Martha Plimpton (The Regime), Emmy winner Sidse Babett Knudsen (Borgen, Westworld), SAG Award nominee Jason Flemyng (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) and BAFTA Award nominee Harry Lloyd (Game of Thrones).

Award-winning writer Steve Thompson (Sherlock, Vienna Blood, Doctor Who) created the series.

Coming to Apple TV+ … sometime

As Apple TV+ has only just now committed to Prime Target, it’ll be a while before the eight-episode one-hour series has its global premiere.

In the meantime, consider the sci-fi thriller Constellation instead. It launches February 21 on Apple’s streaming service, and will also be jam-packed with conspiracies.
