A photo that surfaced on the Chinese microblogging website Weibo shows the purported aluminum molds of the iPhone 14 series.
The molds give a clear look at how the different iPhone 14 models will stack up in size and how massive the camera hump will be this time around.
Four iPhone 14 models, two different screen sizes
First spotted by MacRumors, the molds show four different models with two different screen sizes: iPhone 14 and 14 Pro with 6.1-inch displays and iPhone 14 Pro Max and a non-Pro Max model with 6.7-inch screens. The fourth model is rumored to be the newest addition to the lineup this year. It is expected to replace the 5.4-inch iPhone 13 mini. This should not be surprising since the mini iPhone has failed to click with customers.
The molds are possibly based on leaked CAD renders of the iPhone 14 series. Case makers and other accessory manufacturers usually make them for their own testing and designing purposes. Nonetheless, they give us a glimpse of what to expect from the upcoming iPhones in the design department.
iPhone 14 will have a massive camera bump
If accurate, the molds suggest the rear design of the iPhone 14 won’t be too different from the iPhone 13. The only notable difference will be the change in camera hump — it will be even more prominent than in the iPhone 13 Pro lineup. Previous leaks suggest the camera hump on the iPhone 14 Pro Max will be 0.48 inches thick vs. 0.30 inches on the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
Apple is rumored to use a larger 48-megapixel sensor on the iPhone 14 — up from 12MP on the iPhone 13 series. The bigger camera bulge will allow the Cupertino company to make space for the new sensor without increasing the overall thickness of the phones. This could allow the upcoming iPhones to record 8K videos and take more detailed photos, so the trade-off could be well worth it.
The front design is not visible, but the iPhone 14 Pro models will reportedly ditch the notch in favor of a hole-and-pill screen cutout this year.
