A previous leak had already indicated that the iPhone 14 Pro Max will have a sizable hump, but new specs show the entire device is going to be… well, huge. But it’s all supposedly part of a significant improvement in camera specs.
These leaked specs also reveal other iPhone 14 Pro Max details, like the size and positioning of the new “hole and pill” design allegedly replacing the notch.
iPhone 14 Pro camera hump might be quite large
Camera humps have become the norm for high-end phones. There just isn’t room for cutting-edge cameras in slim handset designs. The resulting bulges are so common they are generally accepted.
But the iPhone 14 Pro could take it to a new level. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo warned recently of a “more prominent rear-camera bump” on the upcoming device.
Monday, leaked CAD drawings and specs posted on Twitter from a tipster calling themselves ShrimpApplePro claim that the 14 Pro Max will be 0.48 inches (12.16mm) thick. Compare that to the 0.30 inches (7.65mm) of the iPhone 13 Pro Max and users of the upcoming handset are going to need to get used to a sizable difference.
The hump itself will be 0.16 inches (4.18mm), which means the rest of the phone will be 0.31 inches (7.98mm). Apparently, the non-hump portion of the iPhone 14 Pro Max will be almost as thick as the 13 Pro Max’s camera hump.
The size increase is allegedly the result of a 48-megapixel camera, up from the current 12MP. The additional width in the rest of the handset could make room for a larger battery.
About that ‘hole and pill’ screen cutout
The leaked CAD drawings cover more than just the camera. Those interested in the hole-and-pill screen cutout that’s been in so many previous reports might like to know how large each will be.
The hole-punch camera will supposedly have a diameter of 0.22 inches (5.59mm). The two sides of the pill-shaped opening will have the same diameter and the opening will be 0.28 inches (7.15mm) wide. They will allegedly sit 0.09 inches (2.29mm) from the top of the display.
Both the iPhone 14 Pro models will reportedly ditch the notch in favor of the new design. But two non-Pro models also supposedly on the docket for autumn will keep the same notch as the iPhone 13.
